How Much Does A 70 Foot Viking Cost?

Like all Viking sportfish, the 70 Convertible was built to run fast, fish hard, and deliver winning results in competitive tournaments. Viking is known for outdoing itself and, at the time, the 70C was no exception. Today, the 70 Convertible has been retired and replaced with the 72 Convertible , but pre-owned vessels can still be found on the brokerage market. After the incredible yacht sales boom over the last few years, much of the available used Viking inventory has been depleted, but patient buyers that work with a professional Viking broker can find often find one just before it hits the market.

When it first came out, the Viking 70 Convertible had a base price of $3.7 million, but could easily reach over $5 million once options and equipment were added on. According to the yachting industry MLS database, most 70-foot Vikings that were built in 2013 through 2015, sold between $3.5 million and $4.8 million. With limited inventory available today, the 70 Convertibles that are available for sale have an asking price over $4.5 million, unless you get a 2011 or older which then drops it below the $4 million threshold.

Much has been said about the 70 Convertible's power and it has been clocked at excellent speeds. To put it bluntly, the 70C is fast! So just how fast does a 70 foot Viking go? "The Viking 70 has top speeds over 43 knots," continued Rich. "The optional twin MTU 2600HP diesel engines provide a substantial boost in speed over the standard MAN 1550HP's. That upgrade alone is nearly a million dollars added to the price of the boat."

The complex construction of the hull of the Viking 70 is a major contributor to its speed, and its price tag. The core is a high quality end-grain balsa wood that is resin infused, making the boat lighter, faster, and stronger. Foam-cored stringers that have been encapsulated in fiberglass add the strength and backbone to the hull. Combined with almost 100 inches of forward freeboard and a strongly raked stem, and this sportfishing boat will handle oncoming seas like a champ.

According to an official test by the group at Power and Motor Yacht Magazine, the 70C is burning 96 gallons per hour when running at a 25.8 knot cruising speed and 1,500 rpm's.

Owners of the Viking 70 will also appreciate the spacious, roomy cabins in the four-stateroom, four-head layout. The master suite (seen below) is found midship with an en suite bathroom. There is a king-sized, walk-around berth in the venter along with a love seat in the corner. As with all Vikings, the interior woodwork is phenomenal and creates a wonderful ambiance. The VIP suite is found forward in the layout and offers nearly as much space and storage as the master cabin. Two additional cabins have bunk beds and share a bathroom, while the fourth head is found in the main salon.

The expansive flybridge, accessed from either the molded stairwell on the aft deck or through the salon staircase, offers ample seating, a wet bar with sink, electric grill, and built-in refrigerator. The centerline helm provides superb visibility for the operator and there is a raised sunpad aft with storage below. The davit spans both the flybridge and swim platform to accommodate carrying both a tender and personal watercraft. The teak aft deck is ideal for relaxing, while port and starboard steps flanking the cockpit area lead to the integrated bathing platform for easy boarding and tender access. The salon makes excellent use of the wide beam and allows plentiful seating for family and guests. A large U-shaped settee is to starboard with the well-equipped entertainment center and two barrel chairs opposite. A clever bar area separates the salon from the dining area and features an icemaker, refrigerator, and abundant bottle and glass storage. The galley is equipped for preparing magnificent gourmet meals or a late night snack while star gazing on the upper deck. The main helm offers twin adjustable seating and a sliding door to the starboard side deck, while the adjacent raised dinette forward offers panoramic views and enjoys plenty of natural lighting thanks to the large forward windshield and side windows. The prominent feature on the lower deck is the full beam master suite with its walk through dressing area, built-in entertainment system, and spacious en suite head. The lower lobby area is open to the upper windscreen to bathe in natural light and houses a convenient laundry center and storage area. Elegance continues in the forward VIP stateroom with its en suite dressing table and private head with stall shower. Viking 70 Sportfish Yacht Highlight [Boat Review + Video]

Hi, my name is Mike Burke with Denison Yachting. I’m here today to take you through a 2015 70-foot Viking, called Pipe Dreamer . Out of all the new boats that I’ve built, this current owner has built four of them, making this a very special boat. This is by far the nicest 70 Viking currently on the market. Now, I’m going to hand it off to Ryan and I’m going to let him walk you through and show you why Pipe Dreamer is an amazing 70 Viking.

This morning at sunrise, Captain Robby and I left the dock in a narrow window between storm clouds. We ran south from the Jupiter Inlet in order to put this amazing Viking through the paces. With most Sportfish yachts, you can tell if the client building her was more enthusiastic about fishing or cruising. The difference between these two mindsets, onboard pipe dreams is almost impossible to parse.

Everything about the profile of this 70 Viking is the result of innovations spanning decades. She features modern materials like the carbon fiber making up her deckhouse with finishing touches provided by more traditional materials. A big part of her performance package was the fact that it allowed Viking to remove 20,000 pounds of weight from the boat.

Her massive teak appointed cockpit is loaded with options that make the fishing part of this experience easy and exciting. Whether waging war from her fighting chair or spectating from the molded in mezzanine, no one has to miss out on the fun that this boat provides.

Stepping inside transports you to a completely different experience, one that’s quiet and luxurious. It wasn’t just the exterior of the yacht that was spared no expense but also the areas were you and your guests find themselves when the fish stop biting.

A 4-stateroom 5-head layout means that Pipe Dreamer can comfortably sleep 8-guests. When you step into one of these cabins, especially the ones we find forward, you’re sure to find a lot of storage and headroom. All of the headroom found below deck indicates that her bow is domineering with over 8-feet of freeboard that makes easy work of temperamental seas.

This towering freeboard bends towards the waterline as it traces back to the cockpit. Back here, the freeboard measures 3-feet offering optimal access to the water with the safety of a wide teak coming. In all this space takes up 208 square feet of this yacht’s impressive floor plan. This leaves more than enough room for fishermen and spectators to share this area as you pull fish on board through a portside tuna door.

When you’re ready to reload you have immediate access to your live bait via an aquarium live well in the transom or you can quickly grab frozen bait off a bait tray in the mezzanine. The sole of both the mezzanine and the lower portion of the cockpit is finished in durable and well-maintained teak that disguises an impressive amount of storage.

First found underfoot is a Seakeeper M26 gyroscopic stabilizer. This wide access makes it easy to service both the gyro and the steering system. The two other large hatches down here are fish boxes of which the portside is filled directly with ice. These fish boxes are huge yet they don’t obstruct her centerline fighting chair in any way.

The forward section of the cockpit is an observation mezzanine that provides this 70 Viking with a broad range of capacity. First, to port, we see a seating area with tackle storage below. You can remove the pad to reveal a top-mounted grill above the tackle center. A bench seat is found on the starboard side of the mezzanine that makes this Sportfish drastically more enviable.

This seating area covered by a molded hardtop may end up being the most views seating on board next to the captain’s helm seat. Outboard to starboard is an auxiliary KEP monitor that’s tied into the GPS and navigation systems. Also found in this area is a ton of storage for bait that’s refrigerated.

Looking centreline we locate the engine room access hatch found in the mezzanine steps. Pipe Dreamer has a fantastic MTU engine package featuring twin 16V 2000 M94s. Aft of the engines is a Cummins Onan gen set with twenty-seven-and-a-half kilowatt generators. In addition to her gen set, the engine room is also equipped with a 1,400 gallon per day water maker and a spot zero reverse osmosis system.

Each one of our MTU engines puts out 2600 horsepower offering her owner a platform with a go anywhere mentality. Sweetening the deal is the fact that these engines are covered under MTU extended warranties that last until March 3rd, 2021, or 3,300 hours, whichever comes first. With throttles pegged this 70 Viking reports reaching top speeds of 42 knots and cruises comfortably between 32 and 34 knots.

Stepping inside through an electric door we arrived at the part of the yacht that your wife is sure to sign off on. Taking up most of the yachts 19-foot-7-inch beam, it’s Pipe Dreamer salon that’s loaded with luxurious options and top-of-the-line finishes. An open area to relax is found aft right by the entrance. An L-shaped sofa wraps around a protected bird’s-eye maple coffee table. Below the sofa cushions is an expansive tackle storage area.

Forward to starboard, we see a U-shaped dinette. A great feature of this 70 is the day head that’s found aft on the port side. Here, you can kick off your wet shoes and wash up before taking a seat at the bar. Forward of the day head, inside the upper cabinet, are the yacht’s AC and DC ship service panels with an Octoplex monitor above. Directly below the service panels is a sub-zero clear icemaker to complement the galley. And then parallel with the portside window is a 46-inch Samsung TV that hides away electrically.

Next, we come to the galley by way of a centerline island appointed with a golden beach stone countertop. This prep area also serves as your go to option for meals in between fish. Found in the island are two drawer style sub-zero freezers and four sub-zero refrigerators. Amtico flooring is the only thing that separates the two galley countertops.

The forward portion of the galley serves not only as a storage area but also contains a 4-burner Kenyan cooktop, conventional microwave, convection oven, and a stainless sink. Forward of the galley is what is commonly referred to as the doghouse. This is a glorified storage space that’s air-conditioned and crucial for long excursions.

Now, let’s leave the main deck and head down this set of stairs and check out the guest accommodations, the first of which is on the port side at the foot of these stairs. This cabin is considered the crew cabin because of her bunk layout and the fact that there’s direct access to the engine room found on the aft bulkhead. Like all of the guest cabins on board, this cabin is equipped with an ensuite head and shower. Leaving the crew cabin let’s continue forward in the guest companion way and make our way into the 70 Viking’s midship master stateroom.

The layout of the owner’s suite is centered around a walk-around berth. The storage here is mirrored with a banquette of drawers and hanging lockers to each side of the bed. With an open feel, this plush master dispels the idea that a Sportfish can’t be charming. On the forward bulkhead, there’s a 32-inch Samsung TV in addition to the ensuite entrance. Immediately outside of the master’s entrance is the yacht’s laundry center. Continuing forward and looking to port we arrive at the third stateroom which features bunks and an ensuite aft. And then finally we arrive at her final stateroom – the bow VIP.

Storage can be found on both sides of her island berth. Looking aft to the port is the cabin’s TV and a starboard is the entrance into the ensuite. Directly above this cabin is pipe dreamer’s stretching foredeck. Something that sets this area apart is the teak rail running around the perimeter of the bow. It boldly expresses what we know to be true about the yacht’s overall style. While finishes like this hint at the traditional, it’s the advances in this Viking’s engineering that really take the spotlight. Take, for example, the black metallic mask that wraps its way around the front of the deckhouse. In addition to being an aggressive aesthetic upgrade, it’s been painted onto an innovative carbon fiber deck house.

Forward on the bow is the windlass setup that features a Lewmar V4 windlass just forward of deep anchor lockers. A deleted pulpit buttons this area up neatly free of clutter. Wrapping up on the bow, let’s take a look at the flybridge which we’ll access from a teak finished ladder in the cockpit. Once we step up onto the flybridge, we see three Release Marine Trillian series helm chairs that face an island helm. Most visible is a teak Release helm pod with single lever controls on each side that have been integrated with bow thruster controls.

Above the wheel, we see three KEP multifunctional displays that are at the moment set up to display from left to right- a depth finder, chart plotter, and radar data when off the dock. Directly below these monitors is a Fusion stereo control, a pair of engine monitors that flank a Richie compass. The rest of the electronics are hidden away in weather-proof compartments. Below the portside hatch is an Octaplex control panel and a FLIR night-vision control.

In the starboard compartment, our engine stop-start controls, and a secondary bow and stern thruster control. Found overhead our four outrigger reels with additional navigation instruments just forward. These controls are comprised of an 8-inch Garmin GPS map, a pair of icon VHF radios, and an RD33 data display.

Flanking the helm and leading us forward is comfortable ultra-leather seating for your mate deckhand and your guests. In the forward section of this air-conditioned enclosure is a sink on the port side and there’s also a large bridge freezer box forward of the bench seat.

Also note this cutaway in the fiberglass that offers the captain a clear view of the bow as it tears through the water. 9-feet above the flybridge hardtop is Pipe Dreamer’s 15-step tuna tower. Found at this upper helm are all of the tools that you need to run this boat while the rest of the team follows your lead as you quarterback from beneath a matte black hardtop.

For control, the centerline is a stainless steel wheel and then there’s a Garmin multifunction display found on the port side. On the starboard side of the wheel our engine throttles, a VHF radio, and a Furuno no data display as well as a bow thruster or joystick.

Viking 70 Convertible – Boat Review

Just when you think you’ve seen the best a company can muster, it comes out with something light-years ahead. Such is the case with the Viking 70.

**Performance **I tested the 70 out of Cape May, New Jersey, in calm, two- to three-foot ocean swells. The boat carried about 60 percent fluid levels compared to the original factory test (performance report on factory website), which ran the boat completely full. No sane owner ever fills all the tanks completely unless heading on a passage to somewhere very far away.

Idling out at 6.6 knots with one engine in gear provided a very clean wake. I mention this because this is the speed Viking’s factory captain, Ryan Higgins, usually trolls. You can check the performance figures later, but we topped out at just more than 44 knots and cruised most comfortably at about 30.

Viking uses Veem Interceptor props almost exclusively. Ultimately, this boat will end up with six-blade wheels – five blades might be a tad faster, but six blades run smoother.

Three Lenco trim tabs (two outboard and one on centerline) afford a wide range of trim, and you’ll always know where your tabs are positioned thanks to an LCD screen displaying both trim-tab angle as well as an inclinometer. Also, as soon as you shift into neutral, the tabs automatically retract.

Nobody has mastered steering like Viking. The Viking Independent Programmable Electro-Hydraulic Rudder (VIPER) system makes this boat incredibly maneuverable at all speeds, and it improves fuel efficiency at the same time. The VIPER control panel even has a button titled “OK” that automatically centers your rudders.

Running surface improvements include flattening the transom deadrise angle for greater fuel economy and lateral stability while increasing the deadrise forward and at the entry for better head-sea performance. Add the tall freeboard forward, and you get a very dry head-sea boat.

Backing down, I managed just more than 7 knots in total control, while Capt. Higgins says he has hit 11 knots in reverse when fighting fish. The increased roundness in the transom helps the boat move backward quickly. And unless you start backing up-sea and begin taking water over the covering boards, you probably won’t see a drop come up through the scuppers or around the tuna door. With the speed and fuel capacity offered by this boat, suddenly you can consider running out to the canyons – 70 miles out and then back – a day trip.

**Cockpit **Since you board a convertible from the cockpit, it’s the first place you notice the substantial design differences in this 70. To sum up: Lines that were straight are now round. I can count the number of straight lines in or on this boat on one hand. The windows curve across both the tops and bottoms. Same goes for the tackle center and the arms of the mezzanine settee, the mezzanine steps, the transom, the facing under the mezzanine seats, you name it.

Virtually all the under-seat compartments on the mezzanine contain freezers and refrigerators – some dedicated for baits (rigged and unrigged) and others for food, drinks, etc. Under-gunwale storage lockers hide gaffs, mops, brush heads, chamoises, etc. as well as oil-change quick connects so you don’t have to carry buckets of oil between the dock and the engine room.

Design your fish-box layout however you wish, but they all lift out of the deck (with extra-long drain hoses) and afford incredible under-deck access.

**Engine Room **Open the hatch, and the fire pull sits close at hand just inside the door. Another trigger mechanism resides on the flybridge. Against the aft bulkhead sit the super-quiet Cummins Onan 27½ kW generators. Under the raised floorboards on centerline, a central seawater system running off a pair of 2 hp pool pumps supplies all raw-water needs except for engine cooling, which is channeled through a single manifold.

The compartment provides almost standing headroom for my 6-foot, 3-inch frame. I found no problem working all the way around both power plants. Viking builds in a level, fiberglass floor outboard of the engines, so you needn’t stand on the angled deadrise of the hull.

Transfer pump solenoids at the front of the compartment connect to the Octoplex electrical distribution system, allowing you to transfer fuel between tanks easily from the flybridge or any other Octoplex display location. Some people have qualms about this system, thinking that it may not be as robust as standard mechanical breakers. Octoplex is, in fact, a mechanical system of sorts. When you activate a solenoid via the LCD display touch screen, the signal ultimately triggers a servo that presses a mechanical breaker. And it saves a ton of wiring weight at the same time.

**Flybridge **Both entering and exiting the tower (by Palm Beach Towers) feels very secure while under way. And here’s another first: The tower sports radius curves in all the piping. It’s a real nice-looking tower! Murray Brothers’ new series of helm chairs also continues the rounding theme of this Viking.

I really prefer this boat’s center-console helm concept to the standard, broad helm module. The electronics inventory includes three 15-inch KEP monitors. But you almost never have to lift the big, clear door that houses them since controls for the navigation suite reside in boxes on either side of the helm steering pod.

The helmsman enjoys excellent vision fore and aft of the helm thanks to the scallop in the brow on centerline. I appreciated the toe kicks under all the helm and seating modules, and as you move around the bridge, you’ll find that you have more than enough space to pass behind and alongside all the helm pedestal seats.

Viking moved the deep freeze to the brow instead of the helm-module front. It offers much more freezer volume this way and keeps the passengers forward of the helm farther aft so they don’t block the helmsman’s line of sight.

**Interior **You enter the salon via the Stanley electric door and are instantly greeted by rich fabrics, glossy joinerwork and Amtico vinyl flooring (the new industry standard), which truly looks like real wood. However, if you chip this miraculous new flooring, simply peel up the offending piece and replace it.

The rounding philosophy carries through the interior as well in the cabinetry, counters, the island, companionway and elsewhere. Of course, the L-shaped settee boasts Viking’s signature hinged seatback: The back attaches to the wall, so lift the entire seat bottom and back as one L-shaped piece to reveal the storage beneath. Viking makes terrific use of virtually every square inch of dead space.

Another sign of the times: The only halogen lights aboard are found in the wall sconces in the master stateroom; everything else – including the cockpit floodlights – is LED.

Solid granite counters aren’t as prone to cracking from various flexing stresses over time as shaved granite installations. Of course, no stone comes with a guarantee. Another feature I really appreciate is that Viking never skimps on the size of the bunks. Especially in the single-berth cabins, the bunks are full-size twins.

Regarding the layout, Viking somehow successfully fit the entire Viking 74 interior inside this 70-footer.

**Design and Construction **

Viking continues its lighter yet stronger quest by sandwiching Baltek end-grain balsa coring between layers of multi-directional fiberglass. All painted surfaces get coated with Awlgrip except for the metallic-black mask across the front of the brow, which is Alexseal. The Baltek in the bottom absorbs impact better than solid fiberglass, and vacuum-bagging it assures optimum glass-to-resin ratios with zero voids. Rest assured, however, that every place there’s a thru-hull or penetration of the hull, you’ll notice that it passes through a core-free, solid-glass area.

It’s interesting to compare the 74 to this 70. The latter sports more rounding everywhere, a considerably higher bow freeboard and a more dramatic taper to the cabin sides. From both a safety and styling perspective, I also like the new flush foredeck.

I have to agree with Capt. Higgins: “I know I seem to say this every time I get a new boat, but this 70 really is my favorite one we’ve ever built!”
