How to Build a Yacht in Minecraft

Petra Dolovski

There are many ways to modernize our Minecraft worlds. We do not have to stick to the medieval-ish theme each of them has with its generated structures.

Instead we can take up our blocks and make a whole futuristic world that may better suit our needs. It is just a matter of picking the right way to do this.

Now, of course, if we are modernizing Minecraft, we want to treat ourselves to the best luxuries that we can, and what is a bigger luxury than owning your very own private yacht to sail the seas with?

Getting Started on the Build

Before you start building your yacht you will first want to pick out the right materials for this kind of build. Unlike our ship builds, a yacht is never going to be made entirely out of wood or similar materials like that.

Yacht’s are known for being pearly white, slick, and smooth so they can show luxury and wealth.

The best set of materials you can turn to for this kind of build would be quartz and terracotta blocks.

Quartz blocks are clean white and smooth. They also have slab and stair varieties to them which greatly aid in building a proper shape for this ship.

Other blocks you could choose are andesite and diorite as well as their polished versions.

It would also be good to look at real life yachts for inspiration and to get an idea on how to build one.

Finally, if you have your blocks picked out and feel ready, it is time to find the spot where to build. Building it at a dock allows you to easily access your yacht, but it can prove to be difficult fitting it into an already existing build. You may need to compromise on size and details.

Building it out on the open waters may be a much better idea. It also allows you to build a dock within the yacht for your boats as you sail to it!

For this kind of build it is better to build it bigger than smaller, because that will make it much easier.

Building a Yacht Frame

Just like when building a ship, it is useful to build a frame for your yacht first.

Start by building a straight line with your chosen blocks (mine are cyan terracotta) to determine how long your yacht will be.

For the ship build we usually built ribs to help shape the lower deck of the build, but luckily for us a yacht can be completely flat on the bottom. This particular yacht will also include a dock for regular small boats in the back.

In the image below you can see the layout of our yacht’s lower deck. The lower deck is 21 blocks long (not including the nose of the yacht) and 9 blocks wide.

Yacht lower deck layout

Now, we build our yacht from the bottom up.

I will add an extra line of cyan terracotta above the original frame, just so that it is visible from above water, before building all the walls from smooth quartz.

I will also be adding windows along the terracotta line. It is best advised to keep windows symmetrical on both sides on each level of the yacht.

Yacht walls

The walls will be 3 blocks tall in total for the lower deck, with inside walls separating the space into several rooms. Decorate these as you wish and need.

The very back of the yacht will be where we will include a boat dock for all those arriving by smaller vessels as well as two staircases leading up to the upper deck.

Building the Upper Deck

The upper deck will be just a tiny bit shorter than the lower one and it will include an outdoor area and an indoor area, meant for the steering wheel and where the captain would spend the most time.

From the staircases to the end, the wooden part of the upper deck is 16 blocks long.

Though, we also cannot forget a pointed nose for the dock that extends past the deck.

Yacht upper deck

Now we get to build the cabin with the steering wheel in it.

The front of the cabin will be all window, so we will build it out of glass blocks. There will also be 2 windows on each side as well; one is 2 blocks wide and the other just 1.

This is how the wall layout will look like for the cabin. It will be only 2 and a half blocks tall.

The ceiling we will sculpt using smooth quartz stairs and slabs, just to keep the height low. The stairs and slabs will also help make the slope of the ceiling look smooth.

We then add is slabs around the front window of the cabin.

The final detail we will include in the construction of the yacht will be the little “wings” at the back, just to break up the shape a little bit.

Finished Minecraft Yacht

with that the main construction of our yacht is done!

Adding Details and Decoration

Every build can have details added to it to help shape it or to help smooth out its shape.

The best way to do this is by using stairs on the front of the ship to make the yacht look more slick and pretty. You saw that while we were shaping the ship up a little earlier.

The next thing that we would have to do is, of course, furnishing out yacht. We need a place to seat ourselves and our guests, as well as some for of living quarters.

The lower deck has enough room for a living area and kitchen. The small room beside it is good for storage, while the two rooms at the very entrance can be used as bedrooms!

Give your guests a bed with an ocean view.

Yacht bedroom

I particularly enjoy designing small and cozy kitchens like these. End Rods, if you have any to spare, look amazing as tube lights above your kitchen countertop.

The little corner we left open is good for shelving or to serve as a fridge, as you can see in the image below.

Yacht kitchen

The top deck will have regular outdoor seating. The chairs I will make using my furniture building techniques, as well as the little outdoor table.

Inside the top deck cabin I will include some more seating and a steering wheel.

With that, your yacht should be done and ready for a party!

10 Cool Minecraft Dock Designs

Building a dock in Minecraft is a convenient way to extend your base into the ocean. Docks can be practical and used for catching fish or as a place for storing your boats.

There are many different shapes, sizes, and materials available when it comes to building a dock in Minecraft. The size can range from a small fishing dock to a full “town on the water” with boats. Since most docks are built with wood in real-life, wood is one of the most common building materials.

Minecraft Dock Design Tips

There are many things you can add to your dock design to make it more useful and look better. Here are some ideas to consider:

  • Buildings – Small survival homes or shops can be built directly onto the water or just on the shore.
  • Fishing Spots – An area to be used specifically as a fishing dock. This could be a small square or a long walkway into the ocean.
  • Boat Structures – Large, stationary boats with sails anchored to your dock.
  • Boat Storage – Boats in Minecraft are very small, but you can make a section to place some boats into the world.
  • Walkways – Lighted and decorated walkways on the ocean.
  • Markets – A large square out on the ocean with shop buildings or tents.
  • Beacons – Building a beacon near your dock can provide increased movement speed.

Here are our top picks for the best Minecraft dock designs and ideas to give you some inspiration.

1. Fishing Dock

This is a great example of a small fishing dock that includes some small buildings, lighting, boat storage, and areas for fishing. Since it is so small and compact, it can easily be built on most bodies of water.

Since this dock design is mostly made out of wood, it would not be too difficult to build in any survival world. The buildings can even be used as a storage chest area for all your fishing and boating supplies.

2. Minecraft Harbor

A little more industrial-looking dock design with buildings on the shore, a large wooden platform on the shore, decorative storage boxes, and some ships built on the water.

A really cool addition is the windmill build off in the distance! You could also substitute with a lighthouse or other ocean related building.

3. Simple Wooden Dock

This small fishing dock is probably one of the most simple designs you will find. The use of fences as poles into the water (along with a fence underneath for support) is a fantastic idea.

It would be a cool building idea to build a basement or underground area below the house.

4. City Docks

If you’re building an urban city on the water, don’t forget to build a little bit into the ocean! This Minecraft dock design has a great walkway and decorative walls along the ocean, grass square for trees, and stairs going down to the ocean level.

This design is not made from wood, but the material choice definitely suits the buildings around it. For a dock like this, you could use white concrete blocks or even just regular stone.

5. Medieval Dock (with Shops)

These docks are fairly small and focus a lot on the buildings on the shore. Building using Medieval architecture is a good idea for docks because boats were a major mode of transport in that time period.

Some ideas for the buildings could be to keep quality Minecraft food inside or have a little shop. Connecting the rail tracks to a minecart system will also allow easy access to the ocean!

6. Pirate Cove

If you enjoy building with a pirate theme, this is definitely the dock design for you. You will probably need to find a good location that feels like a hidden cove or bay. After all, pirates don’t usually live right out in the open on the beach!

Doing your potion brewing here might be a good idea, or even storing your valuables like gold and diamonds.

7. Cargo Dock

This Minecraft dock idea is designed around unloading massive container ships. Due to the size and scale of this build, it may be better done on creative mode!

Since this design is more urban, installing a Minecraft texture pack is a smart idea.

8. Ocean Town

A cool idea for an ocean dock in Minecraft is to add lots of buildings and make a full town. As seen in this video, it is easy to add buildings right along your walkways and even add some height to those buildings.

When building a bigger town, it might be smart to build some decorations for the town. Some ideas could be to build some statues or add some seating areas with trees.

9. Village Docks

If you’re building a village right on the water and want some docks built nearby, this design will work nicely. The use of walls and stairs going down to the dock area gives the feeling that the dock is quite separate from the village.

10. Warehouse Pier

A neat little warehouse with large doors and a small dock nearby. The warehouse can be used to store goods and the railway can be connected to other rail systems.

Stacking blocks outside like pumpkins, watermelons, and chests is a great idea as well.

That concludes our top picks for the best Minecraft dock designs . Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Leave a comment below!

15 Fun Ideas for What to Build in Minecraft

The coolest minecraft build ideas for 2023.

15 Fun Ideas for What to Build in Minecraft - IGN Image

When it comes to Minecraft, at some point you'll likely ask yourself "what on earth do I build?" Perhaps you’ve booted up Minecraft in 2023 and created a new world after being away from the game for a while. Or, maybe you're feeling bored right now, and that happens too! In the end, the equivalent of writer's block slaps you in the face, and you need some creative ideas for your next Minecraft build. (Need to start with a guide first? We have you covered with the Minecraft Building guide and How to Mod Minecraft wiki).

Never fear, as we’ve compiled a shortlist of the best things to dedicate your time and build talent to with these fun Minecraft build ideas:

15 Top Minecraft Building Ideas

Tried and true, a house is a necessity for almost every Minecraft player. We’ve all started with the hole in the dirt, or the tiny wooden box for the first couple of nights. But rather than settle for a bland, flat box for a home, why not strive to create something that reflects you and your passions? If you want to replicate a house from your favorite media, then you can use pictures for reference or check out our list of Minecraft house ideas .

Minecraft House

If you want to do something wholly unique, throw out conventional structures and do something weird, cute, quirky, or cool. With Minecraft being the ultimate creativity tool, don’t limit yourself to the bare essentials of survival within four walls.

Castles can be a grand spectacle if done right and can be relatively easy to put together if you plan out the design ahead of time. Begin by laying out the floorplan, as well as the perimeter wall that will surround your castle. Maybe add in a moat and drawbridge for an extra sense of flair.

Minecraft Castle Build

Consider which angle of fantasy you are aiming for, and that will dictate the blocks you use, color schemes, and decoration aesthetics. As with any Minecraft build, the more forethought you give to a build, the better it will turn out, and the more likely you will be to follow through and have the determination to complete it.

Minecraft Boat Build Example

A good accompaniment to a castle, or as a standalone build depending on the scale, constructing a seaworthy vessel can be a challenging but fulfilling experience. Due to the limitations of Minecraft, a boat has less functionality than other structures, however, if you’re wanting to have a home base that isn’t just a box, building a boat as your HQ can reinvigorate your playthrough.

The ultimate test of perseverance and determination, but also the challenge that offers the biggest dopamine hit as the project starts coming together; the city build. Sure, you don't have to create something this legendary right away, but for collaborative Minecraft builds that are quite legendary, we had to throw in this GoT city for inspiration.

Minecraft City of Kings Landing (from Game Of Thrones)

The further you push the scale and detail, the harder it will be, so compartmentalize. Don’t worry about furnishing the insides of each and every building as you go; you can put a sign down or make a mental note of what you’d like each building to be.

5. Animal Farm

Another build you are likely to do naturally if you’re playing in Survival; there are various ways to create an animal farm. The most common way is to lure a pair of the same animal to a spot near your home and pen them in. Rinse and repeat for various different mobs, and you’ll have an infinite supply of meat, eggs, wool, milk, etc.

Minecraft Animal Farm/Farmhouse

If you’re wanting to take your animal farming to the next level, you can produce intricate systems, involving Redstone or not, that can automatically farm animal resources for you. This will of course almost always require you to lure the animals in the first place, but if you’re a particularly busy bee you can ensure valuable materials are continually being gathered even when you’re off exploring.

6. Treehouse

Treehouses are a wonderful way of spicing up your Minecraft lifestyle. Whilst you can incorporate any tree in any biome into your home, the obvious best choice here is a Jungle biome, simply due to the height (and therefore real estate) you can produce without too much obstruction or limitation.

Minecraft Treehouse Build

Whether you’re going for an inconspicuous shack or an interconnected series of huts, there are many Treehouse ideas to get you started on your new life high in the sky.

A seemingly trivial affair, right? Just place some blocks over a bit of water. Why not make it more exciting though? If your surrounding builds have a particular theme, why not style the bridge to fit in with that aesthetic you're going for?

Minecraft Bridge Build

Another option is to start a project based on a real-world bridge , be it Golden Gate or London Bridge, there are countless options that you can choose your design from. These types of builds can be particularly effective when attached to City builds, or for people who are fans of LEGO Architecture . What’s better than having both a physical and digital model of a famous landmark?

An often-overlooked element that can be incorporated into each and every house you build, the garden in Minecraft is an accentuating feature that can really enhance the aesthetics of your home. It also acts as an excellent reason for you to collect the various plants and flowers you encounter, as well as saplings for trees you’ve found in various biomes should the size of your garden permit them.

Minecraft Garden Build

You can take this idea one step further by making a humongous garden to walk through, acting as a flower show or park for you (and any multiplayer friends) to enjoy and relax within. Also see: Where to Find Flowers in Minecraft .

9. Fountain

Another easy addition that can enhance other elements of your builds, throw down some fancy stone and dig a small hole - but no swimming! If you’re wanting to go big, design a small statue to sit atop the fountain, maybe even incorporate some Redstone to make your water flow intermittently through spouts to make it as realistic as possible.

Minecraft Fountain Build

If you want an easier approach to having a showpiece atop your new fountain, you can use an Armor Stand with some shiny armor (and pose it if you’re in Bedrock Edition).

10. Library

A build that is particularly easy to assemble if you’re in Creative is a Library, as it can be as big or small as you wish. All you need is an outer shell of a building, shaped and designed however you wish, and an absurd number of Bookshelf blocks!

Minecraft Library Build

Whilst you may not consider it at first, like many other projects, you can model the library you build off of a property that is near and dear to you - your local library. Alternatively, if you want to make the jump into fiction, consider building the dusty library of Hogwarts , Belle’s library from Beauty and the Beast, or the Jedi Archives if you’re wanting to stretch your creative abilities. (Who remembers the Uncensored Library Minecraft map from 2020?)

11. Landmarks

An awe-inspiring yet also functional build idea, you can choose an open area to build a monument, be it from fiction or nonfiction. Attempt to recreate the Statue of Liberty, Big Ben, the Space Needle, Mount Rushmore… the list goes on.

Minecraft Statue

If a real-world landmark doesn’t whet your appetite, why not build a statue of your favorite superhero? Large-scale builds like this not only result in impressive art pieces, but they can double up as literal landmarks so that you can more easily navigate your Minecraft world if you don’t have other tools at your disposal. (Also see: 11 Incredible Skyrim-Inspired Minecraft builds , top Mario Minecraft builds and these amazing Harry Potter Minecraft builds ). Besides, it would be pretty difficult to lose your house if a gigantic Eye of Sauron loomed over it.

12. Evil Lair

Why not let out your more conspicuous side and give in to the theoretical dark side? If any of the previous entries haven’t been to your liking when it comes to creating your forever home, aim for something villainous. The juxtaposition with Minecraft’s mostly bright and blissful nature provides a refreshing nature to your gameplay, and by default demands a different approach to the building process. Do you create secret passageways hidden by paintings? Tripwires and secret traps to catch those entering your base unaware? The sky is the limit when it comes to your dastardly schemes.

Minecraft Evil Lair Build

You can choose to base yourself in the Nether if you wish, or you can bring some of the Nether to you and construct a dark fortress or underground lair that intimidates any and all who come near it (even if you’re playing in Single player).

13. Aquarium

Be it large or small, an aquarium always manages to become a huge draw of attention, bringing people from far and wide to see exotic fish and marine creatures. With the ever-expanding list of water-dwelling mobs in Minecraft, there hasn’t been a better time than now to work on constructing an aquarium of your own.

Minecraft Aquarium Build

From a small fish tank inside your home to a major building in and of itself, the options are limitless. As you enter more endgame content and can explore underwater areas more comfortably, you’ll have more and more opportunities to meet (and subsequently catch) different fish that you can then add as your latest exhibit on display.

A particularly fun project if you’re aiming to RP a lot in your world, a museum can not only act as a storage facility, but also a trip down memory lane. Your first enchanted pickaxe that’s this close to breaking, your first diamond, the remains of a beloved animal lost all too soon; these gems can all live here.

Minecraft Museum Build

With materials like the more recently added Bone blocks , you can also recreate fossils and skeletons to put on display, and precious pieces of artwork to admire.

15. Pixel Art

Sticking with the idea of art pieces on display, something that is entirely plausible for each and every Minecraft player, regardless of skill level, is pixel art. The blocky pixel-based art style of default Minecraft lends itself excellently to projects like this. Be it your favorite anime character, a shot from a beloved film, or the spiciest of memes, the only limit is your imagination.

Minecraft Pixel Art Example

Minecraft Boat Dock Ideas [Top 10]

Learn how to create every kind of dock in Minecraft, from little river docks to huge docks.

Docks can be useful for fishing, world exploration, and avoiding mobs in the water. Many players seek different ideas to build captivating docks that fulfill their purpose and enhance the world’s outlook.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • You must craft the Medieval dock if you are up to a challenge and achieve a unique yet rewarding dock experience in the game.
  • I will also recommend Smart Dock , which can be interactive using the Redstone Circuit.
  • These dock ideas might be challenging to start, but a little help from a friend and some effort can make the overall experience worthwhile.

Medieval Dock

Medieval dock in Minecraft is considered a difficult dock to build, but don’t worry. I’ve got you covered.  You’ll need to gather simple materials first, which include:

  • Spruce wood
  • 5 flat stone slabs
  • 6 smooth stone slabs
  • Wooden planks
  • Cobblestones or any other block to adorn the dock
  • Choose a suitable lake or river for your dock, ensuring sufficient water depth.
  • Use cobblestones to create a level platform, ensuring the blocks connect for stability.
  • Add wooden boards for a pathway, choosing between vertical or horizontal placement. Use spruce slabs for floor outlines, adjusting the length as desired.
  • Enhance the dock with patterns, arches, or columns for a captivating look.
  • Create railings with cobblestones along the sides, preventing falls. Complete the design with a wood trapdoor by the waterside.

Fishing Dock

Constructing a Boat Dock allows players to express creativity using various materials. For a fishing dock, I carefully chose materials and strategically placed 7 to 8 cobblestone pillars in the water.

The space between these pillars is filled with spruce wood or other chosen materials for the top surface.

Next, I used wooden planks and slabs for the floor, railings, and cobblestone for the foundation. Adding benches or chairs enhances your experience. Further improvements, such as a lighthouse or underwater viewing area, not only increase visibility but also engagement with the environment.

This strategic use of the fish caught from the dock as a food source contributes to the overall appeal, making it an excellent Minecraft Dock Idea.

Easy And Minimalistic Dock

Harbor dock.

Building a functional and stylish harbor dock in Minecraft is a step-by-step process toward success. I chose a suitable location near the shore or river for convenience. The materials I gather include wooden planks, cobblestone, Redstone, iron bars, and stone bricks.

  • Build two blocks of suitable length first, then place Redstone beneath them. Create a wooden frame after that. Outline the spruce fence and add hoppers.
  • Use stone bricks to create walls around the harbor to protect boats from waves and storms. Lay wooden planks on the ground to form the floor of the dock. Place iron bars on the edges of the dock to create sturdy railings.
  • Place cobblestone blocks in the water to create mooring posts for boats to tie up to.
  • Add a square wall to the area around this frame. Add a lighthouse , a crane, or a storage shed to the harbor for added functionality and style.
  • I recommend visiting Avomance as he has provided a perfect guide to it. Create a breakwater using cobblestone blocks to protect the harbor.

Smart Dock Using A Piston

  • First, grab some Redstone circuits and pistons in Minecraft. You’ll also want activation devices like levers or pressure plates. Now, as for the Redstone dust, lay it out and link it to those pistons all along the dock. Trust me, it’s gonna be one smart dock!
  • The Pistons must be towards the water and in the retracted position. Connect the Redstone circuit to a lever, pressure plate, or other activating device.
  • Utilize the activation mechanism to test the dock. The boat should be pushed onto the landing pad by the extended Pistons. Consider practicing with smaller, simpler circuits before trying a more complicated project like this.
  • This Smart dock can be constructed from slabs of dark wood. Start with the lining, then add seven blocks to it.
  • A beam will be sunk into the ocean floor to support the need. If you like, you may even add a trapdoor, or you can also use campfires just for detailing purposes. In short, this smart dock is very famous among players with technical perspectives.

Redstone Dock

For the construction, I gathered Wooden Planks, Redstone Dust, and Iron Ingots. The area of the dock is a modest 4x3x3, all crafted from wooden planks.

  • To set the stage, I positioned the dispenser on top. Placing Redstone Dust beneath the oak plank or on the center block of the bottom row is crucial.
  • Connect the hopper to the dropper. Activating the Redstone Dust with a switch or a pressure plate will cause the dock to extend.
  • Fill the place with water.
  • Add the strings and an outline of wooden planks. Finally, fill it with more redstone dust and cover the top completely.
  • You can modify the size and materials used in the dock based on your preference and the resources available in your game world.
  • To construct Redstone docks , you must learn the essentials of Redstone wiring because they will not function otherwise.
  • Redstone circuitry might be complicated to build at first, but with practice, it will become natural and easy. Additionally, experimenting is essential to be considered a professional Minecraft player.

Automatic Boat Dispenser

To set up an Automatic Boat Dispenser Dock, I opt for a highly flexible and automated system. The boat dispenser functions like an elevator, aiding my swift escape from the secret underwater base with just a button press.

This dock’s significant advantage is that you can conveniently enter the boat from any spot you want without fearing it breaking. It assists you in protecting not only your boats but also your weapons, fire packs, splash parts, eggs, and snowballs .

  • To Build a dispenser or boat elevator, place a dispenser block and put seven cobblestone s in the crafting grid .
  • Right-clicking the dispenser while it is on the ground will reveal its inventory. You can add a boat by right-clicking on the dispenser.
  • Put redstone dust on the ground next to the dispenser and use redstone torches to link it to the dispenser.
  • After that, use redstone wires to attach a button to the Redstone dust and place it close to the dispenser. Press the button to start the dispenser and send a boat into the water.

KevSham’s Dock

Opting for KevSham’s design, I find it to be the most inviting boat dock in Minecraft, especially when situated near a lake. To ensure vital underwater support, I gathered plenty of logs, though you can use jungle wood if you prefer a different aesthetic from dark oak.

It is the most straightforward dock design you can create, and it is also one of its most remarkable qualities: it is complexity-proof. This dock can be created just as any other dock built above. It just depends on your preferences. However, you need to check the rigidness of the dock first by jumping into the water to ensure it is ready to use.

Decore the dock however you want with torches, railings , and everything. Moreover, you can create this dock by following the perfect step-by-step process by KevSham itself.

Embracing the challenge, I decided to furnish my dock as a luxurious house, offering the unique experience of living on a boat or within a small, charming house. The construction process involves using simple materials like spruce logs, spruce planks, glass, and dark oak.

  • To begin, place at least six pillars, starting from the water’s base and extending upward, using spruce logs as the foundation.
  • Now, fill the rest with glass and spruce plank. Also, add support between the pillars to make the base more strong. You can keep the see-through base for a sea view, making it even more special.
  • Finally, cover the whole bottom with oak slabs . After the base is finalized, start working on the house.
  • Make it as appealing as you want. Add an aesthetic yet contemporary touch to your cute little dock house.
  • Use plants and white stained glass panes for the window decoration. Add lanterns on all sides of the house to make it more appealing.

Underwater Dock

Diving into the trend, I’ve noticed the growing popularity of underwater docks among Minecraft players. Despite the appeal, the intricate design of these docks often induces a sense of anxiety in many creators.

Sand or gravel can be used to clear the underground space for this dock. However, building underwater may seem complicated, but it also gives you the huge benefit of staying away from the wandering mobs on the ground.

This dock will require a lot of material in your inventory as it requires a sturdy base for the structure to stand and not float away. It is best recommended to use glass panes for the surrounding walls to have a clear view of the surroundings.

Most importantly, keep the roof slanted  to let the water run off and not make a burden.

Magma Block will help you in the construction. Use the underwater gear to make the boat come up and down.

Underwater lights will help you keep the house lit all the time. You must build this boat dock to spice up your boring Minecraft playthrough.

My Thoughts On Boat Docks

The House Dock is my top pick among dock ideas. It offers a stylish house doubling as a boat dock, requiring easy-to-find materials like wood, stone, and sand. Easily constructed at the game’s start, it combines building a charming small house over the water with a dock, making it my favorite.

The house dock can also serve as a central base for those wanting a main base over a body of water.
