The Enticer a Trumpy Yacht
How does the other half lives on The Enticer a Trumpy Yacht. The following is a guest post by Mark Allen of South Jersey Marina.
Given the fact that Cape May city is famous for its plethora of classic and unique Bed and Breakfasts (B&B’s), the Enticer, tied up tight to South Jersey Marina’s “Face” dock seemed to be a perfect fit for this oldest of all seaside resorts. Dockmaster Tom told me that the Captain was having breakfast at the Saltwater Cafe, so I ducked in and introduced myself. It turns out that the Captain, Greg Newport, (yes, like Cape May’s Yankee twin) is a big fan of Schellengers Landing and South Jersey Marina here on the Other Side. He graciously invited me to come aboard and tour Enticer a little later in the day. Aaron, South Jersey’s new Tournament Director, said he would tag along with his camera.
With all mahogany uppers, Enticer is as distinctive a yacht as you’ll ever see and she turns heads wherever she travels. Once aboard, you would not be wrong if you described her a s a seagoing luxury B&B. Designed by the legendary John Trumpy, and built in 1935 by the Mathis Yacht Building Company at their Camden, New Jersey yard, Enticer is a remarkably fit and beautiful 80 year-old. With a flat double planked wood hull, she is a lean 85’ long with a 16’ beam and a draft of only 4’, a combination which enables her to access most port-o-calls. A brace of reliable and sturdy John Deere Turbo Diesels move her along at a steady 10-12 knots, rarely faster and rarely slower, according to Captain Newport.
Electrical power is delivered by a pair of generators, a Northern Lights 20kw generator paired with a Kohler 32kw unit. Her flared stern and flat bottom conspire to suggest roll issues but Enticer’s state-of-the-art Seakeeper M21000 Gyro stabilizer keeps her “even keel,” steady and solid in most sea states and her customers comfortable and happy. Reliable, steady and beautiful are the key describers of Enticer.
Even with the Seakeeper, Captain Newport picks his navigation routes carefully. “She’s still a lakes, bay and sound boat,” he explains. “We stick with the Intercoastal and avoid going offshore whenever possible. In fact, we only ran in here to get out of the weather and re-provision. Wednesday’s weather looks good, so that’s when we’ll make the offshore run to New York. Besides,” he adds, “I like coming here.”
Pointing over toward Yacht Avenue’s boathouse row, he continued, “Just look at this. It’s beautiful here; Cape May is a quaint town and everything we need or want is nearby. The marina has the fuel, plenty of side-to dockage, deep water and a great ships store.” Pointing across the street towards Lucky Bones, then sweeping his hand back towards the Lobster House, he added, “There are bars for the crew, nice restaurants for the owners, stores and shops, John the Barber nearby and even an urgent care just across the bridge. And everything is a short walk away. Cape May is a perfect port-o-call.”

An Historic Mathis-Trumpy Yacht Makes Her Daring Return
The 1920s Freedom is restored to her original splendor, recalling the lavish era of classic motor yachts.
She must have been irresistible. What wasn’t to adore along the 104 feet of this regal watercraft? To Jessie Woolworth Donahue, daughter of retail magnate F.W. Woolworth and then one of prewar America’s wealthiest women, the vessel was indeed perfect. A slender beam ideal for gliding the intracoastal waters surrounding her Palm Beach house. A plumb bow that rose straight up from the waterline like the aquiline forehead of an aristocrat. A divinely proportioned counter stern with an elliptical fantail that curved gently up and aft with the grace of a ballerina’s gesture. Bronze scrollwork that glowed in the sun. A low, sturdy stack nestled alongside one heaven-reaching, raked mast. Behind, the romance of sail. Ahead, the power and promise of engines.
And within, the ultimate expression of how one lived: a trio of expansive double staterooms (plus one single), three baths, lounging and dining saloons (with mahogany walls, beams, and deckhouse), and interiors decorated in grand style by famed retailer Wanamaker (the decor alone was advertised to have cost $30,000). Irresistible.
Wealth. Opulence. Assurance. And perhaps most symbolically, a signal of one’s freedom to roam from enclave to enclave, from season to season, in high luxury. Sold, then, was the 1926 Mathis-Trumpy Freedom to Donahue. She was, of course, a member of the Gilded Age class that commissioned or acquired yachts with the same alacrity they built mansions and seized the goldenmost layer of the American dream.
“In these days, newly minted millionaires had their list of things to acquire, to check the box to be a proper millionaire,” says Earl McMillen III, a Newport, Rhode Island–based yacht restorer and de facto historian of the period. “You’d have a house in Palm Beach, Newport, or Bar Harbor in the summer,” he continues, “a shooting plantation in South Carolina or Georgia, and on that list was a proper yacht. It was a lifestyle that everyone saw.”
This maritime striving, according to author Ross MacTaggart, spawned a century’s worth of high-profile boats. The wave began in 1830, he notes, with an Englishman who commissioned the first known motor yacht: the steam-driven Menai, complete with paddle wheels that made her look like a hybrid of a submarine and a Mississippi riverboat.
While the design may have seemed maladroit, the outcome was profound: “For the first time,” MacTaggart writes in his book Millionaires, Mansions, and Motor Yachts, “an individual could control his or her vessel’s schedule.” No waiting for tides, currents, winds. And while the late 1800s saw the addition of luxury rail travel, the promise was more confined than the private yacht: “A millionaire still had to accept the fact that trains went where they could, not where you wanted,” MacTaggart writes. “What was the point of being a millionaire if one could not do whatever one wanted, whenever and wherever? And comfortably?”
Yachting's Gilded Giants
As the 20th century opened, and as industrialists and other millionaires like Cornelius Vanderbilt, J.P. Morgan, their offspring, and rising nouveau riche joined the elite rosters, naval architects strove to create vessels that matched those aspirations. Private motor yachts diversified: some built for ocean-going explorations, others—like Freedom— for cruising protected waters along the Eastern seaboard, and others still for speedy commuting from one’s estate, say, on Long Island to the New York Yacht Club’s dock at 26th Street on the East River. The costs to build these crafts (in the millions of dollars at the time), not to mention maintain them—all the way down the ledger to stylish nautical dress for every crew member—were monumental.
.css-ddas4j{color:#0A0736;font-family:BodoniBold,BodoniBold-roboto,BodoniBold-local,Georgia,Serif;font-size:1.625rem;line-height:1.2;margin:0rem;text-transform:lowercase;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-ddas4j{font-size:2rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 48rem){.css-ddas4j{font-size:2.375rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-ddas4j{font-size:2.375rem;line-height:1.1;}}.css-ddas4j b,.css-ddas4j strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-ddas4j em,.css-ddas4j i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;} “If you have to ask how much a yacht costs, you can’t afford one.” -Attributed to J.P. Morgan
And in the 1920s, many agree the form reached its design apogee. Designers like Jonah Trumpy were working at the peak of their craft, creating silhouettes of grace and proportion that carved their way elegantly through water and spaces throughout that matched those of mansions and country homes on land. It was a bright era that was snuffed out nearly entirely by the combined economic effects of the imposition of income tax in 1914 and the Depression thereafter, not to mention the rise in the use of automobiles, the improvement of roads, and finally, the new promise of air travel. As happens to all empires, the glory days of the great private yacht were closing.
But for McMillen, there were survivors to be found, restored, and relaunched. “If they’re lost, they’re lost forever,” he says, recounting how Freedom, in fact, nearly suffered that fate. From the hands of Mrs. Donahue, the houseboat (Trumpy’s term for his class of luxury yachts, whose interiors were emulations of all the comforts of home) had been sold in 1939 to a real estate developer in Florida who renamed her Sunset to promote his own Sunset Islands development near Miami. A succession of Florida owners followed, but by 2001, the craft was languishing in a warehouse in Jacksonville and slated for demolition. McMillen learned of the boat’s grim, looming fate from MacTaggart and moved quickly. He bought her for one hundred dollars and undertook the near-Herculean process to move her up the coast to his facilities in the greater Newport area (one of the nation’s centers of boatbuilding and restoration) and to raise the funds—$7.5 million—to restore her. In May of 2009, rebuilt painstakingly plank by plank, the yacht returned to service, thanks to a creative fractional ownership syndicate assembled by McMillen, and took her original name back. In 2010, Freedom won the World Superyacht Best Rebuilt award in London. “It’s the Oscars of the yachting industry,” McMillen says.
It’s no wonder. Brought back lovingly in full splendor, Freedom represents the very finest expression of the age and its aspirations. “Freedom was the most refined and finest-looking of the boats that [Trumpy] built,” he says. “The joinery, the details, the hardware…everything about her is sort of perfect in my opinion.”
McMillen laments a turn away from that balance and proportion among this generation’s newly minted billionaires. “Everything I see today, it’s glitzy and shiny and big, but you lose me there,” he says. “In my opinion, the billionaire of today is most interested in building bigger. They’ve lost sight of how to build a beautiful boat.”
“These wooden boats are organic,” he says, returning to the crafts he loves like family. “You get a sense that they’re a living, breathing organism. They have almost a human-like attachment. There’s something about going to sea on a wooden boat.”
One might almost consider it irresistible.

1935, 85' Enticer leaving Chesapeake Harbour Marina. Probably around 1998-9. At the time she owned by the Independence Seaport Museum of Philadelphia. Operated by Capt. Rick and his wife. I did day work and crewed some cruises on her for 2 summers.

Seakeeper gyros stabilize two classic wooden Trumpy yachts

Vintage Trumpy yachts are notoriously hard to stabilize. Fins and wings aren’t compatible with the unique wooden hulls and they can be easily damaged. Working with McMillen Yachts and Moores Marine, Seakeeper’s internal gyro stabilization systems provide the perfect solution for classic Trumpys Enticer and Motor yacht America.

“There was no way to stabilize Enticer until Seakeeper internal gyros,” said McMillen Yachts owner Earl McMillen III. “The installation was pretty straightforward and the partners are ecstatic with the performance.”
An 85′, 1935 Mathis-Trumpy, McMillen Yachts’ Enticer is part of its fractional ownership fleet. Seakeeper and McMillen teamed up to retrofit a M21000 gyro under the master bunk. Actively-controlled, the quiet gyro delivers a powerful righting force for superior stability while at anchor, zero and low speeds, as well as underway.

“We recently had a luncheon party aboard,” said McMillen. “We anchored off Newport, Rhode Island. It was really windy with constant 8′ to 10′ swells, but thanks to Seakeeper not one wine glass hit the deck. I would estimate that the gyro dampened the roll at least 70% to 80%. Everyone onboard was surprised and pleased that we didn’t have to move to a more protected anchorage.”
“M/Y America’s owner asked for a Seakeeper gyro because he didn’t want anything protruding from the hull,” said Moores Marine service manager Nathan Smith. “Old-style wings can catch and sink a boat. The Seakeeper is entirely internal and much more effective.”

M/Y America is a 75′ Trumpy built in 1965. Owned by Theodore B. Conklin, she is now being offered for charter. A Seakeeper M7000A gyro was installed by Moores Marine Yacht Center of Beaufort, North Carolina. Highly effective over a range of conditions, the advanced unit virtually eliminates boat rock and roll for unmatched comfort.
“I was onboard during all the sea trials and you could feel a drastic difference between when the gyro was on and when it was off,” said Smith. “It just took the roll away.”
McMillen Yachts was established in 1992 to restore and maintain classic boats. In 1995, the company introduced fractional yacht ownership, enabling enthusiasts with limited time away to participate and share in the passion.
Founded in 1986, Moores Marine specializes in antique and classic wooden yacht restoration. The company has completed more than 100 major projects on some of the finest American yachts ever built.

Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography
April 30–june 21, 2003.
Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography , an exhibition of 20th-century photographs of Moscow, opens at Columbia University's Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 and remains on display through Saturday, June 21, 2003.
Moscow has been a powerful magnet for many Russian photographers of the 20th century. Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography presents the work of 31 photographers, whose images have defined the visual experience of Moscow from the 1920s to the present. Diverse in form and strategy, the 90 photographs chosen for the exhibition trace the history of Russian documentary photography and offer insight into individual practices. From Aleksandr Rodchenko's constructivist visions and Evgenii Khaldei's humanist landscapes to Igor Moukhin's scenes of urban spectacle and alienation in the works of Russia's key 20th-century photographers, Moscow ventures beyond the expected image as a site of famous landmarks, architectural treasures and dramatic lifestyles.
Early 20th-century photographers Boris Ignatovich and Arkadii Shaikhet saw themselves in the vanguard of an emerging mass-media culture, defining with their cameras the visual experience of Soviet modernity. For nearly 70 years, Soviet photography was assigned the duty of maintaining the ideological rigidity of the Soviet State. Yet, as examples of the work of Iakov Khalip, Anatolii Egorov, Mikhail Savin, and Mark Markov-Grinberg show, Soviet photographic practices were much more complex than has been previously acknowledged. The works of these photographers remain intensely compelling to a modernist eye.
Contemporary Russian photographers, such as Lev Melikhov, Valerii Stigneev and Sergei Leontiev, engage with the legacy of the Soviet documentary photography. But for them the documentary is a complex and multivalent genre, which incorporates subjectivity, ambiguity and reflexivity and comments on social and cultural issues without losing sight of the position from which that commentary is made. In the recent photographs by Vladimir Kupriyanov, Igor Moukhin, Anna Gorunova and Pakito Infante, the "real" space of Moscow is replaced by an imaginary and optical spaces of virtuality.
The works in the exhibition are on loan from Moscow's Cultural Center Dom, and many are being shown outside Russia for the first time. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Wallach Art Gallery is publishing an illustrated catalogue with a scholarly essay by the exhibition curator, Nadia Michoustina, a Ph.D. candidate in Columbia University's Department of Slavic Languages. The essay presents a nuanced history of Russian photography of the 20th century, and contributes to an interpretation of extraordinary images.
