Japan Yacht charters

Quite far from other popular sailing destinations, not many of us know about sailing vacations in Japan. But those who did try to charter boat in Japan find Japanese yachting scene very welcoming, often going out of their way to help visitors. Until resent years you could hardly find some privately owned yachts in Japan as infrastructure was poor and sailing was not very popular. However, in the early 1990s local government decided to develop yachting industry building new marinas and organizing various international regattas.

Luxury Yacht Rental in Japan

Luxury yacht charter guide to japan.

A destination that has been enticing travelers for centuries, Japan may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think about a yacht charter, but it’s definitely a seaworthy spot that leaves a lasting impression. The southern shores are endless, with the scattered island pearls reached from Okinawa serving up turquoise beaches and gentle remote vibes. Further up following the Seto Sea can take you to big name places like Kyoto with its geisha alleyways and Zen like vibes. Tokyo on the other hand is where old meets new. No matter where you turn, Japan is sure to live up to its rare reputation.

Reasons to Charter a Yacht to Japan

Secret sights.

From the coy glance of Kyoto’s geisha to meditating with monks in mountain monasteries, the bowing deer of Nara, and the hot spring bathing monkeys, Japan is etched with secret storybook sights. For yacht charter guests looking for shrines and skyscrapers, Zen like gardens and whole islands turned into contemporary art museums, Japan seems to have a thousand secret doors just waiting to be cracked open.

Scenic Landscapes

Cast your glance over the snowy peaks of Mount Fuji, fall in love with frothy pink cherry blossom, and get your fill of ornate temples, shrines, and the cool towering shade of bamboo forests – Japan is a joy to behold. From skiing to snorkeling, the tapestry of scenic landscapes invites you to sun yourself on tropical beaches, hike up vertical mountains, or to stand in awe gazing at poetic architecture of castles and temples stashed away in soft undulating hills.

Enchanting Culture

From Kawai dress up to the famous sushi bars and fish markets, the bubbling beauty of a steamy Onsen at the end of a long day, and the morning joy of a gentle cup of Matcha tea, Japan always seems to simmer with some new enchantment. No where captures this better than the juxtaposition of immersing yourself in Tokyo and Kyoto. While one is a thrum of bright lights and liveliness, the latter is soft, elegant, and a maze of hidden alleys and traditional tea houses.

Heart of rock and beautiful beach

Where to Visit in Japan

Endless adventure awaits in the bright lights of Tokyo, whether its stumbling out of all-night karaoke bars in Shinjuku, dining on Michelin starred sushi, catching a sumo wrestling match, or splurging in the shopping district of Harajuku. Few cities in the world offer as much varied appeal and epic scale of things to do than Tokyo. Be sure to hit up the Tsukiji Market for an early morning display of monstrously sized tuna, admire the temple and shrine architecture of the Senso Ji and the Meiji Jing, see Mount Fuji and the cherry blossoms close by, and eat your way through the finest restaurants and quirkiest pop culture cafes.

Nicknamed the Hawaii of Japan, Okinawa and the islands in the south are a gauzy glorious vision of tropical vibes, coral clad dives, primeval forests, shimmering peaks, and lost mangroves. It has a different feel to the rest of Japan despite being peppered with perfect ramen dishes, bustling fish markets, and historic shrines. Okinawa is super yacht centric thanks to its sublime sailing playground and sugar white sands. But even beyond the beach, there’s more than 160 islands to explore.

From the inland Seto Sea to Kyoto takes you on a voyage just like the traders of old, mapping out a traditional journey to one of Japan’s most authentic cities. Kyoto is a world away from Tokyo, offering gardens, geishas, temples, and tea houses. Boasting a wealth of UNESCO sites, ancient festivals, and the chance to wander through the ten thousand torii gates of the Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto serves up so much history and Japanese folklore to feed your richest fantasies. Speaking of feasting, Kyoto is also home to Japan’s traditional haute cuisine.

When to Charter a Yacht to Japan

For those looking to see Japan in her best cherry blossom dress, the best time to sail to the Hanami heaven is between the months of March and May. If you prefer to see the temples peeking out of vibrant foliage then the autumn months of September to November are also magical. Typhoons can be a problem particularly in Okinawa between the months of July and August.

  • Important pre-arrival information: The Japan Coastguard (JCG) require an Advance Notice of Arrival. See Formalities for all the details .
  • Japan is an island country in East Asia. It is located in the Pacific Ocean and lies off the eastern coast of the Asian continent. It stretches from the  Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and the Philippine Sea in the south.
  • The total population of Japan is about 127 million, about 90% of whom live in cities. The majority of the Japanese practice Shintoism or Buddism, or a combination of the two.
  • Japan operates on Japan Standard Time. For specifics see General Info .
  • Japan has four seasons. Spring is characterized by mild conditions whilst the summers can be hot and humid. Autumn can be unpredictable with the highest chance of typhoons whilst the winters are generally crisp with clear skies and snow in places. See Weather section below for more details.
  • Japan has over 2,500 ports, so mooring opportunities abound. Visiting yachts typically moor in fishing ports (almost always free), at marinas (of which there about 120 that accept visitors), Umi-no-Eki marinas (“sea stations” – 50 mini-marinas run by local governments), and “Fisherinas” (small marinas operated by fishing co-ops, of which there are about 20 that can handle cruising sailboats).
  • Japanese marinas are priced on a par with marinas in other developed countries and are more expensive in/near the larger cities (Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo/Yokohama).
  • In general, visiting yachts rarely anchor in Japan (except in the southern islands and a few places in the Seto Inland Sea). Most protected bays are well-developed harbors, and anchoring inside official harbor limits is prohibited. Most other protected bays are occupied by aquaculture operations.
  • A major cruising attraction is the Inland Sea (Seto Naikai), which is a large body of water, connected by three passes to the surrounding ocean, and which allows yacht access into the very heart of the country. The place abounds with pretty anchorages or small fishing harbors, but there are also many marinas as well as yacht clubs, which usually offer hospitality to visitors. Those in the smaller places have only basic facilities, while in the larger towns clubs are on a par with the best yacht clubs in Europe or America.
  • Typhoon season runs typically from July to October and it is possible to continue cruising during this time as long as you are watchful and cautious. Japan has very well-built harbors/marinas and an excellent early-warning system, allowing cruisers to seek safe harbor when a typhoon is approaching and then stay there until the danger has passed. The Seto Inland Sea is well protected from most typhoons and northern Japan is another good option as typhoons usually weaken by the time they get there.
  • For more details on yachting services see Yachting Essentials .
  • The Kuroshio, or Black Current, flows from south to north and is a very reasonable way for yachts in Asia to take the North Passage to the US West coast. It is easier to cruise the Japanese Islands moving in this direction.

We have just finished a second cruising season in Japan, having taken CAPAZ from Fukuoka up the west coast to Otaru Marina, in Hokkaido adjacent to Sapporo.

We were able to harbor hop the entire way with no overnight passages. In May the weather and wind conditions were mostly fine as the southern monsoon winds had started. We found the small harbors and towns very welcoming. Most of the tie ups are to a harbor wall and free. Large fenders are strongly advised.

We were able to leave our boat in Fukuoka between cruising seasons under the excellent care of Kirk Patterson, Konpira consulting. He also was a great help in obtaining services, repairs, haul outs, and dealing with local coast guard and customs officials. We were able to get the equivalent of a Japanese cruising permit and were not required to check in to any ports along the way.

Otaru Marina in Hokkaido is a wonderful marina. We are leaving CAPAZ there for another off season. The marina manager, Akira Kadano, was able to help us winterize the boat and source a local boat guy to watch over us, also has helped us with repairs. A good yard and haulout option is there for boats under 20 US tons.

Overall crusing in Japan has been a delight. We have been met with wonderfully kind and curious local people, love the food and affordable prices.

Rob, thanks for this great feedback on cruising Japan. I suspect more and more boats are going to start heading that way now the officialdom has become alot simpler. If you have a blog about your time in Japan, or similar, please do let us know and we’ll add it to our Japan Links section.

Update from Kirk Patterson of Konpira Consulting, Japan: Japan has just entered a seventh Covid surge, setting a new record in infections since the pandemic started (but fortunately not in hospitalizations or deaths). So far, the national and local governments are not re-imposing any restrictions on activities/movement, but they have postponed the start of a campaign to promote domestic tourism. I had previously thought that Japan might open up to foreign visitors in September, but I think this latest surge makes that unlikely (especially as Japan has been carefully monitoring NZ’s experience of a major surge in infections after it ended its long, strict border restrictions). There are some rumors of an October 1 opening, but I think it will probably be late fall or even January 1. All of which makes it hard for the many cruisers trying to make yes/no decisions on whether to prepare for entering Japan next spring (the normal time to arrive in Japan).

The announcement that Japan was opening to all foreign tourists from 1 June led to a great deal of misunderstanding: it does in fact only apply to tightly scheduled tour groups with guides. The number of tourists that can enter Japan each month is capped and maritime borders for yachts are still very much closed. Kirk Patterson of Konpira Consulting Japan told Noonsite; “A national election is scheduled for late July, so it is unlikely that any major opening will be announced before then. September is the earliest likely date that cruisers would be able to enter Japan, however there is still a great deal of uncertainty about what visas will be avail-able. In any case, April-June is the time for foreign cruisers to enter Japan so a September opening is too late for cruisers to come to Japan in 2022.” He adds “I do know, though, that a lot of foreign cruisers are wanting to come to Japan. Compared to 20-30 boats in a typical pre-pandemic year, I’ve got a “possible client” list for 2023-2024 of about 30 boats….and that’s just people who have contacted me, so I would guess that the total number of boats seriously con-sidering coming to Japan as soon as it opens is well over a hundred.”

Hello ? everyone I am an Argentinian living in japan for a while now in Tokyo ! and getting interested in Buying a boat sailing and using the boat as House ! Can someone advise me place to find cheap used boats for buying ! Websites , suggestions, how to save in getting the license for sailing ! Any public institution? For practicing and taking exam ? Any advise is welcome. Messenger Maximiliano Paradiso What’s app +5491164166669

Hi, Maxim…I am a Canadian who has cruised Japan for six years (and lived here for a total of 32 years, 25 in Tokyo). I currently operate a marine-tourism company (see Konpira Consulting ad). For what you want to do, the best way to start is to join the Tokyo Sail and Power Squadron… https://tspsjapan.org ; the membership chairman is John Marshall — [email protected] . TSPS is a group of foreign sailors n Japan, mainly the Tokyo area. Through them you can learn how to prepare for the Japanese boat-license exam and take it in English, can sail on other members’ boats, and get ideas on how to search for a boat (there are several websites for buying/selling boats, but they are all in Japanese). You can’t technically make a boat your official, registered residence, but you can use it as a floating cottage! To moor a boat within commuting distance of Tokyo, though, is very expensive (some TSPS members actually moor their boats in the Seto Inland Sea and fly there 1-2 times a month for some weekend sailing…cheaper than keeping the boat near Tokyo). Anyway, I recommend that you join TSPS and then take it from there. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions — [email protected] . Good luck!

Hey ? Kirk Captain Kirk maybe !? ? Thank you ? for the info ! I will do that ! Is ok with the Japanese websites I have Automatic translation, if you can give me some of them I really appreciate!

I just concluded a passage from Portland, OR to Yokohama, Japan, spending about a month moving from a Wakkanai, Hokkaido landfall to Yokohama Bayside Marina where I left my 60’ s/v Elcano. I had the excellent assistance of Kirk Patterson of Konpira Consulting for the month I spent in Japan and recommend him most enthusiastically for help understanding and navigating through the complexities of Japan. He knows boats having circumnavigated Japan solo and made numerous offshore passages; he knows Japan and the considerable Japanese marine bureaucracy having lived there for decades; he is fluent in Japanese and he is well known in the marinas and sailing communities around Japan. In addition, he is a valuable source of local weather forecasts, local charts and fishing gear hazards, which are ubiquitous, and the specifics of where to find moorage in ports. Kirk can be reached at [email protected]

What were the procedures for leaving? Anything special or notice required?

Mar 13, 2019 06:10 AM

Upon arrival in Okinawa from Tahiti (French Polynesia), we were instructed by the Japan Coast Guard (+81(0)98-951-0120) to clear in at Naha harbor. Best to communicate via email (they reply quickly – using on-line translator): [email protected]

You can easily get the “pre-arrival procedure form” (to mail to JCG prior to landing) with a simple web engine search. The pre-arrival procedure form is rather long, detailed, and clearly designed for large vessels, thus no worries if you can’t fill in all boxes.

In your mail to JCG, ask them to arrange landing location with the Naha port authority (+81(0)98-862-2328) as they don’t speak English either.

Our landing position at Naha commercial harbor: Quay 5 – N26°12’34 E127°40’22

Fee: approx. 300 Yen/night (based on tonnage – 5 tons)

Customs office at Naha Port: [email protected] / +81(0)98-862-8529

All Customs procedures are explained and relevant forms available at: http://www.customs.go.jp/english/law/customsform/form_C_e.htm

For tax-free fuel, you need Customs form C2160 – “Declaration of loading of [your] ship’s stores of domestic goods [i.e. Japanese gas!]”

Sailing boats can’t stay in Naha commercial port. Shortly after completing all entry formalities, you will be asked to move to Ginowan marina (West coast) or Yonabaru marina (East coast).

We moved to Itoman fishing port “Fisherina”, where we stayed 1 week at a floating pontoon. The Fisherina office is closed on Wednesday. No English spoken but friendly and helpful staff with whom we could ‘easily’ communicate through real-time voice translation app. Mooring coordinates: N26°07’43 E127°39’04

Tariffs: 1500 Yen/night (based on boat length – our boat is 35′ feet long) Gasoil/Diesel: delivery by truck at the pontoon upon request (provider called by Fisherina office) Fresh water at the pontoon: 50 Yen/hour (long hose available upon request at the office) Facilities: WC, showers (hot water – 200 Yen/shower), beverages (vending machines)

No Internet / WIFI but if needed, possibility to get connected at the Fisherina office Free public WIFI networks widely available in Okinawa (e.g. BeOkinawa, NahaCity, etc.)

A useful website to get the contacts of the various marinas where you can stop in Japan is http://www.umi-eki.jp (English version available). They do not all speak English on the phone though…

Regarding notice of arrival to Japan Coast Guard: The email addresses for the Ogasawara Coast Guard Station in Chichi Jima is [email protected] and for Kawayama Coast Guard on Honshu is [email protected] .

What is the price of bareboat charters near me?

If you’re looking for a bareboat charter in or around Japan, the price will differ depending on different things. Firstly, the exact location of your Japan boat rental will affect the price as well as how many people are on board, the time of year and the size and type of boat you choose. Below are some average prices by vessel type.

€700/week for 12 people.

€20,400/week in the high season and €14,000/week in the low season for 8 people.

What can you see and do on a boat rental in Japan?

There is so much to see and do in this vibrant and diverse country, and a Japan yacht charter grants you access to the very best. Here is a list of some top sailing destinations in Japan.

  • The Seto Inland Sea: This body of water separates the main island of Honshu from Shikoku and offers sheltered waters dotted with remote islands. You’ll also find a number of historic sites, such as the famous 88 Temple Pilgrimage on Shikoku Island.
  • Izu Peninsula: This peninsula located on the Pacific coast of Honshu boasts a rugged coastline rife with unspoilt beaches as well as healing hot springs. Sail around the volcanic Izu Islands which offer crystalline waters and excellent visibility, perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving. While diving you can see colourful coral reefs, sea turtles and mammals. If you’re lucky you’ll even see some shipwrecks!
  • Okinawa: This southern island group offers beautiful beaches and clear waters, as well as a subtropical climate. Go sea kayaking in Kouri Island or relax on white sand beaches like Maehama and Nakijin. If you want to take a break from the water you can get a taste of Japanese culture. Okinawa is also home to a number of World Heritage sites, such as Shuri Castle and the Gusuku Sites.
  • Hokkaido: Japan's northernmost island presents a world of opportunity for sailors who want to navigate the open ocean in addition to exploring sheltered coves and bays. While on land you can hike through national parks and protected areas, such as the iconic Shiretoko Peninsula.
  • Tokyo Bay: This bay is located in the heart of Tokyo and offers stunning views of some of the city’s most famous landmarks, such as the Tokyo Tower and the Rainbow Bridge.

What is the best time of year to charter a yacht in Japan?

Although the weather conditions vary slightly throughout the country, the best time for a yacht charter in Japan is between April and October, when the weather is warm and there is little to no rainfall. For the hottest weather, you’ll want to visit in August, when you have high temperatures of 30°C.

Skippered boat rental in Japan for a worry-free holiday!

If you’re after a relaxing holiday where you can sail carefree, opt for a boat rental in Japan with a skipper. Skippers are nautical experts who will handle all of the sailing logistics for you, so you can spend your time relaxing on board.

What type of boat is best for a yacht charter in Japan?

If you’re considering a yacht charter in Japan for your next holiday, the type of boat you choose will depend on the amount of time you plan to spend on board the vessel. If you don’t need to sleep on board and you only plan to spend a few days sailing around, we’d recommend a daily charter such as a motorboat or a RIB. For longer holidays catamarans and yachts are great vessels because they are fully equipped with the amenities you need to live on the water. Sailboats are also another great option for a longer charter however, they tend to sway on the water so they aren’t recommended for people affected by seasickness.

Find the best vessel for your Japan yacht charter, and embark on the sailing trip of a lifetime!

Sailing Yacht (Sailboat): From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a skipper who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Skippered Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat hire or yacht charter in Japan you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht hire or skippered yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without skipper depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat hire.

Skippered Charter: A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the skipper, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases skippers will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Japan

If you are on a gulet or skippered yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Japan. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Japan, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Okinawa

Deciding between a sailing boat and a catamaran for your Okinawa adventure with Yachting.Rent comes down to your specific needs, preferences, and sailing goals.

Sailing boats offer a classic yachting experience, perfect for those who want to feel truly connected to the sea. They are great for those who love the thrill of navigating the seas, as they offer more direct control and feedback. Additionally, sailing boats often provide a more intimate setting, perfect for a romantic getaway or an adventurous trip with a small group of friends or family. They are also typically more fuel-efficient, which could be a consideration for longer voyages.

On the other hand, catamarans, with their two hulls, are renowned for their stability and spaciousness. This makes them a great option for larger groups or families with children, as they provide more room for relaxation and play. The stability of a catamaran can also be a comfort to those prone to seasickness. Catamarans often come equipped with more amenities as well, including larger living spaces, making them a great option for those looking for more comfort on their trip.

In Okinawa’s waters, both options will provide an unforgettable experience. The choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran ultimately depends on the size of your group, your sailing skills, and what kind of experience you are looking for. Whether you prefer the intimacy and thrill of a sailing boat or the stability and comfort of a catamaran, Yachting.Rent will ensure that your Okinawa sailing adventure is one to remember.

Yacht charter Japan

Japan is a country of colour and diversity. There are amazing and buzzing districts such as Shibuya and Shinjuku, where you can walk along the spectacular pedestrian area which is lined with restaurants, cafes and shops. You can equally see majestic mountain chains in all their splendour with a visit to Kamikochi in the centre of Honshu or treading the beautiful trail along the river Azusa-gawa. With all this splendour, as well as Okinawa and other islands which will bring you beaches, amazing nature and a wealth of opportunities for diving, a yacht charter in Japan undoubtedly ticks all the boxes.

Don't miss it in Japan

Yacht charter seto sea / uno port, 3 convincing reasons to charter your yacht in japan, 1. enchanting nature.

Japan has thousands of charming gardens to explore, filled with rocks, plants, lakes and fields. There is a wealth of natural parks which remain unmarked by tourism and they are amazing sites to visit. The north of Japan is filled with particularly sumptuous countryside, lush forests and snowy mountains. The beauty of this incredible destination will stay with you for the rest of your yacht charter in Japan.

2. Varied countryside and landscape

Japan is a country that extends for more than 2,200 kilometres and this stretch of land is filled with a variety of landscapes and beauty. This landscape contrasts from cold and wintery countryside in Hokkaido to the extreme heat of the Okinawa islands. There are bays illuminated by immense buildings, zen gardens, Japanese gardens, enchanting forests, rice fields, bamboo forests, lakes, mountains and turquoise seas.

3. Numerous spaces to relax

Weekends in Japan take on a slower pace of life where the locals spend time with family and friends and fully switch off. Let this rhythm of life inspire your yacht charter in Japan. There are numerous hot baths and spa treatments which you can avail of. However, if relaxing to you simply means a gentle wander around the grandeur of ancient architecture, Japan has you covered! There is a wealth of beautiful castles where you can relax in and enjoy the amazing surroundings; some of the most renowned include: Himeji, Nagoya, Kumamoto, Inuyama and Matsumoto.

What to do in Tokyo during your yacht charter in Japan

Tokyo is a town which allies the ultra-modern with the ancient. It’s a city where you can admire the second tallest building in the world as well as explore ancient and precious temples in the same day. You can have a breakfast served by robots and a dinner served in a traditional setting. However, a city with 36 million residents means that there is a distinctly urban feel to this destination and can leave you feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to spend your time. Luckily, we’ve put together a comprehensive list of some of the best sites and places to visit during your yacht charter in Japan.

Visit the Tokyo Tower

The Japanese version of the Eiffel Tower was built in 1961 and is one of the tallest towers of steel in the world. It is 333 metres tall. It is also a radio and TV tower; a visit here will give you an extraordinary panoramic view over the city of Tokyo.

Absorb the technological innovations

Tokyo is the capital of technology and this is only one of the reasons that it will make you marvel. However, the Asakusa quarter has nonetheless remained very authentic. It is in this area that you will find the biggest and most ancient Buddhist temple, Senso-ji. Despite the shops in the surrounding area, this remains a sacred site with a calm atmosphere. In this part of town, you can eat traditional Japanese sushi in a hyper-modern setting. The concept of kaiten-zushi (restaurants where sushi is placed on a revolving belt and you can pick the dishes right in front of you) has existed in Japan since 1958. You can order dishes from a touch screen in some restaurants and several minutes later, a robot will appear from the kitchen and bring you your dish. There are incredible restaurants like this all over the town which will give you a surreal experience during your yacht charter in Japan.

Embrace the hustle and bustle

Odaiba quarter is fun and different with quirky architecture and beautiful restaurants. There are several futurist structures like the Fuji TV building and the Tokyo Big Sight – there is even a statue of liberty. The view over the Tokyo Bay and the skyline is superb. During the night, the Rainbow Bridge illuminates in brilliant colours. You can also discover Akihabara, a place renowned for its numerous electronic shops, arcades and toy shops. You can easily spend an afternoon or a morning admiring the boutiques and the bizarre things you may find within. Many of the shops extend to 5 or 6 floors.

Massachusetts family finds looted World War II artifacts, FBI Boston returning them to Japan

B OSTON — A local family that found looted World War II artifacts in their late father’s personal effects “did the right thing” and alerted the FBI, leading to the feds returning the historic art to Japan after eight decades.

The FBI Boston division announced that it has recovered 22 historic artifacts that were looted after the Battle of Okinawa. These artifacts had been missing for almost 80 years.

The feds got a tip last year after a Massachusetts family sifted through their late father’s personal effects and came across what appeared to be very valuable Asian art. The art included portraits, scrolls, pottery, and an ancient map.

“It looked old and it looked valuable,” said FBI Boston Special Agent Geoffrey Kelly, a member of the FBI Art Crime Team. “And because of this, they did a little research and they determined that, at least the scrolls, had been entered about 20 years ago in the FBI’s National Stolen Art File.

“And once they realized that they were stolen, they reached out to the FBI and it came to me,” Kelly added.

Among the artifacts was an unsigned, typewritten letter stating that these items were collected in Okinawa during the last days of World War II.

The FBI conducted an investigation, and was able to authenticate the artworks.

“One of the basic things to do in this is just do a side-by-side comparison,” Kelly said. “And so we had images of the looted antiquities that were looted sometime in the mid-1940s.

“Not great quality photos, black and white, but still clear enough that you could compare them side-by-side with the antiquities in Massachusetts, and form a pretty good conclusion that they were a match,” he added.

The 22 artifacts — some of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries — represent a significant piece of Okinawan history. The artifacts include six portraits, a hand-drawn map of Okinawa dating back to the 19th century, and various pieces of pottery and ceramics.

“There’s something very climactic about unfurling a scroll,” Kelly said. “I didn’t do it when I recovered it initially because I certainly didn’t want to damage it.”

“The first time that they were unfurled, that we could see them, was at the Smithsonian with the experts,” he added. “And it really is an exciting moment when you watch the scroll unfurl in front of you, and you just witness history and you witness something that hasn’t been seen by many people in a very long time.”

The family’s late father was a World War II veteran, but never served in the Pacific Theater. The local family wants to remain anonymous.

“I think one of the biggest takeaways from this entire investigation is the fact that in this case, the family did the right thing,” Kelly said. “They did everything right. They had some questioned artifacts that they thought might not belong here in this country. They checked the National Stolen Art File. And when they realized that it may, in fact, have been looted, cultural property, they did what they should have done, which is call the FBI.

“We’re not looking to put people in jail because they happened to inherit some objects that have some questionable or dubious provenance,” he added. “We’re here to help to make sure that at the end of the day, it goes back to its rightful owner.”

The National Museum of Asian Art at the Smithsonian Institute helped the FBI ensure that the artifacts were properly packaged for transport back to Japan.

The governor of Okinawa Prefecture on Friday announced the return of the artifacts to Japan in a news conference, saying, “It is very meaningful that the FBI, along with others in the U.S. Government, have cooperated to realize this return.”

A formal repatriation ceremony for the artifacts will be held in Japan at a later date.

California yacht owner threatens to kill dock worker in vicious showdown, cali yacht owner threatens to kill dock worker drops pants for rude salute, 95 3/13/2024 8:09 am pt.

A California yacht owner's vicious beef with a dock worker has reached death-threat levels -- and their exchange was caught on camera and included a nude, and very rude, gesture!

Check out the clip ... it all unfolds when San Diego entrepreneur Ajay Thakore swings by the swanky Marriott Marquis Marina in his rare $4.5M Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht to pick up one of his employees -- but things boil over when dock worker Joseph Holt tells him he can't be there.

Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, flips out on Holt big time ... and starts spewing threats like, "I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill."

And it doesn't stop there -- as Thakore's pulling out of the harbor, he drops trou to make a full frontal salute in Holt's direction. Stay classy, San Diego!

Holt's only retaliation was flipping the bird, and he later told CBS8 that was all he could do to keep his cool and avoid escalating the situation.

Holt says parts of the altercation were not captured on camera, and he adds ... Thakore not only threatened to kill him, but also claimed to have connections who could totally mess up his life.

Holt also says Thakore pulled out $100 bills and tossed them at him, even chucking some in the water.

BTW, Thakore's done some backpedaling since the ugly exchange -- he now says, "The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange."

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

FWIW ... One of Thakore’s employees claims the whole thing began because other dock workers blocked him from boarding the yacht.

Oh, and if that fancy Lambo yacht looks familiar -- it's the same one Chuck Liddell recently tumbled off just last month. Now it's famous AND infamous!

ACMA: GAME'

Amazon has struck first-of-its-kind deals with Japan’s Nippon TV and BBC for podcasts .

The former tie-up will see Nippon’s ACMA: GAME drama series stream on Prime Video Japan starting April 7, immediately after Nippon TV’s Sunday primetime air slot, with global streaming of the series to follow on Prime Video two weeks later. Hulu Japan will also stream the series immediately after Nippon TV’s broadcast as part of the unusual deal.

The deal is Nippon’s first with a global streamer and was brokered by Keisuke Miyata, Head of Sales, Global Business, Nippon TV.

“Japan is known for exhilarating manga, but this one is exceptional,” said Nippon producer Naoto Fujimura.

“Audiences crave psychological death game battles like Kaiji , Death Note or Squid Game , and this has become a production of an incredible scale that Nippon TV will deliver to the world with confidence.”

The producer added that lead Shotaro Mamiya has “unfathomable talent that is perfect to portray this epoch-making series that will surely thrill the global audience.”

BBC podcast deal

Meanwhile, Amazon has struck a deal with the BBC that will for the first time see the corporation’s podcasts made available for streaming outside the UK.

Beginning today, subscribers to Prime and Amazon Music Unlimited services can exclusively access more than 50 of the BBC’s podcasts ad-free, including  Americast, BBC Global News Podcast, Dua Lipa: At Your Service, The Global Story, Infinite Monkey Cage, Planet Premier League  and  World of Secrets.

“Audio storytelling has long been our strength as a global content producer, and with this partnership, we are thrilled to bring our BBC podcasts to even wider audiences,” said Louise la Grange, SVP Audio, Digital News & Streaming, BBC Studios.

The BBC has been seeking more commercial income outside the UK and has therefore been striking deals such as the podcast partnership.

Amazon, meanwhile, has also been innovating with its deal-making, and we revealed another first-of-its-kind deal with Walking Dead maker Skybound last week for Prime Video thriller VAKA.

McDonald's restaurants suffer global tech outage

A person walks outside a closed McDonald's restaurant after the company halted its operations due to a system disruption in Nikko

McDonald's stores across parts of the world were either closed or had suspended online orders Friday after what the company said was a technology outage.

The unspecified issue affected the fast food chain's stores in Japan and Australia, while social media users also reported disruption in China, Britain and elsewhere across Asia and Europe.

“We are aware of a technology outage, which impacted our restaurants; the issue is now being resolved. We thank customers for their patience and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused," a spokesperson for the McDonald's Corporation said.

The McDonald's statement added: "Notably, the issue is not related to a cybersecurity event," responding to speculation that the company might have been the target of an online attack.

McDonald's Japan said in an update on X that "Many stores across the country have temporarily suspended operations." It added: "We apologize for any inconvenience caused to our customers."

In an earlier post Friday morning, McDonald's Japan said: "There is currently a system failure." Japan has almost 3,000 McDonald's stores, behind only China and the United States.

McDonald's Australia also said its stores had been hit by a nationwide system outage.

The South China Morning Post reported that McDonald's said at 2.30 p.m. local time on its Chinese-language Facebook page: "Due to a computer system failure, the mobile ordering and self-ordering kiosks are not functioning. Please order directly at the restaurant counter. Sorry for any inconvenience caused."

In a subsequent update at 4 p.m. local time the problem was fixed, the company said, according to the SCMP.

NBC News has contacted McDonald's for further comment.

Japanese authorities suspect 8 airmen of smuggling synthetic drugs into Okinawa

Prosecutors, not police, decide formal charges under the Japanese justice system.

Prosecutors, not police, decide formal charges under the Japanese justice system. (Vecteezy)

Eight service members at Kadena Air Base may face charges of importing illegal drugs into Japan by mail over the past year.

Japanese investigators on Wednesday recommended drug smuggling charges against three men and five women, all in their 20s, to the Naha District Public Prosecutors Office, an office spokesman said by phone Monday.

He declined to identify the eight individuals or provide updates on decisions to prosecute them.

Each airman is suspected of ordering 10 to 30 grams of a so-called designer drug, MDMB-4en-PINACA, from illegal drugs sales websites and having it delivered to Okinawa starting in May, the spokesman said. The drugs were in liquid form and packaged in canisters used for vaping.

MDMB-4en-PINACA is a synthetic drug created to have similar effect as tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

Okinawa Regional Customs discovered the drugs and reported them to the Okinawa Narcotics Control office, whose agents joined the Air Force Office of Special Investigations on all eight cases, the prosecutors’ spokesman said.

The narcotics control office provided information about the drug sales websites to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, according to an Okinawa Times report on Friday.

“We can confirm that the 18th Security Forces Squadron and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations coordinate closely with Japanese law enforcement on any case involving violations of Japanese law,” a spokeswoman for Kadena’s 18th Wing, Master Sgt. Natasha Stannard, said by email Monday. “The Air Force takes Japanese customs laws seriously and any Airmen found to have committed criminal acts will be held accountable for their actions.”
