2021 Ugotta Regatta supported by the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau. Thank you.
Sailboats from across the U.S. head to Harbor Springs each summer for one of the nation’s best-known sailing traditions: the LTYC “Ugotta” Regatta. Hosted by the Little Traverse Yacht Club, the Ugotta brings some of the best sailboat racers in the country to sail in one of the world’s best sailing venues in Little Traverse Bay. The Ugotta Regatta takes place annually the weekend following the second of the Mackinac Races (Port Huron-Mackinac, Chicago-Mackinac). This year we are celebrating the 60th running of the LTYC Regatta!
LTYC’s Ugotta Regatta is open to all boats 22ft and above so come join us: registration is first come, first served. The racing begins with one-design fleet racing on Friday followed by one-design and tour-of-the-bay courses on Saturday and Sunday.
The weekend’s festivities kick off bright and early Friday morning with a fun tradition: a line of happy people outside Irish Boat Shop waiting to purchase the coveted Ugotta Regatta t-shirt. Each year, the shirt design changes!
New this year is a pre-race party to benefit junior sailing at the American Legion Hall. Friday night finds a Welcome to Harbor Springs celebration at the Irish Boat Shop. LTYC hosts parties at the Yacht Club both Saturday and Sunday afternoon for Regatta participants. The awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon is not to be missed!
The Ugotta Regatta brings to Harbor Springs hundreds of crew members and their families from across the midwest—and beyond. Race watchers either head out onto the water in power boats or watch from the Petoskey State Park or Petoskey’s Sunset Park.

Nearly 100 boats expected to sail in 61st annual ‘Ugotta Regatta’ this weekend
Little Traverse Bay will fill up with colorful sails this weekend as the Little Traverse Yacht Club’s ‘Ugotta Regatta’ gets underway. (Courtesy photo/Charlie MacInnis)
There’s nothing quite like the sound of a sail as it catches the wind. And this weekend, approximately 100 boats will be hoping to fill their sails as they race through the bay. This Friday kicks off the 61st annual Ugotta Regatta, a favorite three-day event beloved by the sailors who participate, and for those just watching from shore. This event is hosted by the Little Traverse Yacht Club (LTYC) but depends on the hospitality of the entire town in order to truly pull it off each year.
“Little Traverse Bay is one of the world’s premier sailboat racing arenas,” Michael Esposito, President of Irish Boat Shop, said. “The regatta is a large event and brings a lot of people into our small town for a short period of time. For many sailboat racers, this is the highlight of their summer.”
Sailboats in this year’s races range in length from 22 feet to 70 feet. The one-design races begin on Friday followed by more one-design racing and Tour-of-the-Bay courses on Saturday and Sunday.

“The boats range from four crew members to about 15 for the bigger boats. On average, I would say boats have about eight crew members,” Dunne Saal, Rear Commodore for LTYC, said. “ On Friday, the One Design boats do a windward/leeward course. On Saturday and Sunday, all boats, except J70, Melges 24, and Alerion 28, race a Tour-of-the-Bay course, which is a course around most of the fixed orange marks in the Bay. Best place to watch the racing would be from a boat, but if you don’t have access to a boat, you can see from the shoreline, like Beach Drive or the Petoskey waterfront. If you are in a boat, please make sure you stay clear of the racers.”
Harbormaster Mike Johnson agrees that the best place to be is on the water to watch the races.
“The best place to be is by that Harbor mark to watch the lot,” Johnson said. “But people should be careful to stay clear of the racers. And definitely shouldn’t be out there near those marks on paddle boards, especially on Saturday and Sunday.”
Nearly 100 boats will set sail this weekend for the 61st annual ‘Ugotta Regatta’ around Little Traverse Bay hosted by the Little Traverse Yacht Club. (File Photo)
The Chicago to Mackinac Island race has just finished and boats will head to Harbor Springs beginning on Wednesday.
“The bulk of the boats coming in to race arrive between Wednesday and Thursday,” Johnson said. “And this is the first time ever I’m using the east dock to take care of regatta. They’ll be rafted two deep on the east wall, which has never happened before. We’re going to have 40 boats here at the city marina.”
The boats are split between Irish docks and the City marina, making the waterfront a site to see with the various boat designs, burgees, and out-of-town guests.
This year’s regatta will also include a tribute to local sailing legend Dave Irish in the form of a race within the race.
“This year’s regatta will include the first annual J/111 Great Lakes Championship,” Esposito said. “In recognition of Dave Irish’s contributions to the J/111 class and Great Lakes sailboat racing, the class will award the David H. Irish J/111 Great Lakes Championship Perpetual Trophy to the winner each year. For everyone at the boat shop, awarding this trophy will be a highlight.”
But as new pieces are added to this favorite regatta, old favorites still remain. The weekend’s festivities will still begin with the early Friday morning reveal of this year’s one-of-a-kind Ugotta Regatta t-shirt.
“Each year the regatta t-shirt design is a closely guarded secret and not revealed until they go on sale Friday, July 29th at 8:00am,” Esposito said. “ Shirts cannot be pre-ordered, or purchased by phone, or online. You have to show up in person to grab one of these coveted shirts and quantities are limited, so be sure to arrive early”.
The regatta party is back in full swing this year welcoming crew and family to town with a celebration at Irish Boat Shop hosted by LTYC. LTYC also hosts parties at the yacht club Saturday and Sunday afternoons for participants. The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday afternoon once racing has concluded.
With a diverse fleet, an impressive number of participants, and water levels at a more ideal level for docking, this year’s race now just depends on good weather and fair winds.
The general consensus around town and with sailors is that it’s good to see this beloved weekend of racing back in full swing. But for those who may not be sailing this weekend it’s still a wonderful time to enjoy the sites and busy summer streets of Harbor Springs. From the Saturday Farmer’s market to the various shops and places to eat around town, Harbor Springs welcomes all this weekend.
“Yes, there is great sailboat racing out on the bay,” Esposito said, “but onshore Harbor Springs provides folks with a very special, family friendly place to enjoy the weekend.”
