Gametap Presents Space Ghost Coast to Coast Day Thread B

A few months ago, I watched the fan upload on the Internet Archive of ( all but 3, whoever saved them didn’t get “Larry”, “Mark” or “Bruce”, they’re considered lost ) the Gametap episodes of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. “Gametap” was Turner’s own PlayStation-exclusive streaming platform that only lasted about 4 years. 2006 was weird time.

space ghost coast to coast gametap

The episodes ranges from 2 to 6.5 minutes, and the interviews are mostly with video game notables. Some of SG’s usual musician guests show up in the back half of the series. The animation is even more cheap and repetitive than the Cartoon Network version. Lowe and crew all sound tired. It does have a few good jokes… And here are screenshots of All of them in case I don’t finish my writeup in time.

10 Best Episodes of ‘Space Ghost Coast to Coast’

On September 17th, famed [adult swim] voice actor and animator C. Martin Crocker passed away. Crocker was a major force in the surreal animated talk show Space Ghost Coast to Coast , which aired on TBS, TNT Cartoon Network, and Gametap from 1994-2008.

Crocker played the roles of Zorak and Moltar in Space Ghost Coast to Coast, serving as sidehosts to Space Ghost. To pay respect to Crocker’s legacy and his impact on Cartoon Network, [adult swim] is freely hosting their entire collection of Space Ghost Coast to Coast on their website. Looking back on the storied run of this oddball show, we collected ten of the best episodes. Whether the script is particularly zany, or the guest stars make a huge impression, these are some of the best of the best.

Check out the episode list below. Click on the link to the names of the episode to give them a watch!

Baffler Meal

Season 8, Episode 1 This episode is famous for being the first introduction of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Space Ghost sells the show out to a fast food restaurant named Burger Trench, but the restaurant’s mascots, the Aqua Teen Hunger Force, forcefully disrupt the show with their constant jabbering and outward promotion of the chain restaurant. The bun is in your mind!

Season 4, Episode 16 Guests: Colin Quinn, Pavement, Red Green, Goldie Hawn & Tommy Davidson This episode is absolutely jam-packed with guests, and Pavement only adds to the chaos. The band finds time to play bizarre noise-rock fits with lyrics consisting only of “Space Ghost” Space Ghost constantly mistakes Pavement for the Beatles for some bizarre reason. After interviewing all of the guests, Space Ghost saves the planet from a rogue dog named Fido. And who could forget the special cameo appearance of The Great Gazoo?

Season 4, Episode 18 Guests: Rob Zombie & Raven-Symoné Macho Man Randy Savage completely steals the show in this episode. He voices the grandfather of Space Ghost (who really is just Space Ghost with a white beard slapped onto his face). He periodically interrupts Space Ghost during his show, before taking over the reigns himself. Macho Man interviews a very young Raven-Symoné, asking her such questions about whether she has ever piledrived anyone at her school. The episode ends in an all-out wrestling brawl between the cast of the show before Grandpa Ghost leaves.

Chambraigne

Season 6. Episode 1 Guests: Bob Costas & Al Roker A brand new product has hit the store shelves – Chambraigne! This shampoo is an ‘intelihancer’ that grants users increased intelligence. The product is even endorsed by Al Roker. Space Ghost becomes a big fan of the product, but his stupidity begins to upset some living brains who created it. After the brains stomach watching through the talk show, they rush to Ghost Planet to try and stop Space Ghost from endorsing their fake product before his idiocy exposes their scam.

Kentucky Nightmare

Season 7. Episode 1 Guest: Willie Nelson Ghost Planet is bought out by a failing liquor store, who’s mascot is “Old Kentucky Shark”. Due to agreements with the liquor store owner, Old Kentucky Shark must be featured heavily throughout the talk show, and Space Ghost asks plenty of questions in regards to this liquor. Later on, a crazed bear shows up and throws the entire show into disarray. We also catch a few quick glimpses of Space Ghost’s documentary series about Sharks and Bears (Nature’s Best Friends). Later on, the studio is overrun by killer bees after the crew feels the need to ‘crack a window’.

Season 4, Episode 2 Bob Odenkirk and David Cross Mr. Show duo Bob Odenkirk and David Cross visit the show and Space Ghost introduces a brand new segment called “Space Time Quiz Fun 9000”. Space Ghost asks the guests a variety of questions, including what their super powers are. Turns out, David Cross’ super power is he can detect when people are in trouble from far away, but has no way of getting to them quickly. Bob’s super power is craving sweets. The Quiz Time segment results in a bunch of rapid fire questions, as a result, Bob Odenkirk becomes addicted to Space Ghost’s power band blasts.

Season 2, Episode 7 Guests: Hulk Hogan & Slash As Space Ghost, Moltar, and Zorak wait for the show to start, they spew some haikus before the opening credits. Hulk Hogan is the first guest, and Space Ghost is overly concerned whether he is getting enough oxygen. The two of them start debating on who’s the strongest person in the Turner organization – Ted Turner or Hulk Hogan. Later on, Zorak and Moltar improvise guitar solos with their mouths.

Jacksonville

Season 3, Episode 10 Guests: James Hetfield & Kirk Hammett (Metallica) The second part of a two-part story arc, Moltar is on the run and his role is filled in by the bumbling Tansit. Tansit’s inability to probably run the console leads to nonstop hijinks before the guest are introduced. The episode’s presentation is broken down into bizarre “acts” with no rhyme or reason. With two of them involving bizarre pregnancy’s that Space Ghost is shocked by. Space Ghost eventually grows tired of Tansit’s mistakes and fires him. As it turns out, Moltar is on a bus to Jacksonville.

Knifin’ Around

Season 7, Episode 3 Guests: Thom Yorke & Björk Featuring blockbuster musical guests Thom Yorke of Radiohead and Icelandic singer Bjork, Space Ghost starts things off on the wrong foot by attempting to burn 100 copies of the new Radiohead album. Zorak and Moltar discover that Space Ghost is actually married and Bjork is his wife. Bjork calls into the show several times, asking Space Ghost questions of no real importance, and Space Ghost does his best to come off as the most inconsiderate husband in the world. Despite all of this, they attempt to get married again at the end of the episode before Space Ghost pulls the plug on it.

Season 8, Episode 9 Guest: Conan O’Brien Perhaps the most surreal of all Space Ghost episodes is Fire Ant, which guest stars The Late Show-era Conan O’Brien. After the interview gets off to a rocky start, Space Ghost is bitten by a small aggressive fire ant. He does not take this transgression lightly and vows to follow the ant all the back home so he could destroy his family. What proceeds is an 11-minute long sequence of Space Ghost slowly flying behind the fire ant, mumbling and humming to himself. Nearly the entire episode consists of this drawn out slow chase, before ending in hilarious fashion (we won’t spoil it).

EP 8 Batmantis

EP 10 Gum, Disease

The rapport between Branford Marsalis and Space Ghost makes it look as though the then-band leader of "The Tonight Show"might be switching talk shows. Next, a child star from the same television era as Space Ghost, Danny Bonaduce, talks about his days with the Partridge family and his deep-seated hatred for Osmonds.

EP 1 President's Day Nightmare

Space Ghost shows off his versatility by emceeing Cartoon Network's "World Premiere Toon In". EP 4 Hungry

Space Ghost welcomes shiny happy Michael Stipe from R.E.M. (Space Ghost: "Is that you in the corner?"Stipe: "Yes, it is.") Later, he shares time-honored difficult-places-to-reach-while-scratching-stories with Lassie. Mujibur and Sirajul, frequent guest stars on "The Late Show with David Letterman,"mysteriously appear with Space Ghost's pizza.

EP 6 Sleeper

Feeling a little wired, Space Ghost asks professional wrestler Hulk Hogan to put him in a sleeper hold so that he can get some rest. Instead, Hogan recites an original haiku about Zorak. Slash from Guns 'N' Roses winds up the show with his usual gift for gab.

Space Ghost adds a few new twists: a live studio audience, a remarkably versatile applause sign and viewer call-in. The results fall flat and Space Ghost isn't happy. Palmer Mills and Sandra Bernhard come to agree Space Ghost is a jerk.

It's mating season on Zorak's home planet. Despite the role the male plays in the love ritual, Zorak gives in to the common of insect impulses and returns home. Space Ghost welcomes Catherine Bach and plays the blues with Matthew Sweet.

EP 1 Explode

Lokar, a villain from Space Ghost's original series, attempts to woo Moltar away from his helm as director. Oblivious, Space Ghost proceeds with his celebrity guests--Terry Jones and Glen Phillips--one of whom reveals his secret identity as Tongue Man.

EP 2 $20.01

This loose parody of Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" features Joel Hodgson, creator of "Mystery Science Theater 3000," and comedic magicians Penn and Teller. Moltar and Zorak are fired when Space Ghost replaces them with MOE 2000, an unfeeling computer director.

EP 3 Lovesick

Debuting on Valentine's Day, this episode finds Space Ghost heartbroken over a failed relationship. The despondent Ghost finds that not even the antics of comedian Carrot Top can lure him from his lovesick stupor.

EP 4 Transcript

Musician Jonathan Richman, who first climbed to fame fronting The Modern Lovers, favors Space Ghost with a couple of charming songs during a meandering conversation.

EP 7 Freak Show

Marshall "Duh" Staxx of the musical group Green Jelly and yodeller Wylie Gustafson are the freaks du jour in this aptly named episode. The show also features a video pirate who identifies himself only as "Commander Andy of the Cosmos."

EP 8 Switcheroo

Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin! Evil Twin!

EP 9 Surprise

After Moltar sends Space Ghost away to "pick up an important package in the mailroom," Zorak takes a seat behind the desk. What happens next is television history as Zorak cackles through a rapid-fire series of "interviews" with everyone from actress Cameron Diaz to TV's Jimmie "Good Times" Walker.

EP 11 Jacksonville

With Moltar on the run, Space Ghost is forced to recruit Tansut as his fill-in director, who causes problems before bringing out guests Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield of Metallica.

EP 12 Late Show

Former "Late Show With David Letterman" writers scripted this unabashed spoof of late-night talk show convention. Janeane Garofalo reveals her secret power, then hypnotist Flip Orley joins Space Ghost until Zorak, using an incantation, turns him into David Grohl of the Foo Fighters. Sitting in with the band is John Popper of Blues Traveler.

EP 13 Cookout

After a show open that features Moltar and Zorak arguing the respective merits of Beefaroni and Beefaghetti, Space Ghost enlists the Council of Doom to judge an old-fashioned cooking competition between three nationally-acclaimed culinary experts: Emeril Lagasse, Nathalie Dupree and Martin Yan.

EP 14 Art Show

Performance artist Laurie Anderson riles Space Ghost by revealing that she never watches television, then waxes conspiratorial about cyberspace. A disengaged Space Ghost invisos out, missing much of their remaining conversation. Next, Space Ghost endeavors to understand members of the performance troupe Stomp.

EP 15 Woody Allen's Fall Project

In an apparent tribute to E! Entertainment's well-publicized re-enactments of the O.J. Simpson hearings, viewers are treated to performances of selected "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" moments by the Ghost Planet Dinner Theater Ensemble of Doraville, GA.

EP 1 Rehearsal

This flashback episode transports viewers to a dress rehearsal two days before the premiere of "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" in April 1994. EP 2 Gallagher

Space Ghost introduces "Space Time Quiz Fun 9000" and his "contestants," comedians David Cross and Bob Odenkirk of HBO's "Mr. Show." What follows is a rapid-fire conversation in more ways than one, as Odenkirk's growing addiction to power-band blasts results in a steady volley from Space Ghost.

EP 3 Edelweiss

EP 5 Zoltran

EP 12 Boo Boo Kitty

Self-heralded "comedy ghetto" resident Michael McKean barely gets a word in with Space Ghost, and David Lander suffers a similar fate. The reason? Zorak and Space Ghost's roommate tiff spilling over into the show. In addition, a menacing "kitty" blimp hovers around Ghost Planet.

EP 13 Needledrop

EP 16 Untitled

EP 18 Piledriver

Grandpa Space Ghost, whose physique is identical to his grandson's and whose voice is identical to WCW wrestler "Macho Man" Randy Savage, gives an "OOOO-YEEAAAHHH!" performance despite being clubbed with a chair by Zorak. Grandpa Ghostal interviews kid actress Raven Symone.

EP 19 Suckup

Desperate for a new gig, Space Ghost kisses up to "Talk Soup" host John Henson and "Entertainment Tonight" host Bob Goen by telling each that they are "pretty men." Space Ghost even offers to set Henson up with his "sister" Judy. Brak spoils the affair by spilling gravy all over the set.

Space Ghost Coast to Coast welcomes its first-ever Academy Award winner, Charlton Heston, who, after much prodding, offers his trophy to Space Ghost.

EP 21 Boat Show

The deep space set comes alive like never before with 11 glorious musical numbers. Space Ghost, Zorak and Moltar are joined by Brak, who performs a melodic Man on the Street duet with the originator of the popular skit, Steve Allen.

Gametap: Space Ghost Coast to Coast

I love Space Ghost, so of course when the chance to do a couple of short webisodes for Turner’s Gametap platform came along, it was wildly exciting. In an effort to raise user adoption, Gametap began offering a selection of exclusive online programming aimed at gamers and leveraging classic Turner properties, including SGC2C. And that’s where we came in— writing scripts, working with the voice talent, and editing animations from Turner’s vast library of Space Ghost footage. We completed three episodes in total, this one featuring game designer Rob Fulop being my favorite.

Digital game Wayward Strand a Bass Coast airship adventure in multigenerational empathy

Marigold Bartlett at her computer

A new Australian digital game set on an airship that hovers above a mythical Bass Coast has been designed to help young players develop empathy, social skills and intergenerational relationships.

The immersive role-playing game is representative of a new generation of Australian digital games by diverse designers for diverse players.

Starring the voice talents of veteran film and TV luminaries Michael Caton and Anne Charleston and designed for PlayStation, XBox, Nintendo and PC, Wayward Strand was nominated for five Freeplay Independent Games Festival Awards this week, taking out the award for Best Narrative.

"It's a really modern style of video game design, which is sort of 'story first' rather than any complicated controls," art director Marigold Bartlett said.

"It's a new way of interactive storytelling dealing with ensemble casts.

"We worked really hard to make it as accessible as possible to people who might not have played [digital] games before."

Produced by Melbourne-based studio Ghost Pattern, with a core team of seven working on the project for seven years, the game was financed with help from Film Victoria's Digital Games fund.

Featuring recognisable vistas of Victoria's spectacular Bass Coast in its animated backdrops, the game was also made in consultation with the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation.

"It's just a heartfelt, poetic little piece," Ms Bartlett said.

"In a way it's a love letter to the Bass Coast and to Australia, built through stories that have been taught to us through our grandparents and our parents."

The getting of empathy

Set in 1978, the game invites players to take on the role of 14-year-old avatar Casey Beaumaris who, while on school holidays, has accompanied her mother to work on an airborne hospital ship which floats above the Bass Coast.

Casey's mother, who is the head nurse of the aged care facility, tasks Casey with making conversations and forming relationships with the elderly residents.

Within the world of Wayward Strand, the stories of over a dozen eclectic characters unfold around Casey in real time.

While she roams freely about the Zeppelin-styled airship, Casey chooses which staff and residents she wants to interact with.

She learns about the lives of the characters, who each have their own desires, goals and imaginations, while moving at their own pace, in their own simultaneous timeline.

"All of the characters on board the ship are walking around to their own schedules," Ms Bartlett said.

"So if you are on the third deck having a conversation with a particular patient, there is going to be stuff happening on the other decks that you are missing.

"You get a unique version of the story depending on where you are at any given time during your play through."

Some of the characters are charming, some eccentric and some are rude, sharing news with each other, arguing, joking, gossiping and chatting with Casey as she approaches them.

With the aim of writing an article about her adventures for the school newspaper, Casey keeps track of events and information in her notebook.

She unlocks new backstories, details, locations, revelations and resolutions, while making new discoveries and piecing together mysteries.

"One of the core themes is the getting of empathy, so you're having all these intergenerational relationships," Ms Bartlett said.

"We were hoping when we designed this to have a game that could be played between grandparents and grandchildren, that might incite conversation about intergenerational care."

Games for everyone

Since the first computer games were developed in the 1950s, digital game play has expanded to encompass a broad definition of interactive user experiences, including the development of social connections.

Once belittled as the domain of bored dexterous teenage boys seeking target practice, digital games now span everything from puzzles, to educational training exercises, to immersive multiplayer worlds and virtual AI realities, which place the player at the centre of an unfolding narrative scenario.

Jennifer Lade, a senior lecturer in game design at RMIT since 2005, said there has been a cultural shift in game design, with more collaborative, diverse teams catering to all ages and demographics — such as young children and seniors.

"Melbourne has developed an international reputation for producing independent, or 'indie', games that have been developed by small teams and reached global audiences," she said, citing Untitled Goose Game, the Frog Detective series and Heavenly Bodies as examples.

"Indie games are typically more experimental in their approach to the stories they tell and reflect contemporary culture and the diversity of those who make and play games."

Dr Lade said such games can provide a great bridge between generations, creating a common interest and helping to develop technical proficiency.

"In selecting games to share, consideration can be given to how long it takes to complete the game, the complexity of the rules and the player skills that are required," she said.

Women designers time to shine

Dr Lade said women were bringing new perspectives to all areas of game development including programming and character design, as female audiences continued to expand across the globe.

"From the hyper-sexualised characters such as the early days of Lara Croft we can now play as the annoying goose in the Untitled Goose game, or the quirky inhabitants of the aged care airship in Wayward Strand," she said.

Art director Marigold Bartlett said the multi-linear narrative style of Wayward Strand was influenced by the interactive theatre piece Sleep No More, the late 1990s adventure game The Last Express, and the graphic novel Building Stories, by Chris Ware.

Ms Bartlett, who has a passion for drawing, cartoons and visual art, said she was introduced to gaming from a young age by her three older brothers.

Being raised on computers naturally led her to exploring digital art, and eventually studying game design at RMIT University in 2012.

"Turns out that game design is a really interesting field with a lot of opportunity to express your creativity," she said.

Having designed the game's cartoon aesthetic, Ms Bartlett insisted that every frame in Wayward Strand be crafted with the intricate detail of an illustrated children's book.

"There's not a lot of women in this industry. We're under 20 per cent of the industry in Australia, but it's growing," she said, noting Wayward Strand's development team was comprised of over 50 per cent women.

With the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade predicting that the global digital games industry will be worth $294 billion in 2024, Ms Bartlett believes an exciting era lies ahead for game development in Australia.

"I'm hoping that Wayward Strand and all of the other amazing Australian indie games that are being made at the moment are going to provide a bit of a doorway for people who might not have previously been into games, to come in," she said.
