Luxury motor yacht PLAN b was built in 1973 by the Australian Navy. She was refitted in 2004, 2011 and then 2014 and underwent an extensive transformation from a military explorer vessel into a superb luxury superyacht. At 50m LOA and with a beam of 10m, this stunning yacht provides abundant exterior and interior living spaces. Her interior design is a work of Tracey Barnier-Willis Design and features decor inspired by travelling around the world.

The main salon of motor yacht Plan B is spacious and inviting. Some opulent decor elements, such as some exotic fur, skins, Louis Vuitton travel collection lavish trunks and styling furnishing, create a truly opulent ambiance, Motor yacht Plan B has a "Great room" perfect for social gathering, unwinding and entertainment. There are also a spacious lounge, beautiful dining area and study.

Located on the main deck, the owner's master suite is almost a full-beam size and boasts large closets, desks and seating. Guest accommodation comprises of two grand and two smaller double cabins. Plan B accommodate 12 guests in total, assisted by 14 crew members.

PLAN B Specifications

Exterior spaces of the main deck are enormous and can carry a hundred guests on a special occasion held aboard Plan B. There is plenty of space for a romantic dinner for 2 or a vibrant celebration for 25. Durning the day the main deck will become the centre of sunbathing and entertainment, while at night it will transfer into a movie theatre or a night club.

The Jacuzzi deck boasts a fully equipped gym, a massive Jacuzzi and sun loungers. The Upper aft deck features a fabulous indoor/outdoor flow. The upper deck lounge has comfortable seating and a dining table. An alfresco dining option for 20 people is also available on the upper deck.

Yacht Accommodation

The accommodation offer comfortable sleeping for 10 people in five private staterooms - 1 Super King, 3 King, 1 King which converts to a to twin. The master cabin (super king) is located on the main deck. It has a spacious living area including a lounge, office, dressing room and ensuite bathroom with his and her shower units. The second king stateroom has an ensuite with a shower and bath unit. The three final staterooms also have private ensuites with only a shower. All cabins have CD Portable flat screen TV's and DVD's.

Nautical equipment and facilities include: Stabilizers, water maker, Water Capacity 5,284 gal, Fuel Capacity 35,667 gal, air conditioning, fresh deck water, swimming platform and ladder, full laundry facilities. COMMUNICATION equipment includes: SatCom, fax, copier, printer, computer and email. LEISURE EQUIPMENT includes: A Waverunner, snorkel gear, kayaks, canoe, fishing equipment including light fishing trolling & casting, 12 sets of scuba gear, compressor, water skis, windsurfer, sailing yacht, bikes, scooters and a gym room. There is a Dinghy 28ft Protector/ 300hp (diesel), Barge 26ft Landing barge/ 250 hp (diesel), Dinghy 20ft Kingfisher alloy rib/ 240 hp (diesel) with jet unit. ‘Plan B’ is a 163.94ft  /49.97m  motor yacht, custom built in 1973 by Australian Navy and last refitted in 2011. Previously named HMAS Flinders (Ran), she is a superb choice for the most memorable of charter vacations.

Plan B’s interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests in 5 rooms, including a master suite, 2 double cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 14 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience. This impressive yacht comes complete with a modern stabilization system to reduce roll motion even during rough seas, and the yacht also has ‘at anchor stabilizers’ to keep things smooth even at anchor/zero speed.

The 163-foot former Australian Navy vessel Plan B may not look like a traditional superyacht, but the converted explorer yacht has drawn the likes of Hollywood heartthrobs Matt Damon and Chris Hemsworth as charter guests — and is now bound for far-off destinations where even they might be able to escape the paparazzi.

Newly announced management company Ocean Independence says Plan B will charter this summer in Norway, beginning in June.

The owner also will consider inquiries for charter in the Baltic Sea, Iceland and Greenland. Those are destinations where traditionally styled yachts are rarely, if ever, offered.

Plan B accommodates 12 guests in five staterooms. Two of the staterooms can convert from twins to doubles, as needed by the charter party. Lowest weekly base rate: $195,000

50m converted naval ship Plan B sold

The 50-metre explorer yacht Plan B has been sold by Merle A. Wood of Merle Wood & Associates representing the buyer and Will Christie of Christie Yachts representing the seller. 

Plan B started life in the Southern Hemisphere, built as an Australian naval ship in 1973 and later transformed into a full-fledged explorer. Built in steel and Lloyd's classed, she has cruised extensively in her lifetime to the Arctic Circle, Patagonia, New Zealand, Galapagos Islands, Easter Islands and Myanmar.

She still retains a military-style profile with a gunmetal grey hull and superstructure and has benefited from significant upgrades under her current ownership between 2018 and 2023. 

The main deck aft serves as the primary gathering area for guests with a shaded dining table for ten, a sit-up bar and a configuration of sofas, coffee tables and chairs. At night, the space transforms into a cinema under the stars with a 150-inch screen and a DLP HD Projector.

A secondary exterior lounge can be found on the bridge deck above, this time offering an indoor-outdoor dining space with retractable floor-to-ceiling windows that can be closed for protection in inclement weather or opened to allow for a sea breeze to accompany diners. This winter garden is finished with intricate wooden detailing and animal print furnishings, also seen throughout the vessel.

Plan B's explorer credentials are evident, not only in her rugged appearance but her Airbus H145 helicopter found stowed on the sundeck. The reinforced helicopter deck has refuelling capabilities for longer passages, while a bulwark separates helicopter operations from a spa pool flanked by sun pads forward. 

Accommodation is for 12 guests across five cabins, including a master suite on the main deck with two walk-in wardrobes and his and hers bathrooms to port and starboard. The remaining four guest cabins are found on the lower deck with further provision for a crew of 16. In total, Plan B offers 746 GT across her five decks.

Up to three tenders can be stored on the foredeck, alongside a pair of Jet Skis, and are launched and recovered by a heavy-duty davit crane. On the lower deck is storage for a fourth tender, launched on the port side via a beam crane, and other toys, such as the slide that is secured to the helipad.

Twin Caterpillar diesel engines deliver a top speed of 12 knots and a maximum range of 6,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. All major machinery and systems have been upgraded including new generators and a full rebuild of the main engines completed in 2018/19. Four Quantum zero speed stabilisers keep her steady, added as part of a 2005 refit.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
