There have been a number of mysterious ghost sightings and eerie paranormal experiences and the Queensland town even has its very own ghostbusters.

People have recruited Kylie Samuels and her team to identify paranormal happenings at their homes and have sent her pictures to determine what kind of poltergeists may be skulking around them.

Ms Samuels even created a Facebook page, Toowoomba Ghost Chasers, which has attracted a large following.

Ms Samuels has been interested in the paranormal since she was young and as she got older she started visiting cemeteries and took photos.

“After finding a few unexplained things in my photos, we decided to start a page just to share the pictures,” she told news.com.au.

“We have heard many stories from Toowoomba. We get a lot of people asking us to come investigate their homes as they are convinced they have something there.”

Ms Samuels said there were plenty of paranormal incidents happening in the town that not even she could explain, but there are some ghosts who make themselves known.

“We have our famous ghost girl we have captured a few times who we call little red girl. She seems to follow us around the Drayton cemetery.” Ms Samuels said.

HAUNTED HOUSES

According to Toowoomba’s ghost hunters, many poltergeists live in historic buildings around the city.

Locals have reported seeing a lady in a long, grey dress carrying keys on a metal ring inside the Gowrie House, a heritage-listed villa and YWCA hostel.

It is believed the rattling of keys can be heard in dead silence and the ghost has been spotted by both staff and visitors.

“Oakdene” is another historic house with a chilling story.

According to the ghost chasers, a man in a brown suit is often seen passing the front windows.

“A heartbeat can also be felt in the bed beside existing residents,” the ghost chasers said.

It is believed a mother and daughter once haunted another house named “Longview”, which was built in the mid 1800s. Even though it was knocked down in 1956, an eerie presence is still felt at Mount Lofty, which is right near the eastern end of North Street where the house used to stand. There is also a mysterious figure often seen at the Toowoomba Railway Station.

She is described as an attractive woman, wearing a long dress and gloves and carrying an umbrella. Ms Samuels said it was believed to be Elizabeth Perkins, a woman who died at the station in 1944.

MYSTERY OF MAGGIE HUME

Ascot House is one of the more chilling haunted houses in Toowoomba.

It’s another heritage building that was built in the 1870s for Frederick Hurrell Holberton, who was a member of the Queensland Legislative Council.

The mansion was bought in 1984 by renovator Lois Jackman and not long after moving in, Ms Jackman noticed the walls felt like ice and heard bellowing footsteps through the empty home.

She later discovered a ghost name Maggie Hume was still very much alive in the historic building. Maggie was a lonely servant who drank a lethal dose of strychnine, a toxic chemical used as pesticide, in July 1891.

According to John Pinkney’s book Haunted: The Book of Australia’s Ghosts, Maggie had a scandalous secret for the era in which she lived. She was unmarried and pregnant.

The book claims Ms Jackman tired to find the identity of the ghost for 20 years and only learnt the truth in 2004, after trawling through historic documents and police records.

Before discovering the truth, Ms Jackman spoke to a neighbour who lived on the street for 70 years. The neighbour used to play with the children of previous Ascot House owners, who told her there was a ghost inside, and they had seen it.

One night Ms Jackman was in her home, and entered a room which needed new wiring and light fittings. A stream of light was peeking into the room from the hallway, allowing Ms Jackman to see what was only in front of her.

“When I was about halfway, I got a shock. Someone dragged their finger across my left shoulder. I swung around to confront whoever it was. No one was there. Immediately I started to rationalise. I was tired. It was nerves. I’d imagined it. Or perhaps I brushed up against a potplant,” she told Pinkney.

“But there were no plants in that room. My desperate attempts at denial didn’t work. I had to admit to myself that something — a finger — had definitely touched me.”

Years after Ms Jackman began to trawl through newspaper clippings to find more out about what happened at Ascot House, she received a call from somebody who heard of her research.

That person was related to Maggie, the 23-year-old housemaid for Frederick Holberton.

According to Pinkney, Maggie has been spotted in the house for centuries.

That’s just one of many eerie stories that circulate around the town, and Ms Samuels believes them all to be true.

“I believe Toowoomba is one of the most haunted towns and I think it’s due to the history of our town and the fact that a lot of the old buildings are still around,” she said.

A man on his deathbed stunned hospital staff when he claimed to be an infamous terrorist — and it turned out he was telling the truth.

The stuff of nightmares: Is this Australia’s most haunted town?

The stuff of nightmares: Is Toowoomba Australia’s most haunted town?

You are alone in a room of a stranger’s home, and you feel chilly fingers wrapping themselves around your leg. For most of us, this is the stuff of nightmares. But for Toowoomba’s Kylie Samuels it’s just part of her investigation of the city’s paranormal activity.

Toowoomba has been dubbed Australia’s most haunted town, and Samuels agrees. As part of Toowoomba Ghost Chasers , she receives regular requests to investigate hauntings.

The equipment the chasers use to document evidence of paranormal activity includes cameras, voice recorders, and devices that detect electromagnetic energy such as the K2 Meter . “We also use a spirit box as a way to communicate with spirits,” Samuels says.

Samuels’ interest in the spirit realm began when she was young, and intensified after her sister died in an accident: “I became obsessed with trying to prove [her] spirit was still around,” she says. While many are sceptical about the findings of the Toowoomba Ghost Chasers, Samuels is unperturbed. “I know what I’ve seen and felt and heard,” she says. “We always try and find other explanations for ghostly photos or videos, but sometimes they’re just unexplainable.”

Things that are difficult to explain have been happening in Toowoomba for a long time, according to Don Talbot, a local historian and author who has written 40 books including the best-selling Ghostly Tales of Toowoomba , which was first published in 2004 and has been reprinted eight times.

The first recorded ghost sighting occurred at the Royal Bull’s Head Inn , and was documented in a newspaper article in 1909. Talbot says at least 50 ghosts have been sighted In Toowoomba, including a colourful cast of characters.

One famous character is the Lady in Grey, who is said to frequent  St Vincent’s Hospital . She may have been a member of the Sisters of Charity, who established the hospital in 1922. “She was first seen in the medical ward in the late 1970s and assists patients when staff are not around. Her presence has been recorded by nursing staff and patients,” Talbot says.

Another notable is the young girl who haunts the Toowoomba Repertory Theatre . “Actors going down to the dressing rooms are warned to ‘watch the third step’,” Talbot says. “A number claim to have found their passage marred by thin, invisible hands clasping their ankles.” She is believed to have hanged herself while she was imprisoned in the local reformatory.

Others include the ghost of Maggie Hume, the 23-year-old maid from Ascot House who was unmarried and pregnant, and who poisoned herself in 1891; and Mrs Perkins, the wife of a brewery manager who was killed by a steam train when her shoe became trapped in the line at a level crossing. She haunts the Toowoomba railway station.

While Talbot doesn’t describe himself as a believer, he doesn’t disbelieve in ghosts either. “There are always strange occurrences and presences for which there is no logical explanation,” he says.

However, some Toowoomba residents are sceptical about the supposed supernatural happenings. Member of the Toowoomba Historical Society Beris Broderick is one critic. “Of course there are a scant number of believers of the paranormal, however the vast majority of sensible people are sceptics,” Broderick says.

Broderick has been a volunteer at the Royal Bull’s Head Inn, reputedly home to a ghost, since 1973, and denies any hauntings. According to Broderick, the only unusual incidents are “opossums in the ceiling of the old kitchen or occasional mice, all swiftly dispatched”.

Shirley Rylance, who lived in Toowoomba between 1939 and 1974, remembers unusual encounters of a different kind. When she started primary school, the older children would leave cryptic markings on blackboards to frighten the younger ones. The teachers put an end to it. “We were told very strongly that there was no such thing [as ghosts],” Rylance says. “And they jumped on the older children for trying to scare the younger ones.”

Another sceptic is Peter Cullen, a teacher and historical society member. In his role conducting “Tombstone Tours”, he has wandered alone at night through Drayton and Toowoomba cemeteries without experiencing anything supernatural. “I don’t think Toowoomba is any more haunted than any other town,” he says. “It is just that some have preyed upon the gullibility of certain people to promote this for mercenary reasons.”

Regardless of personal opinions about the paranormal, Toowoomba’s reputation for hauntings has been good for business. Talbot says groups are spending nights visiting haunted venues and staying at the Royal Bull’s Head Inn.

If you want to find out for yourself, pay a visit to the beautiful historic city. Just look out for those freezing fingers.

Cool new edge to Toowoomba’s old ghosts

TOOWOOMBA’S ghosts are no strangers to publicity – the paranormal activity here has attracted historians, ghost chasers and storytellers near and far.

TOOWOOMBA'S ghosts are no strangers to publicity - the paranormal activity here has attracted historians, ghost chasers and storytellers near and far for decades.

But now, the ghosts have Facebook and YouTube.

Cyberspace is the new campfire and the online presence of Toowoomba's haunted past is attracting a new generation of ghost-chasing locals.

Toowoomba Ghost Chaser's Katie Harvey said she thought people had been interested in Toowoomba ghosts anyway, but with the recent publicity feel more comfortable about opening up and sharing their own spine-tingling encounters.

"It's not as taboo. There's a cool edge to it," she said.

Former mortician Aaron Mulligan and his partner Angie Wright investigate the paranormal in Toowoomba and are starting up a Ghost and Crypto zoology investigation group.

"Working as a mortician and seeing that light flick out of someone's eyes when they die got me started thinking there might be more to death."

Mr Mulligan believes ghosts remain not because of unfinished business, but rather as energy which stays attached to a particular place and materializes in mysterious ways.

Renowned Toowoomba author Don Talbot has spent years documenting the tales of the region's most prolific spirits and history of haunted buildings and gets calls "once a fortnight" from people claiming to have seen a ghost.

As the renewed interest appears in Toowoomba's ghostly history, Mr Talbot revisited some of the most famous ghost stories from his book, Ghostly Tales of Toowoomba, first published in 2004.

It might be a relief to know he ended with a disclaimer - "99% of Toowoomba ghosts are harmless," he said.

TELL US YOUR GHOST STORY

George Watts: Oh the stories to tell! I believe they are real. And my favourite spook is the top of North St on the East End. The lookout is an old aboriginal burial ground. A car load of five of us went ghost hunting one night and pulled up there. Reversed quick smart after only a couple of minutes and returned half an hour later and couldn't see it again. There were people there, crouching in the trees. My step sister and I never mentioned what we'd seen to each other until several years later and we described the exact same thing in the exact same tree.

SPOOKY RIDE: Toowoomba set to get city ghost tour

BE VERY afraid Toowoomba – you could be getting your own ghost tour.

A ghost tour could be coming to Toowoomba.

Don't miss out on the headlines from News. Followed categories will be added to My News.

BE VERY afraid Toowoomba - you could be getting your own ghost tour.

The owner of the city's most popular ghost hunting Facebook page has considered turning the numerous sightings and hauntings into a fully-fledged bus ride.

Kylie Samuels runs Toowoomba Ghost Chasers, which has amassed more than 36,000 followers since it started seven years ago.

The avid supporter of the paranormal first asked her followers whether they'd be interested in a tour, and has since made plans to make it a reality.

"I'd been watching an old post on the page and thought instead of people going by themselves, why not organise to get together and do a tour?" she said.

"I know a few years ago there was a convoy of people who got together and met in the same places, but nothing like a proper tour.

"I think we've had so much interest in the last few years with the different pictures and videos that we get sent, so it makes sense.

"I've had an offer of someone to drive the bus, so I need to see where I could hire the bus out.

"Because I've had so much interest on the page, I think it could be a big thing."

Toowoomba is infamous for its ghost sightings and has been declared one of Australia's most haunted towns by several media outlets.

Ms Samuels said the city's commitment to holding onto its heritage and architecture had contributed to the ghostly reputation.

"It's definitely the history, and the fact that we kept all our heritage homes - people just love being scared," she said.

The Toowoomba-raised woman first fell in love with the paranormal when she had her first encounter with a ghost.

"I went to the cemetary many years ago, and when I was looking back at the pictures, I saw a figure where there shouldn't have been one, so I posted it on Facebook," she said.

"When I noticed there weren't many pages about it, I decided to set it up."

To register your interest in the tour, head to the group's Facebook page .

It’s been a while since we’ve been in the big, rich town that Tariq St. Patrick — and rest of Power Book II: Ghost ‘s characters — inhabit. But that doesn’t mean we haven’t been eagerly gathering information in advance of the Starz series’ upcoming Season 4.

Fans of the show will recall that Tariq ignored his mother’s and Tommy’s advice and essentially started a war at the end of Season 3. He approached Noma about a business partnership but soon learned the hard way that she’d already teamed up with Effie and the Tejada kids. Cue the brutal shootout!

Now that you’re caught up on the chaos, read on for everything we know about the upcoming fourth season!

How did Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 end?

power-book-ii-ghost-season-4-everything-we-know

In the Season 3 finale, we learned that Diana Tejada — and not her mother, Monet — made it possible for Tommy to find (and potentially kill) Tariq’s mom, Tasha. But Tommy lets Tariq know that it’s all good: Tommy and Tasha finally worked through the issues stemming from when she killed his fiancée, LaKeisha, during Power Season 6.

Though Tommy warned Tariq against going after Monet, the teen didn’t listen. So when Diana came to ‘Riq and offered to help him take out her mother, he agreed. But then Tasha interfered by pulling off a drive-by shooting on Monet. And when a vengeance-seeking Cane asked Diana if she saw who shot their mom, she said it was Tariq. (Cane didn’t know, however, that Dru and Diana had been plotting to destroy their mother the whole time.)

Tariq regrouped and tried to forge a new business partnership with Noma, but quickly learned that Cane, Diana, Dru and Effie were working with her instead. In the shootout that followed, only Brayden had Tariq’s back. (Read a full finale recap here .)

NEW YORK (AP) — Oprah Winfrey’s latest book club selection is an author and ghost writer’s life story, chronicling her journey from prison and drug addiction to collaborating with the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and others.

Lara Love Hardin’s “The Many Lives of Mama Love: A Memoir of Lying, Stealing, Writing, and Healing” was published last summer.

“Once you start reading, be prepared, because you won’t want to stop as Lara chronicles how she went from surviving behind bars to becoming a best-selling ghostwriter and author, sharing her harrowing, sometimes hilarious, and often heartbreaking journey from her arrest and conviction to her release and ultimate reinvention,” Winfrey said in a statement Tuesday.

As she has done with previous club picks, Winfrey popped up during a video conference call between Hardin and her publisher, Simon & Schuster, and broke the news.

“I had to ask myself if this was real life or my overactive imagination,” Hardin said in a statement. “Her spotlight is humbling and validating and I know it will also shine a light on the shared story of all incarcerated women. Words are inadequate to convey what an incredible, fantastical, dream-fulfilling honor this is as an author, nor how much it means to me that this new plot twist to my story will become a part of the story my children someday tell to their children.”

Hardin has been cited by Winfrey before. She co-wrote, and was fully credited for the prison memoir “The Sun Does Shine,” by Anthony Ray Hinton, who spent nearly 30 years on death row in Alabama on a wrongful murder conviction. “The Sun Does Shine” was a Winfrey selection in 2018. “The Many Lives of Mama Love” is Winfrey’s 104th book choice since she started the club in 1996, her previous selections ranging from Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” to Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road.”

Tuesday’s announcement comes at a time of growing prominence for ghost writers, among them J.R. Moehringer, widely praised for his work on Prince Harry’s “Spare.” In January, the Gotham Ghostwriters and the American Society of Journalists and Authors co-presented the first-ever national conference of ghost writers, “Gathering of the Ghosts,” in New York City.

Lara Love Hardin's memoir 'The Many Lives of Mama Love' is Oprah Winfrey's new book club pick

An author and ghost writer’s life story, from prison and drug addiction to collaborating with the Dalai Lama and the Archbishop Desmond Tutu among others, is Oprah Winfrey’s latest book club selection

NEW YORK -- Oprah Winfrey’s latest book club selection is an author and ghost writer’s life story, chronicling her journey from prison and drug addiction to collaborating with the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and others.

Lara Love Hardin's “The Many Lives of Mama Love: A Memoir of Lying, Stealing, Writing, and Healing” was published last summer.

"I had to ask myself if this was real life or my overactive imagination,” Hardin said in a statement.
