Remembering Michael Jackson's 'Ghosts', the forgotten terrifying movie follow-up to 'Thriller'
31 October 2022, 15:57
By Tom Eames
Michael Jackson always had a fascination with horror and Halloween, and followed up his iconic 'Thriller' music video with a fantastic mini-film to promote his latest track, 'Ghosts', in 1996.
Michael Jackson didn't just make music videos for his new releases, he crafted full-length short films, full of dance routines and glamour, often telling a story in the process.
In 1996, he brought out 'Ghosts', a mini-film to promote the song of the same name and other tracks from his albums HIStory and the upcoming Blood on the Dancefloor.

But it hasn't quite had the legacy as some of his other iconic music videos, perhaps the victim of making so many other incredible clips.
Thankfully, Michael Jackon's official YouTube page has released the film in full in time for Halloween 2020. But what is it all about and how was it made?
What was Michael Jackson's Ghosts and when was it released?
Michael Jackson - Ghost (Official Video) 2021 Full Version
Ghosts was a short film starring Michael Jackson, and written by horror icon Stephen King alongside Mick Garris, and directed by Stan Winston.
It was filmed and first aired in 1996 alongside selected showings of the film Thinner .
It was then released on home video a year later around the world on LaserDisc, VHS and Video CD.
- When Michael Jackson revealed his rare deep speaking and singing voice
Ghosts tells the story of a man with supernatural powers who is being forced out of a small town by its local mayor.
According to Garris, Ghosts was "the most expensive music video ever made" at around $15 million, all paid for by Jackson himself.
Which Michael Jackson songs appear in Ghosts?
Michael Jackson - Ghosts (Official Video - Shortened Version)
Ghosts includes several dance routines performed by Michael Jackson, set to the songs: '2 Bad', 'Is It Scary' and 'Ghosts'.
These songs were taken from Jackson's albums HIStory (1995) and Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix (1997).
What is the plot of Michael Jacksons Ghosts?
The mayor (played by Jackson using prosthetics) of Normal Valley leads an angry mob to the mansion of the 'maestro' (Jackson), who has been entertaining local children with magic tricks and ghost stories.
The children tell their parents that the Maestro has done nothing wrong, but the mayor wants to banish him as a "freak".
- Michael Jackson's unearthed Suzuki commercial from 1979 might be the coolest ever
The maestro then challenges the mayor to a 'scaring contest': the first to become scared must leave the house.
The maestro performs magic tricks and dance routines with his ghostly group, and then possesses the mayor, forcing him to dance too.
After the performance, the maestro agrees to leave and fades to dust. However, he returns as a huge demon.
Terrified, the mayor jumps through a window. The remaining families agree that they all had fun, and allow the maestro to stay after all.
The film intended to send a message about the importance of tolerance and acceptance, reminding people how wrong it can be to judge and fear others just because they are "different".

TAKING THE LONG-FORM MUSIC VIDEO TO RECORD-BREAKING LEVELS
In 1996, with the campaign to promote his HIStory album in full swing, Michael Jackson set out to make a music video that he and horror novelist, Stephen King had dreamt up several years earlier, in 1993. Looking to follow up on the success of his 1983 masterpiece, ‘Thriller,’ masterfully directed by John Landis, Michael originally planned a short music video for the song, ‘Is It Scary,’ which was originally written, but not used, for the 1993 film Addams Family Values. When Michael expanded the track and the concept, the project became for a time, the longest music video ever created, a short feature clocking in a 39 minutes and 32 seconds and renamed, “Michael Jackson’s ‘Ghosts’.”
Originally the writer/director Mick Garris (Stephen King’s “The Stand,” Hocus Pocus, Critters 2) was slated to write and direct the short film, but in 1996 when Michael Jackson was finally ready to green-light ‘Ghosts,’ Garris was committed to another project, a three-part mini-series based on King’s The Shining. Garris recommended effects wizard Stan Winston (Pumpkinhead), to take over the reins. Michael Jackson called Stan personally to ask if he might consider directing the film. Stan agreed with only one condition: that Michael would play all the lead roles.
“I wanted Michael to play the haunted house guy,” said Winston, “but also the mayor of the town, and an evil demon who comes in at one point. Michael wanted badly to be accepted as an actor, as something more than the King of Pop. But it was so difficult for people to get past Michael’s persona, I thought that the only way he would be accepted as a real actor was if he played all these parts, disguised in makeup, so that no one would know it was him until the end. And he was very agreeable to that idea.”
Michael played all five of the main characters including, The Mayor, The Maestro, The Skeleton, The Super Ghoul, and The Ghoul Mayor. Filming took place over six-weeks of intense production. Although ‘Ghosts’ was originally supposed to be 12–15 minutes long, the final running time of nearly 40 minutes landed the film in the 2002 Guinness Book of World Records as the longest music video in history, a record that held till 2013 when Pharrell Williams released his 24-hour music video for ‘Happy.’
BEHIND THE SCENES OF GHOSTS
As director, Stan Winston chose to implement many and varied special effects. Winston included a number of never-before-seen visual effects which were created by the newly formed computer graphics division of Stan Winston Studio, Stan Winston Digital. This division would soon become the start of the company Digital Domain–through a partnership between Winston, James Cameron and ILM’s Scott Ross.
The film tells the story of a strange and mysterious Maestro who is set upon by some angry locals who persecute him for being different and weird. Winston’s most significant script change to Mick Garris’s original script, saw the introduction of The Mayor, who leads the townspeople against the Maestro. The confrontation occurs in the Maestro’s mansion, where the Maestro conjures up a dancing ghost family, including a CGI skeleton that dances as only Michael Jackson can dance.
Later in the video, Michael appears as the Super Ghoul and enters the Mayor’s body to transform him to Mayor Ghoul. The film ends with the Maestro scaring the Mayor from the mansion as he wins over the people of the town.
GHOST FAMILY
SWSCA artist/insructor, Bruce Spaulding Fuller designed the ghastly dancers’ makeup. Each dancer has a distinct personaliy and every dancer has specific and individual characteristics to its makeup and costuming.
In the video, ghostly dancers appear at first in ectoplasm form, then they take on solid form. These corporeal ghosts walk and jump on the walls, twirl on columns, and dance on ceilings. The effects were achieved by using a compination of digital compositing, some CGI enhancement and many in-camera tricks.
Parallels between the film’s storyline and the rumors then circulating about Michael Jackson’s private life, led to ‘Ghosts’ getting only a very limited release. Michael Jackson’s ‘Ghosts’ premiered at the end of 1996 and was released along with Stephen King’s horror movie, Thinner . ‘Ghosts’ was screened at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, and it won the Bob Fosse Award for “Best Choreography in a Music Video.”
There were accusations about MJ’s inappropriate behavior with young children–charges more serious than just being “different” or “weird.” These charges would follow Jackson for the next twelve years until his untimely death at age 50 from a drug overdose. But, Stan Winston, interviewed at the time, said, “I’m still proud of the way ‘Ghosts’ turned out, though. And I really enjoyed making the film with Michael. He was a complete professional throughout the process — the consummate performer.”
‘Ghosts’ was Stan Winston’s last project as a director. He went on to take a more active role in film production as a producer. As he put it, “Producing allows me to develop projects, to be part of the creative process of making movies, but in a way that isn’t all-consuming. I call producing, ‘directing – without the responsibility.’ And I like it that way.”

Background [ ]
The track was initially written in 1990 for Dangerous under the title "Ghost". [1] Teddy Riley is credited as the producer. Although it didn't make the cut, "Ghost" would be re-recorded and reworked in 1993 for the HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I album, now titled "Ghosts". It once again wasn't featured on the album. The track was finally tampered with for the last time in 1996.
The song itseld is speculated to be referencing Jackson's fight with individuals in the industry, who turned their backs on the King of Pop over the years, with lyrics such as "You put a knife in my back, shot an arrow in me" seemingly confirming it.
Music video [ ]
The clip is a montage of scenes from the Michael Jackson's Ghosts short film.
In 2017, a demo of "Ghosts" would leak online. Different sources state it originates from 1993, other claim it is a much later version from 1996. Throughout the recording, Michael mostly mumbles or sings with much lower-effort.
[Verse 1] There's a ghost down in the hall There's a ghoul upon the bed There's something in the walls There's blood up on the stairs And it's floating through the room And there's nothing I can see And I know it fled its tomb Because now it's haunting me [Refrain] I don't understand it Hey! I don't understand it! Aaow! [Verse 2] There's a tapping in the floor There's a creak behind the door There's a rocking in the chair But there's no one sitting there There's a ghostly smell around But nobody to be found And a coughing and a yawning Where a restless soul is going [Refrain] Don't understand it (Got a ghost, got a break in the walls) Hey! (Got a ghoul, got a break in the halls) Don't understand it! (Got a ghost, got a break in the walls) (Got a ghoul, got a break in the halls) (Got a ghost, got a break in the walls) (Got a ghoul, got a break in the halls) (Got a ghost, got a break in the walls) (Got a ghoul, got a break in the halls) [Chorus] And who gave you the right to scare my family? And who gave you the right to share my baby, she needs me And who gave you the right to shake my family tree? You put a knife in my back, shot an arrow in me! Tell me, are you the ghost of jealousy? The ghost of jealousy [Verse 3] There's a tapping in the floor There's a creak behind the door There's a rocking in the chair But nobody's sitting there There's a ghostly smell around But nobody to be found And a coffin in-lay open Where a restless soul is spoiling [Refrain] Don't understand it! (Gotta ghost, gotta break in the walls) Yeah, yeah! (Got a ghoul, got a break in the halls) Don't understand it! (Got a ghost, got a break in the walls) You’re just a dog gone! (Got a ghoul, got a break in the halls) Aaow! [Chorus] And who gave you the right to scare my family? And who gave you the right to share my baby She needs me And who gave you the right to shake my family tree? And who gave you the right to take intrusion To see me? And who gave you the right to shake my family? And who gave you the right to hurt my baby She needs me And who gave you the right to shake my family tree? You put a knife in my back, shot an arrow in me! Tell me, are you the ghost of jealousy? A suckin' ghost of jealousy Aaow! And who gave you the right to shake my family? And who gave you the right to share my baby She needs me And who gave you the right to shake my family tree? And who gave you the right to take intrusion To see me? And who gave you the right to hurt my family? And who gave you the right to hurt my baby, she needs me And who gave you the right to scare my family tree? You put a knife in my back, shot an arrow in me! Tell me, are you the ghost of jealousy? The ghost of jealousy Aaow! [Outro] Dog gone But there's no doubt about it, piece of mind Tell me, are you the ghost of jealousy?
- Lyrics from "Ghosts" were reused in another song featured on the remix album, " Is It Scary ".

The Jackson 5 have found their harmony once again for the upcoming biopic “ Michael ” from director Antoine Fuqua and Oscar-winning producer Graham King .
After a worldwide search led filmmakers to cast Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as the King of Pop , with 9-year-old Juliano Krue Valdi as the younger Michael, fans have been eagerly waiting to see who would round out the rest of the Jackson family.
The film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, is currently in production. Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo assumes the role of family patriarch Joe Jackson with Nia Long as mother Katherine Jackson , plus Miles Teller as lawyer John Branca.
“The truly epic nature of this film required a total of ten actors with the talent to portray the Jackson 5 through the years,” said King announcing the casting. “I’m thrilled to bring this extraordinary group of actors and performers to worldwide audiences in this film.”
Younger Jermaine actor Harville (15, from Newport Beach, Calif.) makes his film debut in the movie, but began his career with Disney Jr. in a commercial for “Doc McStuffins” when he was five. Younger Marlon actor Hunter (14, born in Granada, Spain) is a stage veteran, who made his Broadway debut in “The Lion King” as Young Simba in 2021 and previously played a young Marlon, as well as understudied the role of young Michael, on the national tour of “MJ: The Musical.” Younger Tito actor Edwards (a native of South Orange, N.J.) has appeared on Hulu’s “Saint X” and voiced characters in Netflix’s “ADA Twist” and Nickelodeon’s “Blaze And The Monster Machines,” among other roles. McIntyre (a New York native) is best known for his roles on OWNs’s “David Makes Man,” the Disney+ movie “Magic Camp” and Netflix’s “Barry,” as well as playing a Young Simba in Disney’s “The Lion King,” both on tour and on Broadway.
“Michael” is produced by King and the co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate, Branca and John McClain. Fuqua directs from a script by Oscar-nominee John Logan. Lionsgate is distributing the film domestically, while Universal Pictures International will handle all territories apart from Japan, which Lionsgate will oversee.

The confrontation occurs in the Maestro's mansion, where the Maestro conjures up a dancing ghost family, including a CGI skeleton that dances as only Michael Jackson can dance.
Michael Jackson's transformations included a scene where The Maestro stretches the skin of his face. Paul Mejias did a clay casting of Michael's head from a life-cast impression. This sculpture served two purposes: first it was used to cast the skin that Michael pulls off, revealing the skull underneath; secondly, the casting served as a form to sculpt Michael's skull as the Skeleton.
Paul Mejias's skull was used as the digital reference model for Michael's skeleton dance. In one of the first instances of early motion-capture techniques, by putting markers on Michael's body, his captured performance was able to drive the movements of the digital character that later transforms into the Super Ghoul.
Later in the video, Michael appears as the Super Ghoul and enters the Mayor's body to transform him to Mayor Ghoul. The film ends with the Maestro scaring the Mayor from the mansion as he wins over the people of the town.

“The truly epic nature of this film required a total of ten actors with the talent to portray the Jackson 5 through the years,” said producer Graham King in a press release Tuesday. “I’m thrilled to bring this extraordinary group of actors and performers to worldwide audiences in this film.”
Meet the actors!
Jaafar Jackson
Kevin Mazur/Lionsgate; Pete Still/Redferns
The late singer’s 27-year-old nephew Jaafar Jackson is set to play his uncle. After searching for someone to fit the part, King said, "It was clear that he is the only person to take on this role."
King added that he was "blown away by the way he organically personifies the spirit and personality of Michael” and was “beyond thrilled that he has come on board to portray his uncle and cannot wait for the world to see him on the big screen as Michael Jackson."
Though Michael will mark his acting debut, Jaafar is no stranger to the entertainment industry. Jaafar has been singing and dancing since age 12, according to Deadline , and previously appeared in several family-oriented projects over the years, including 2015's The Jacksons: Next Generation and Tito Jackson's 2021 music video "Love One Another."
Juliano Krue Valdi
Juliano Krue Valdi, 9, will portray a young Jackson, a big role in his first feature film.
“If anything, casting the role of the young Michael was more difficult than casting the adult role, because where do you find a child actor with the chops of the greatest entertainer who ever lived? In the end, that was our focus – talent – and we looked far and wide for an actor who could embody Michael’s spirit through his voice, his charisma, and his dance skills. Juliano’s undeniable, raw talent put him at the top of our list,” Fuqua said of Valdi’s casting.
Valdi has also played roles in Bite Size Halloween and Face's Music Party , per his IMDb .
Jamal R. Henderson
Courtesy Lionsgate
Former model Jamal R. Henderson will play Michael's brother Jermaine in his adult years. Henderson got his start in acting on the Netflix hit Mindhunter, before going on to star in the BET feature South Central Love.
On Instagram Tuesday, Henderson shared his excitement about taking on this role.
"Sorry if I've been a lil preoccupied lately... IT'S FINALLY OUT!," his caption began. "Filled with so much joy and gratitude to be apart of this iconic story. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿"
Jayden Harville
Playing young Jermaine, 15-year-old Jayden Harville is making his film debut in Michael. A California native, Harville has been in commercials since the age of 5 (when he was in a Disney Jr. Doc McStuffins ad) and currently has a role in Nickelodeon's improv comedy incubator show.
Adult Marlon actor Tre Horton got his start in school theater, playing an orphan in Annie when he was 8. A triple threat, Horton has been trained in singing, dancing and acting, landing roles in Amen Corner , A Chorus Line , and Beauty and the Beast.
He has also found success on TV, playing a lead role in 2023 miniseries My Enemy Alpha, according to his IMDB .
Jaylen Lyndon Hunter
Jaylen Lyndon Hunter, 13, will play Marlon as a kid. Hunter was born in Granada, Spain and got his start in Memphis with the Young Actors Guild. As an actor, songwriter and dancer, Hunter recently concluded touring with Broadway's The Lion King as Young Simba.
Hunter is not new to the role of Marlon — he also played young Marlon in the first national tour for MJ: The Musical .
Ryhan Hill, who will be playing adult Tito, is a dancer and actor who has made a name for himself in Hollywood. He is a series regular in BET+'s The Michael Blackson Show , and has also been credited in Grey's Anatomy and Lovecraft Country.
On the dance side, Hill was in Childish Gambino's memorable "This is America" music video and has shared the stage with artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Bebe Rexha and MC Hammer.
Judah Edwards
Young Tito is portrayed by Judah Edwards, a New Jersey Native with a long history in child acting. He can be seen on Hulu's Saint X , and as the voices of characters in ADA Twist on Netflix, Blaze And The Monster Machines on Nickelodeon and Dee & Friends in Oz on Netflix.
Joseph David-Jones
Joseph David-Jones plays older Jackie in Michael. He had a lead role as Connor Hawke/Green Arrow on The CW’s superhero series Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow , and starred in the CW sci-fi series 4400.
He can be seen in a long list of television and films, including Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit and Roman J. Israel, Esq. with Denzel Washington and Colin Farrell. This is also not David-Jones' first time working with Lionsgate — he was a costar in The Divergent Series: Allegiant.
Nathaniel Logan McIntyre
Young Jackie is being taken on by Nathaniel Logan McIntyre, who is from New York. He has acted in David Makes Man on the Oprah Winfrey Network and played the lead in Disney+'s Magic Camp.
He was in another biopic on Netflix called Barry, about Barack Obama's early years. McIntyre has also had experience in modeling, commercials and theater, playing Young Simba in Disney's The Lion King before it went on Broadway and continuing the role.
Michael : Everything We Know About Antoine Fuqua's Michael Jackson Biopic
Jermaine Jackson's son, Jaafar, will lead the film.
Vulture reports that the biopic has been in development since 2019, but it finally picked up steam when Fuqua joined the project. The director, who began his career working on music videos for Prince and Toni Braxton, is excited to bring Jackson's story to life. “I was influenced to make music videos by watching his work—the first Black artist to play in heavy rotation on MTV,” Fuqua said. “His music and those images are part of my worldview, and the chance to tell his story on the screen alongside his music was irresistible.”
Michael is currently slated for an April 18, 2025 premiere. Keep reading for everything else we know about the film so far.
Which Years of Michael Jackson's Life Will the Film Cover?
The exact plot of Michael is under wraps. Still, you can expect a look into the singer's life and career, including his tumultuous upbringing, his early days as a member of The Jackson 5, his solo debut, and potentially his untimely death at the age of 50. Given the singer's massive music catalog, we’ll surely see his greatest hits woven into the film as well.
Who Will Play Michael Jackson?
Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, will portray his uncle in the film. Jaafar is the son of Michael's older brother, Jermaine. Last year, Fuqua announced the casting decision on Instagram with a picture of Jaafar dressed in his uncle's signature look. The caption says, “Proud to announce Jaafar Jackson as Michael—the motion picture event that explores the journey of the man who became the King of Pop. Coming soon.”
This year, Jaafar celebrated the project by posting a few behind-the-scenes images on Instagram. In one picture, he seems to have mastered his uncle’s famous toe-tap. He captioned the post, “The journey starts Monday.”
The Rest of Michael 's Cast
The film will likely feature all of Michael Jackson’s immediate family. According to Variety , Michael's brothers have been cast by two actors each, who will play them in their younger and older years. Michael's sister, Janet, is the only person missing from the call sheet. It's unclear if she'll be in the film or not. Check out the casting below.
Jermaine: Jayden Harville (young), Jamal R. Henderson (old)
Marlon: Jaylen Lyndon Hunter (young), Tre Horton (old)
Tito: Judah Edwards (young), Rhyan Hill (old)
Jackie: Nathaniel Logan McIntyre (young), Joseph David-Jones (old)
The cast also includes Colman Domingo , who will play Michael’s father, Joe Jackson. In an interview with Variety , Domingo spoke about the role. “Not only am I fortunate to have a rich, complex, and flawed character to portray in Joe Jackson, but I also have a front-row seat for Jaafar’s incredible transformation,” he said. Meanwhile, Nia Long will star as Michael’s mother, Katherine, and Miles Teller will play Jackson’s entertainment lawyer, John Branca.
We'll keep this story updated as we learn more about the film.

Other previously announced roles include Colman Domingo as patriarch Joe Jackson ; Nia Long as the music star’s mother , Katherine Jackson; and Miles Teller as manager John Branca.

There’s no word on whether Michael , which is coming together in cooperation with Jackson’s estate, will address accusations that the singer sexually abused children. The star’s estate previously defended him against such accusations, which were a focus of the 2019 HBO documentary Leaving Neverland .
