Im Jahr 2018 startete die „A Pale Tour Named Death“-Tour in der historischen Royal Albert Hall in London. Die lang erwartete Rückkehr in diesem Jahr führte Ghost erneut nach Großbritannien und Europa, wo sie ihr dunkles Theater auch in fünf deutschen Arenen aufführten. theartsdesk in Hamburg: Ghost Light - a ballet in the time of corona | reviews, news & interviews

Theartsdesk in hamburg: ghost light - a ballet in the time of corona, how the city is showing the world a way through the live-performance impasse.

ghost live hamburg

So the Royal Ballet is to make a live comeback, for one night only, on 9 October. Fielding the entire company of 100 dancers, suitably distanced, the enterprise is being hailed as a triumph of logistics. And so it is. But the fact remains that the vast majority of its audience will be watching on a computer screen at home. And the gala programme will be pulled from the company’s back catalogue, health precautions having apparently ruled out the possibility of making anything new since March.

Madoka Sugai and Nicolas Gläsmann in 'Ghost Light'

“During lockdown, it was the silence, more than anything, that was the most frightening,” Dr Carsten Brosda, Hamburg’s Culture Minister, told me. “In a time of crisis the arts become more, not less important – not just to entertain, but to provide stimulation and challenge.” What wouldn’t we give for a British politician to express that thought, let alone build policy on it?

I was both challenged and charmed by the late-night gig I picked at random, staged in the Resonanzraum, part of an otherwise derelict concrete block known as The Bunker. Berlin-based indie band Albertine Sarges and the Sticky Fingers create luscious, part spoken-word soundscapes whose laxity is held in place by startlingly precise vocal harmonising from all four band members, one of whom doubles on jazz flute. Sarges’ librarian chic – thick spectacles teamed with red polyester – casts a smokescreen over some fairly explicit same-sex love poetry. And just as subversive are her inducements to skip work and go naked for a day. Yet so delicious is Sarges’ voice that the strains of anarchy come smothered in whipped cream.

meta diary sketch by Maximilian Voormann

Should have guessed. This was Maximilian Voormann, graphic artist son of graphic artist Klaus Voormann, friend, bassist and lifelong collaborator with the Fab Four since their Hamburg days. It turned out young Maxi was the Reeperbahn Festival’s resident diarist, there to capture his impressions and upload his analogue sketches (pictured above) to Instagram. He wasn’t just focusing on the artists with his felt-tip, but on the event as a whole: the venues, the punters, the vibe. The Reeperbahn Festival’s visitor numbers may have dropped from 15,000 to 3,000 last weekend, but a vibe there certainly was.

The sheer breadth of Hamburg's music scene was made manifest over the next 24 hours. On the micro scale, there was a two-hour Beatles Tour with funny, spunky Steffi Hempel, who adds variety to her anecdote-rich trawl of the low dives frequented by the band in the early Sixties by whipping out a ukelele and belting out some of their early hits. On the macro scale, there was a visit to the gleaming new concert hall complex, the Elbphilharmonie (pictured below) , built atop old tobacco warehouses on the docks. Almost needless to say in the context of this article, the latter has just returned to an almost-full schedule of classical concerts.

north side of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg

But none of this explains how, given the restrictions on bodily contact, Hamburg Ballet managed to conjure a new, full-evening’s dancework under lockdown. The push came from John Neumeier, the company’s artistic director and choreographer-in-chief for the past 47 years (you’d not be wrong to say the man is wedded to his job). Determined to do something for his dancers, distraught at seeing half the season cancelled, way back in April Neumeier devised a way of working that exploited the fact that a fair number in the company were established couples who lived together, and thus could legitimately rehearse and perform pas de deux with full contact. The rest he organised into working bubbles of six to 10 dancers, and thus, following a strict timetable so that the groups didn’t have to meet, he built up the two-hour work in tiny fragments.

The result, Ghost Light – A Ballet in the Time of Corona , may be a composite yet its overarching theme is clear. It's about how the dancers of Hamburg Ballet dealt with the body-blow to their working practice, the apparent end to all their dreams, about their desperate longing to perform and their nostalgia for their working lives pre-Covid. A feature that recurs through the two-hour work is a gesture of reaching and enfolding, reaching and enfolding, the arms closing on nothing at all.

Touching but not touching: dancers in 'Ghost Light'

There are also, praise be, luscious eyefuls of partnering. You cannot know till you experience it the delicious shock of seeing live, unfettered body contact after six months without. And we’re not only talking male-female couples. The most dramatic choreography in Ghost Light bursts forth in a highly tactile duet for two men, David Rodriguez and Matias Oberlin (main picture) .

The ballet’s title is worth explaining. On Broadway, according to John Neumeier, when a theatre goes dark, superstition decrees that a lamp be left lighted, centre stage, until such time as theatrical activity resumes. Neumeier's offering, this ballet, danced on a stage that’s empty but for a lamp on a stand, carries his hopes for a permanent return to normality.

Her real-life fairy-tale love story brought her to Hamburg in the summer of 2014 to marry her Hamburger sweetheart after 5 years of being apart. Just weeks after finishing at Saint Louis University with a Bachelor Degree in English Language and Literature, and a Minor in German Studies, Jenny packed up two suitcases (and her two cats) and quickly made Hamburg her new hometown. During the day, Jenny is a stay at home mom to her two boys, but at night, she runs these dark history tours. Her passion for the city of Hamburg is something that she is excited to share with everyone on her tours. URMEL , her adorable corgi puppy, also loves to accompany her on the tours!

If you are interested in private history tours of the City of Hamburg with any of our guides, your party is larger than 10 people, or you have any other questions or concerns, please email us and we will be in contact with you shortly. We hope to see you soon!

Ghost Light by John Neumeier, music by Schubert

Hamburg Ballet

John Neumeier — Choreographer, costume designer, stage design, lighting designer

Jürgen Rose — Costumes

The Hamburg Ballet

David Fray — Pianist

Program notes

“[ Ghost Light ] is like the separate instrumental lines of a symphony—or a traditional Japanese meal: a sequence of carefully arranged, hopefully ‘delicious’ miniatures. How the separate parts will unite to create a complete work, will depend on the moment we are allowed to come near and touch each other again.” —John Neumeier

A “ghost light”—a single lamp that illuminates the stage when rehearsals or performances are finished—is part of a long theatrical tradition. Legend says that originally, the night light was illuminated to allow the ghosts of former artists to cavort throughout the night without disrupting current performances! At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, countless stages found themselves illuminated by such ghost lights, awaiting the return of music and dance.

The Hamburg Ballet was one of the first ballet companies internationally to return to its studios after the first lockdown. Observing a strict hygiene concept, the great John Neumeier created Ghost Light , a new full-length ballet, for his entire ensemble of 55 dancers. A most welcome “return to pure dance” ( Bachtrack ), the work deals with isolation and the feelings and fantasies evoked by an empty stage. Developed in fragments using small groups of dancers (including real-life couples) and under the constraints imposed by COVID-19, Neumeier’s choreography reflects situations, fears, relationships, memories and emotions experienced during the pandemic. The gorgeous solo piano music is performed by star pianist David Fray, whose exceptional recordings of works by Schubert inspired the choreographer.

This is just one of many beautiful  ballets  available on  medici.tv , the web's leading  classical music streaming platform !

Ghost are, regardless of whether you're particularly into corpse painted, Satanic-inspired heavy metal, one band that you should not miss live. Their concerts are not simply events to watch but experiential, jaw-dropping journeys to embark upon, and here's why: The Swedish sextet, clad in black hooded gowns and pointed beard-masks (yes, this is a thing) are led by their singer, known as Papa Emeritus, who dons full skull make-up and the robes and hat of a Roman Catholic pope (aside from the upside-down crosses adorning them). As well as their appearances, the band add to the intoxicating atmosphere of their shows with a backdrop of faux stained glass windows, and burn incense to give the audience the impression of being in a church, about to undergo something more than simply watching a group of men play musical instruments on a stage. They achieve this by including the audience in their twisted act, for example during the song Body and Blood, scantily-clad women appeared at the front of the stage offering the 'Eucharist' of a goblet of blood (aka wine) to the lucky fans in the front row.

I saw Ghost at the Fillmore Silver Spring, shorty after the release of their highly anticipated second album, Infestissumam, and was, frankly, blown away by the quality of their live show. Their appearances and Satan-worshipping act are contrasted by the liveliness of their music, which while categorized as heavy or black metal, is definitely more riff and vocal-driven than most metal, with songs such as the single Monstrance Clock and even an amped-up cover of the Beatles' Here Comes The Sun as part of their catchy, dancable set.

Even if you are the biggest metal-phobe around, you should go see Ghost. If heavy metal is your jam, but you're really not into the whole make-up/ crazy outfit thing, you should go see Ghost. If you're a fan or the music but are undecided on paying for a ticket, you should most definitely go see Ghost. The entire experience is something intoxicatingly unforgettable, and you will not regret it!

The wife and I got into the game a bit late but Ghost is as much a part of our yearly plans as is eating, sleeping, and hydrating. We were fortunate to have caught their last two rituals in Sweden last year and were able to capture video of Papa III being pulled off stage during Monstrance Clock. We were so happy that we made the trip from the states because seeing the end of Papa III in videos is nothing compared to the excitement of seeing it in person, from the barrier, and right up front. This band is very exciting to watch and being able to share the experience with my wife has made our evenings with Ghost that much better. My wife met Papa III last year and we've had the opportunity to meet Cardinal Copia 3 times this year during the meet and greets in New York and Pittsburgh. We're looking forward to meeting him again 4 more times out of the 6 rituals we'll be attending in December. We also already have our tickets and vacation planned for the 2 upcoming rituals taking place in Sweden in February 2019. When they make their way back to the states in 2019, we will begin planning our schedules around their tour dates. Here's a short back story as to why they are so important to me. My wife and I were just a couple of months away from signing the official court documents stating we were divorced. While trying to keep things amicable we would meet to discuss things and we'd often listen to Ghost. By the time they would be coming Philadelphia that year, we would have been attending as two single individuals and no longer married. We'd have fun listening to them and as that common ground grew stronger, so did we and slowly began reconciling. By the time they did come to Philadelphia that year, we attended as a happily married couple and continue to do so today. Getting my wife back, I can honestly say, is all thanks to Ghost and I couldn't be more grateful to them or happier sharing the experience with anyone else except for Kelly.

The concert at Liseberg amusement Park was amazing. They opened doors at 11:00 am and there was already like 30 people waiting for the concert impatiently. Security guards and workers of the Amusement Park were very nice and help people when there was an incident outside the park.

The concert started at 8:00 pm without any problem, the crowd went crazy when they went on stage. The setlist was the following:

- Square Hammer

- From the Pinnacle to the Pit

- Elizabeth

- Con clavi con Dio

- Per aspera ad Inferi

- Body and Blood

- Devil Church

- Year Zero

- Spokosonat

- Absolution

- Deus in Absentia

- Monstrance Clock.

At the end of the last show was when 2 bodyguards came on stage and dragged Papa Emeritus III from stage and Papa Emeritus Zero came in, anouncing that the party was over and a new era was about to start.

I only got into Ghost recently and caught their show last night in Toronto.

I decided to get some cheap tickets because I liked the music and thought they'd be fun to see live.

They by far exceeded anything I was expecting. The creepy church vibe, use of incense(which I have never encountered before, very nice touch!), Papa engaging the audience at every opportunity and even took a few minutes just to chit chat and kept us roaring and laughing for more. The use of costumes and masks was amazing.

Being an introvert I don't really go out much, and when I do I just kind of sit there and enjoy the music and the show. This is the first band that's made me get up from my chair and actually get into the show. Next time they come to the area, I'm definitely saving up and treating myself to WAY better seating!

Oh my Ghost, this is the live ritual gig experience your soul is crying out for. Full disclaimer: I love Ghost to bits and have been preaching my dark passion for years. Seeing them live again - this time in a bigger arena off the back of a couple more hit albums - reaffirms the faith.

Go and see Ghost and you will get a diverse setlist drawn from the band's spectacular back catalogue. You will get theatrics and pyrotechnics. You will get both humour and deep emotion, dark anthems and sublime instrumentals and an uplifting sense that you a witnessing something novel and special.

Ghost are - musically, aesthetically, spiritually - something to cherish and the live experience is one that is fun, compelling, cathartic and oh-so-damn-rock-n-roll. Go worship and have the time of your (after)life.

I can see Ghost every night and never get bored. It's not just the band and music, Tobias has created characters, including his own, for this band that are incredibly humble and patient with their fans. While the material can be considered risque, you will see children younger than 10 years old attending that are not only having the time of their lives, but participating in the meet and greets with their parents. Everything about these shows from the music, to the costumes, the characters, and the theatrics is so very much entertaining. We know as fans that there is so much more to look forward to with the future of Ghost and we'll have the opportunity to enjoy them for many more years. It is very exciting when tomorrow becomes today and you're standing in front eagerly awaiting Ashes to start.

If you have Ghost, you have everything.

Theatre; spectacle; a sense of cult worship; dark humour; thick fugs of incense; electric, otherwordly energy; lighting and atmospherics; collective frenzy; and most of all, the sweet music of the night.

Ghost are beautiful for so many reasons. Beneath their sublime subversive style - iconoclastic and gleefully irreverent - is a musical powerhouse making the most compelling and catchy rock in this epoch. The craftsmanship is incredible. The mystique is immense. It's a joy to behold in the flesh (and blood) and if you have the opportunity to absorb the spirit of Ghost in person, surrender to it.

Honestly, Ghost was one of the greatest entertainment experiences I've had. Join them in their ritual and hail your Master...

This was the best show I have ever been to (I have seen a lot too). Ghost put on an electric performance with great theatrics as well as fun conversational bits while the musicians took a couple minutes to get water, wipe the sweat off from under those masks, etc. We were also delighted by the pyrotechnics, fog machines, and surprise mummy dust confetti! Well executed and the band sounded amazing live. I wish I had gotten tickets for the following night too! I will definitely be seeing them when they come back into town. Ghost really knows how to stimulate all their fans' senses. Many thanks to the band for their commitment to their fans and the melodic tunes they share with us. Keep them coming please!!!

The Ghost show was truly amazing. For me, this was mainly due to two things:

1. Each and every member of this band knows his instrument very well, and they play their songs flawlessly and with ease. Leaving them energy to interact with the crowd while still not missing a note/beat.

2. Their concept is so well thought through. From the incense and small unveiling ritual before their set starts to the sisters of sin and perfected visual in set, movements and costumes, everything works brilliantly. And with Papa giving some background info to songs and rituals, you really get the feeling you are part of a well-oiled ritual.

I am very glad I've been to the show, and can't wait to see this band again :)

Awesome band! I had a older friend come with last night to the Stockholm show and even thou she said "It's not exactly my favourite but it was a terrific show, tunes to sing along to and this isn't the last time we do this!" with a huge smile on her face. This was my second Ritual, i love the costume changes, you really feel like your seeing a theatrical show instead of a regular concert, I'm use to sitting up front but this time sat in the balcony to see a spectacular light show and pyrotechnics, we sat in the upper balcony and could feel the heat from the pyro effects.I only wish i could have been yp front closer to Cardinal Copia,to get his blessings. Will not be the last time i go to see Ghost!

15 haunted places in central Pa. where ghosts can be found (supposedly)

From the Gettysburg Battlefield to the old Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital, here are 15 places rumored to be haunted (and thus favorites of ghost hunters) in the Harrisburg, Lancaster, York and Gettysburg area.

As a word of caution, many of these are private property. Be sure to check with a location before you show up and try to hunt down a ghost.

Oyster Mill Playhouse

Kathie Spacht was sitting in the end seat at the top row of Oyster Mill Playhouse when she felt something tap her head. She thought nothing of it, but later she felt a tap again — harder. A few minutes later, her head was tapped so hard she got up and moved. No one was around her. Down a few rows, Dave Rowland was laughing. He knew exactly what had happened. she had sat in a seat that was not her own.

It was a ghost’s.

The building that plays home to the playhouse was originally a farmhouse, and the ghosts of one of the couples who lived there has stayed around. They enjoy watching performances and have their own seats — the left and right end seats in the top row. When it is occupied during rehearsal or auditions, the ghosts will sometimes do their best to politely get the occupant to leave, thus the tapping.

Rowland and Spacht are active in the theater scene at Oyster Mill in addition to being members of the ghost hunters group PA Paranormal. According to them, the playhouse is haunted by five spirits: The farmhouse couple, a little girl who loves to play in the costume racks upstairs, an angry mill worker (who presumably died in a fire) and a mystery man.

The majority of the theater’s ghosts are curious and regularly poke in to check out the latest productions. For example, during a performance of “Lucky Stiff,” the theater’s sound booth door (a hulking metal contraption) began to open on its own. After, it opened a bit it and shut again. It was not the first time this had happened.

Spacht also saw the little girl in the upstairs of the theater and describes her as having a long blue dress and blonde hair with a bow in it. When the girl saw Spacht, she ran and vanished.

Sachs Covered Bridge

Waterworks Road, Gettysburg

Sachs Covered Bridge is one of the most haunted spots in Gettysburg according to all of our sources (Gettysburg Ghost Tours, After Dark Investigations, Haunted Gettysburg Ghost Tours, Ghostly Images of Gettysburg and Mark Nesbitt's Ghosts of Gettysburg Candlelight Walking Tours). This area, however, is not accessible after dark unless on a tour. Soldiers have been spotted there and there are numerous photos of mists and orbs taken there.

This slide has been adapted from a 2013 article.

Frankeburger Tavern

217 E. Main St., Mechanicsburg

One of the oldest buildings still standing in Mechanicsburg, the 1801 tavern has seen a lot through the years, including a murder. The story goes that a cattle drover decided to enjoy a drink or two at the tavern after selling his cattle for $300 cash. The drover began to brag and attracted the attention of at least one nefarious person; he was robbed and killed that night.

But his spirit lives on, at least according to the stories told to Steven Zimmerman, director of the Mechanicsburg Museum Association. The cattle drover's face is said to appear in the upstairs window of the tavern. Screams have been heard coming from the upper floor, terrifying those nearby.

The woman who lived in the tavern before it was taken over by the museum believes that the place is haunted, Zimmerman said. "She says when she was a girl growing up there, they would put things in one place at night and in the morning they would be someplace else," he said.

"She swears there is definitely a ghost in there." It's an assertion the Harrisburg Area Paranormal Society agrees with. When the group investigated the tavern, one of the members was touched by a spirit, and the sound of objects moving and banging was heard, even though no one else was there.

They also caught recordings of a voice saying "I did it."

Perhaps the ghost of the tavern is not the cattle drover after all, but his murderer.

Devil's Den

Gettysburg National Military Park.

Devil's Den on the Gettysburg battlefield is incredibly haunted, with one particular Texan soldier ghost being seen as recently as 2010 according to Mark Nesbitt of Mark Nesbitt's Ghost of Gettysburg Candelight Walking Tours. More than 2,500 soldiers were killed in the fighting in and around Devil's Den.

Rehmeyer's Hollow

"THREE KILL MAN AS WITCH" read the front-page headline of the Harrisburg Telegraph on Nov. 30, 1928.

It was a story that was frontpage of the Harrisburg Telegraph and The Patriot for weeks, having captivated the midstate. Powwow doctor Nelson Rehmeyer had been brutally murdered in his home in Stewartstown by three men who claimed Rehmeyer had put a hex on them. The murderers had set a fire around his body, hoping to burn the house down and all the evidence of their crime with it. But the fire never spread and days later the body was discovered. Confessions poured forth shortly after.

While those responsible were brought to justice, it is believed that the witch doctor's house and the area around it, known by many as Hex Hollow, are haunted.

As a note for ghost hunters: Rehmeyer's Hollow is private property and not open to the public.

Hessian Powder Magazine

Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle

Built in 1777, allegedly on the backs of captured Hessian soldiers, the Hessian Powder Magazine is a stone building whose builders have never quite left - at least according to Mark Nesbitt, writer of "The Ghosts of Gettysburg" series, who says at least one soldier has been seen haunting the museum. Nesbitt isn't the only author who claims the museum is haunted.

Allen Campbell, author of "Ghosts at Carlisle Barracks Army War College," has had multiple haunting experiences. At night, long after the museum has been locked up, he said sounds of moans, groans and clanging can be heard emanating from the building.

There's one tale that does set hairs on end. The way Campbell tells it, a new resident at the barracks heard the sounds coming from the magazine late at night. The doors are normally locked, but when the resident investigated, the first door was unlocked - so he went in.

The second door was shut tight. Peering in through a window at the door, the resident fell down in shock at what he saw. It wasn't the 1990s museum he was looking into, but the late 1700s Hessian Powder Magazine, Hessians and all.

Harrisburg State Hospital

On a hill just behind Cameron Street in Harrisburg lies the grounds of the 1851 Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital, the first public asylum in the state. The hospital, commonly referred to as the "City on the Hill," was active until it was shut down in 2006. By then it was simply the Harrisburg State Hospital. Today, several of its buildings lie abandoned, with others used by state agencies.

Reports have emerged of mysterious noises, shadowy figures and moving objects. Two areas in particular are said to be especially haunted: The morgue and the network of tunnels that lies underneath the hospital complex. When the Harrisburg Area Paranormal Society investigated the complex, they caught a photo of a shadowy figure.

When the old Discovery Channel show "Ghost Lab" investigated the hospital in May 2010, they came out with several electronic voice phenomena, including a voice that appeared to say the names "Peter" and "Annie." The crew also captured a voice saying the full name of a woman who had worked at the hospital. For those curious about investigating the hospital, be warned that permission is required to enter the grounds and explore the buildings.

How haunted is this buildling? Enough that it will be the subject of the Nov. 4 episode of "Ghost Hunters" on SyFy.

Built in 1846, the courthouse sports a damaged column -- the remnants of an artillery attack from the Civil War.

A woman who works in the building told PennLive about her haunted experiences there. She had arrived at 5 a.m. for work, earlier than usual.

"I had my door open. I was the only one in the building – it was winter, and dark outside – when all of a sudden, all the doors in the hallway started opening and slamming,"  she told reporter Marijon Shearer.

The woman immediately fled to find a security guard. But when they returned there was no one in the building.

"Needless to say, I don't work in here alone anymore," she said.

Two sibling spirits, Pete and Melody, are said to frequent the restaurant. Melody, who likes sparkly objects, has been known to play with women’s earrings while they eat at the bar.

John Weaver, co-founder of Spirit Society of Pennsylvania, investigated the restaurant in 2007. According to him, the restaurant’s building used to be home to a family of undertakers. The funeral parlor was on one side of the building with the residence on the other. The Spirit Society has hosted a few haunted dinners at the restaurant, back when it was called Pete’s Cafe.

Gettysburg College

300 N Washington St., Gettysburg.

Gettysburg College   is loaded with ghost stories, according to Mark Nesbitt of Ghosts of Gettysburg Candlelight Walking Tours. Many of the stories of his book series, "Ghosts of Gettysburg," take place at the school - from soldier sightings to people stepping back in time.

One tale takes place in the Pennsylvania Hall (or the old dorm) on campus, which was built in 1837. It was used as a hospital during the Battle of Gettysburg. In present-day, two administrators were in an elevator in the hall. Instead of taking the administrators to the floor they wanted to go to, the elevator went to the basement. When the doors opened, they were no longer in modern-day Gettysburg... but in the Civil War.

They watched as Civil War doctors hacked off limbs of those injured. They didn't close the elevator doors and flee, however, until one of the doctors approached them. That's when they fled and sought a security guard. When they returned with the guard, the basement was empty.

Special counsel: No charges for Biden in classified documents probe

Report cites weak evidence of intent by biden, ‘an elderly man with a poor memory’.

Joe Biden carelessly kept classified documents and notebooks at his home, according to a special counsel report released Thursday that said the evidence wasn’t strong enough to charge the president with crimes. The report’s description of Biden as “an elderly man with a poor memory” prompted a furious response from the president at a hastily called news conference hours later.

The 345-page special counsel report portrays Biden, 81, as someone who haphazardly kept notebooks and documents with classified information at his home, and struggled to recall key dates in his life. Republicans quickly seized on that stinging characterization to attack the Democratic incumbent as unfit for office.

Special counsel Robert K. Hur’s report also said Biden could not remember the year in which his son Beau died of cancer.

“How in the hell dare he raise that,” a furious president said to reporters summoned to the White House on Thursday evening. “It wasn’t any of their damn business. … I don’t need anyone to remind me when he passed away.”

In an exchange with reporters that veered from questions about possible national security crimes to the president’s mental faculties to the ongoing U.S. response to the war in the Middle East, Biden insisted he never improperly shared classified information with anyone and was fit to be president and run for reelection.

“I know what the hell I’m doing,” he declared.

Hur, who interviewed the president at the White House himself, found evidence that Biden “willfully retained and disclosed classified materials to his ghost writer after his vice presidency when he was a private citizen.” The special counsel concluded, however, that the evidence “does not establish Mr. Biden’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.” At the news conference, Biden denied disclosing restricted information, saying he was careful to skip over any sensitive material when sharing his notes.

Prosecuting Biden would be “unwarranted” based on a number of factors that would make it difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he intended to break the law, Hur’s report concluded.

Among the issues examined by investigators was why Biden first told his ghostwriter that he had classified information in his possession back in 2017 but didn’t report it to authorities.

Ultimately, the report said a jury would find Biden to be a sympathetic figure and “a well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” Prosecutors also suggested it might not have struck Biden as noteworthy that he was in possession of classified documents so soon after his term as vice president had ended.

Hur’s report said it would be “difficult to convince a jury that they should convict him — by then a former president well into his eighties — of a serious felony that requires a mental state of willfulness.”

Hur’s team wrote Biden’s case was far different from that of former president Donald Trump , who is being prosecuted for retaining classified documents — including that Biden promptly returned the documents when asked, while Trump declined multiple opportunities to do so.

Read the full special counsel report on President Biden's possession of classified documents

Richard Sauber, a lawyer for Biden on the documents case, said he was pleased the investigation has ended without charges, emphasizing in a statement that the president “fully cooperated from day one.” Sauber said every administration ends with packing mistakes involving documents, and Biden’s was no different.

Sauber went on, however, to criticize Hur for “a number of inaccurate and inappropriate comments” in the report. “Nonetheless, the most important decision the Special Counsel made — that no charges are warranted — is firmly based on the facts and evidence,” he said.

In a response included in the report, Sauber said, “The report uses highly prejudicial language to describe a commonplace occurrence among witnesses: a lack of recall of years-old events.”

The special counsel team conducted 173 interviews with 147 witnesses, including Biden, and collected millions of documents to compile the report. They said Biden cooperated with investigators and consented to multiple searches of his properties.

The Justice Department has long had a policy that sitting presidents cannot be accused, charged or prosecuted for an alleged crime. But officials said in the report that they would have still decided not to pursue charges even if department policy permitted charging a sitting president.

Hur also revealed in his report that he considered filing criminal charges against Biden’s ghostwriter after learning that he had deleted audio recordings of his talks with Biden during the writing of the memoir.

“The recordings had significant evidentiary value,” the report said. The ghostwriter later told the FBI what he’d done, turned over his computer and hard drive, and consented to their search, during which FBI agents were able to recover all the deleted files, though some portions were missing. Separately, the ghostwriter kept his near-verbatim transcripts of the conversations and turned them over to investigators, the report said. Ultimately, prosecutors decided the evidence of obstruction would not probably lead to a conviction.

The detailed report contained photos of notes Biden took during his time as vice president, showing that he organized his notecards into binders so that he could take them with him after he left office. One binder, for example, had notes on classified meetings and information that Biden took during his daily briefings and lunches with President Barack Obama.

The findings suggest that his aides knew his note-taking methods could be a problem and discussed how he should properly store the materials. The special counsel investigation did not determine what Biden’s staffers advised him to do with the materials. But the report also noted that Biden was an official steeped with knowledge of how classified materials should be stored. They said he was aware that past presidents and vice-presidents kept personal diaries and notes of their time in office — and he believed that his notes could be kept in his home.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Hur — a former Trump-appointed U.S. attorney for Maryland — as special counsel in January 2023 after Biden’s aides said they discovered the materials when they searched his home and office.

At the time, a separate special counsel investigation was underway into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents — a probe that led to 40 federal criminal counts against the former president , including willful retention of national defense secrets and obstruction of justice. Garland has said the special counsel appointments were necessary because both Trump and Biden had indicated that they would be running for president in 2024.

Hur’s report includes a discussion of the Trump prosecution, arguing that there are striking differences between the Trump and Biden cases. Among them: Trump allegedly thwarted officials’ attempts to retrieve the government materials on multiple occasions.

“Unlike the evidence involving Mr. Biden, the allegations set forth in the indictment of Mr. Trump, if proven, would present serious aggravating factors,” the report continues. Most notable among those: “after being given multiple chances to return classified documents and avoid prosecution, Mr. Trump allegedly did the opposite.”

The Republican front-runner for the GOP nomination in 2024, Trump said the decision not to charge Biden was evidence of a two-tiered justice system, subjecting him to worse treatment than his Democratic rivals.

“I did nothing wrong, and I cooperated far more,” Trump claimed. He also repeated his frequent complaint that the Justice Department is engaging in election interference against him by pursuing criminal charges against him even as he runs for office.

Hur’s report portrayed Biden as well-intentioned but sometimes hapless and forgetful, a man who had access to classified materials throughout his decades in government. The special counsel noted that Biden’s 2017 memoir ultimately did not contain classified information.

Prosecutors said that in their interviews with the president, Biden sometimes struggled to recall basic facts about his career and his life — a description that goes to the heart of what polls have showed is his most significant political liability, a sense by voters that he is too old for his office.

“He did not remember when he was vice president, forgetting on the first day of the interview when his term ended (‘if it was 2013 — when did I stop being Vice President?’), and forgetting on the second day of the interview when his term began (‘in 2009, am I still Vice President?’),” the report said.

The report recounted that Biden did not remember “even within several years” when his son Beau died. It also said his memory appeared “hazy” in recounting even the debate over Afghanistan that “was once so important to him.” Biden noted that he agreed to be interviewed for hours in early October, even as he was dealing with the international crisis sparked by Hamas’s attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

Other details in the report could add to the portrait of an aging, absent-minded president. Jurors, Hur wrote, could be “struck by the place where the Afghanistan documents were ultimately found in Mr. Biden’s Delaware home: in a badly damaged box in the garage, near a collapsed dog crate, a dog bed, a Zappos box, an empty bucket, a broken lamp wrapped with duct tape, potting soil, and synthetic firewood.”

In an early sign of how Republicans are likely to use the report against Biden, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said the report demonstrated that Biden has “mental decline” that is “both sad and alarming.”

“Putting a ‘sympathetic,’ ‘elderly’ man who can’t remember major events from his own life back in the Oval Office would undoubtedly make America less safe,” she said.

Prosecutors concluded that Biden saved some of the classified material because he believed he was an important figure in U.S. history and wanted that history to reflect that he opposed sending more troops to Afghanistan in 2009. Biden, the report said, “always believed history would prove him right.”

Some of the classified documents were classified “top secret/sensitive compartmented information,” a category reserved for particularly sensitive material. They included papers that related to Afghanistan, including a 2009 memo he sent to Obama in “a last ditch effort to persuade him not to send additional troops to Afghanistan,” the report said.

The report noted that in a recorded conversation with his ghostwriter in early 2017, shortly after his term as vice president ended, Biden said he had “just found all the classified stuff downstairs.” At the time, Biden was living in a rented home in Virginia.

John Wagner and Jacqueline Alemany contributed to this report.

Father and son arrested in San Diego high school shooting threat

A San Diego high school student and his father were arrested Tuesday after the student allegedly threatened to carry out a shooting on campus.

The San Diego Police Department received several reports that the teenager had allegedly told some Rancho Bernardo High School students on Friday that he planned a shooting at the school on Tuesday, NBC San Diego  reported.

Police filed a gun violence restraining order at the teen’s home, which allows the temporary removal of firearms from people who may be at risk of harming themselves or others.

Detectives who went to the home a few blocks from the school found several unregistered guns, explosives, rocket-propelled grenades, and supplies to make rifle and handgun ghost guns, the station said.

A large number of explosives and several RPGs were found at the home.

The teenager, who was not identified by police because he is underage, was arrested Tuesday and taken to juvenile hall. Police did not say what charges might be filed against him and his father, Neil Anders, 45, who was arrested and booked into San Diego County jail.

Police referred to the father as a “doomsday” survivalist, the station reported.

Authorities swept the campus for explosives early Tuesday but did not find any, and officers remained at the school as a precaution.

No one responded to phone calls made to the family home Tuesday.

Officials with the Poway Unified School District did not respond to a request for comment but wrote in a letter to parents that they would be "working very closely with law enforcement and the city attorney’s office to address the matter appropriately.”

Biden responds to special counsel report on handling of classified documents

By Devan Cole , Tori B. Powell , Elise Hammond and Piper Hudspeth Blackburn, CNN

Key things we learned from the special counsel's report into Biden's handling of classified documents

From CNN's Jeremy Herb, Hannah Rabinowitz, Devan Cole, Zachary Cohen and Holmes Lybrand

President Joe Biden makes his way to board Marine One from the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC, on February 8.

Special counsel Robert Hur’s report released Thursday  did not charge President Joe Biden with a crime, but it painted a picture of a forgetful commander-in-chief who failed to properly protect highly sensitive classified information — a depiction that could hurt Biden politically.

The special counsel report found that Biden willfully retained classified information, including top secret documents, and knew he was in possession of some documents as far back as 2017, and shared some of that information with the ghostwriter of his 2017 memoir.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • A painful report for Biden: Hur laid out in detail how Biden mishandled classified materials, writing that FBI agents discovered materials from “the garage, offices, and basement den in Mr. Biden’s Wilmington, Delaware, home.” The materials included classified documents , including some marked at the highest top secret/sensitive compartmented information level, related to military and foreign policy in Afghanistan, as well as notebooks containing Biden's handwriting. Hur’s report also included photos depicting various parts of Biden’s homes, materials at issue in the investigation and other relevant scenes over the years.
  • Hur says evidence didn't support charging the president: While the investigation revealed that Biden “willfully retained and disclosed classified materials” after leaving office, Hur’s report says his team concluded that the evidence didn’t support prosecuting the president. The primary reason for that determination was that nothing proved a willful intent by Biden to illegally hold onto classified information. The special counsel also raised Biden’s age and memory in explaining why he didn’t bring charges.
  • Biden slams Hur's depiction of him and misspeaks: The president tore into the special counsel's depiction of him as an elderly man who was absent-minded in interviews during hastily scheduled remarks at the White House Thursday night. But just minutes after defending his memory and cognition, Biden misspoke and called President of Egypt Abdel Fattah al-Sisi the “president of Mexico,” a moment that undercut his forceful pushback against the report.
  • Republicans get political gifts: Congressional Republicans wasted no time seizing on Hur’s report, claiming that the decision not to bring criminal charges is evidence of political bias against their party’s likely presidential nominee in 2024, as well as that details about Biden’s memory issues prove he is not fit for office.

Biden blames staff for handling of classified documents

From CNN's Nikki Carvajal

President Joe Biden.

President Joe Biden placed the blame for his handling of classified documents on his staff, saying he took responsibility for “not having seen exactly” what they were doing.

“I take responsibility for not having seen exactly what my staff was doing,” Biden said, when asked by a reporter if he took responsibility for being careless with classified material. “Things that appear in my garage, things that came out of my home, things that were moved -- not by me but my staff."

Biden was asked later what he would do differently and responded that what he should have done is “oversee the transfer of the material that was in my office – in my offices.”

“I should have done that,” he said. “If I go back, I didn't have the responsibility, that was – my staff was supposed to do that and they referenced that in the report. And my staff did not do it in a way that – for example, I didn't know how half the boxes got in my garage until I found out staff gathering them up, put them together and took them out of the garage of my home.”

He also drew a comparison with former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified material, saying his documents weren’t “out in like – in Mar Lago, in a public place where – and none of it was high classified, it didn't have any of that red stuff on it. You know what I mean? The red stuff around the corners? None of that.”

Special counsel Robert Hur found that Biden did not properly protect classified documents in a report released earlier Thursday but said that Biden should not be criminally charged.

Biden spars with reporters pressing him about his age and memory

From CNN's Elise Hammond

President Joe Biden leaves after delivering remarks at the White House on Thursday.

President Joe Biden fired back at reporters lobbing questions at him on Thursday following a special counsel report that did not charge him with a crime, but it painted a picture of a forgetful commander-in-chief who failed to properly protect highly sensitive classified information

The report references apparent lapses in memory from the president. One reporter asked Biden, "How bad is your memory and can you continue as president?"

Biden replied, "My memory is so bad I let you speak."

Another reporter in the room asked the president if he believed his memory had gotten worse. Biden replied:

"None of you thought could I pass any of the things I got passed. How did that happen? I guess I just forgot what was going on," Biden quipped.

Biden fires back against Hur report's description of him as a "well-meaning, elderly man"

From CNN's Betsy Klein

President Joe Biden delivers remarks at the White House.

President Joe Biden fired back against special counsel Robert Hur’s description of why he was not charged, with Hur describing the president as potentially being seen by a jury as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

He dismissed concerns from the American people about his age when pressed by CNN’s MJ Lee on the matter after previously saying they should watch him and make their own judgment.

Age has presented a chronic issue and political liability for Biden: 46% of Democrats in a CNN poll conducted by SSRS released last week were concerned about his age.

“That is your judgment. That is your judgment,” he told Lee, raising his voice, as she asked about the polling.

Pressed again by Lee on why he is best equipped to take on former President Donald Trump in a November general election, he said, “Because I’m the most qualified person in this country to finish the job I started.”

Biden mistakenly refers to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as the president of Mexico

From CNN's Piper Hudspeth Blackburn

President Joe Biden, minutes after defending his memory, mistakenly referred to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as the the president of Mexico while answering questions from reporters about hostage negotiations and humanitarian aid in the Gaza strip.

“Initially, the president of Mexico -- Sisi -- did not want to open up the gate to allow humanitarian material to get in. I talked to him. I convinced him to open the gate. I talked to Bibi to open the gate on Israeli side. I've been pushing really hard, really hard to get humanitarian assistance into Gaza. There are a lot of innocent people who are starving. Lots of innocent people are in trouble and dying. And it's got to stop."

Biden also noted that he’s “pushing very hard now to deal with this hostage ceasefire."

If an initial delay possible, Biden said: ”I think that we would be able to extend that so that we could increase the prospect that this fighting in Gaza changes. There's also other negotiations."

Biden says he is pleased that the special counsel decided not to bring charges

President Joe Biden speaks in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House on Thursday.

President Joe Biden said he’s pleased that special counsel Robert Hur “reached a firm conclusion that no charges should be brought against me in this case.”

"The special counsel acknowledged I cooperated completely. I did not throw up any roadblocks. I sought no delays," the president said of his response to the investigation into his handling of classified documents.

Biden noted that he cooperated with the probe and sat for a five hour interview over two days in October, "even though Israel had just been attacked by Hamas."

Biden slams special counsel for saying he doesn't remember when his son died

From CNN's Elise Hammond and Nikki Carvajal

President Joe Biden speaks on Thursday.

Joe Biden slammed special counsel Robert Hur for putting in his report that the president did not remember when his son Beau died, in a mention of Biden's apparent memory lapses.

The report said investigators found Biden’s “memory was significantly limited” during interviews with his ghostwriter and an interview with Hur’s office last year. According to the report, Biden — during the 2023 interview — did not remember when his son Beau died nor the years he was vice president.

Biden started to say he wore his son's rosary every day since the day he died, but stopped, appearing to choke up.

“Every Memorial Day we hold a service remembering him, attended by friends and family and the people who loved him,” Biden said, after a pause. “I don't need anyone. I don't need anyone to remind me when he passed away.”

He then reiterated that when he sat down with the special counsel, “at the same time I was managing an international crisis.”

Asked later if he felt his memory had gotten worse, Biden responded: “My memory is fine.”

“Take a look at what I've done since I've become president,” Biden said. “None of you thought I could pass any of the things I got passed. How'd that happen?”

More Grammy Awards

Several other awards were given out before the start of the show, including the new category, best pop dance recording, which went to Kylie Minogue for her track "Padam Padam." The Beatles won best music video for "I'm Only Sleeping," the group's first Grammy since 1997.

In another first, Tyla won the Grammy for best African music performance in the first year of the category's existence for her song "Water."

SZA got her second career best pop duo/group performance award for "Ghost in the Machine," along with Phoebe Bridgers, who also won best alternative music album with her band boygenius.

Killer Mike won all three awards he was nominated for: best rap song, best rap performance and best rap album. He was later seen in handcuffs being walked out of the ceremony by several police officers. The LAPD said Monday it was in connection with an altercation that happened nearby, and he was charged with a misdemeanor and released on zero bail.

Folk music legend Joni Mitchell, 80, won her 10th Grammy — best folk album for "Live at Newport" — and performed an emotional rendition of "Both Sides, Now." It was her first performance ever at the Grammys and a rare appearance since her recovery from a 2015 brain aneurysm.

And while the Oscars are still a few weeks away, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" both took home awards Sunday for best compilation soundtrack for visual media and best score soundtrack for visual media, respectively. Song of the year and best song written for visual media also went to Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas for their song "What Was I Made For?" from "Barbie."

You can find the complete list of awards won earlier in the evening  posted here .

David kaufman says billie eilish, noah schnapp should star in 'danny phantom' movie, 'danny phantom' david kaufman tom holland's superheroed out ... schnapp/eilish power couple, exclusive 65 2/11/2024 1:00 am pt.

David Kaufman 's not going ghost on the conversation about who should play Danny Phantom in the live-action movie ... telling TMZ he's got some clear casting ideas.

The actor -- who voiced the titular character in all 53 episodes of the television show and reprised his role in subsequent movies and video games ... told us he's all for Tom Holland playing DP though he thinks Spider-Man might be all done with superheroes for a while.

Here's the deal ... Butch Hartman , creator of a whole bunch of well-known animated shows for Nickelodeon in the 2000s, recently spoke at MegaCon in Orlando and said if there ever was a "Danny Phantom" live-action movie, he'd only want Tom Holland in the role.

For those who don't know, "Danny Phantom" followed a teenager named Danny Fenton who gained ghost-like abilities after a portal to another world exploded and turned him into half-human, half-ghost.

A big if of course ... nothing like this has gone into production or even been announced as far as we can tell -- but it's still something Kaufman really put his mind to, and he decided TH is fine by him if he wants to do it.

DK pointed out Tom's headed to the West End for a production of "Romeo & Juliet" ... a fact David thinks is great for him since it's a departure from the superhero roles Holland has nailed to this point in his career.

Quite frankly, it's not difficult to imagine Tom wanting to pursue different kinds of roles moving forward either since the dude's a talent tour de force.

Kaufman wasn't just countering Butch's idea though ... he also came up with a couple casting calls of his own -- "Stranger Things" actor Noah Schnapp as Danny and Billie freakin' Eilish as his friend-turned-love-interest Sam.

David complimented Noah on his comedic timing, saying he thinks that's a huge part of Danny's character -- so any actor playing him needs to know their way around a joke. And, just look up some pics of the characters ... pretty perfect casting, at least appearance-wise.

Billie doesn't have much acting experience, but that's never stopped Hollywood before ... and she's up for her second Best Original Song Oscar, so maybe she'll be inspired to give acting a try.

Someone from Nickelodeon better start making calls ... they wouldn't want an opportunity like this to come back and haunt them!

Danny Phantom Creator Would Want Tom Holland to Play the Character in Live-Action

There are other actors not pushing their 30s, y'know..

Isaiah Colbert Avatar

Butch Hartman, the creator of the hit Nickelodeon show Danny Phantom, revealed that, if there ever is a live-action Danny Phantom movie, he wants Spider-Man actor Tom Holland to play the teenage ghost.

During a panel at MegaCon (via ComicBook ), a fan asked Hartman who he'd like to portray Danny Fenton.

"Tom Holland, all the way," Hartman said. "It's got to be Tom Holland."

Danny Phantom originally aired on Nickelodeon back in 2007. The show follows a 14-year-old boy named Danny Fenton who, after having his molecules rearranged by his parent's ghost portal, is gifted an array of supernatural powers. Danny's powers allowed him to phase through walls, disappear, and fly among other things. Throughout the show's three-year run, Danny and his friends would solve a myriad of misadventures capturing ghosts and sending them back into the Ghost Dimension.

You know, I can see it here.

The panel comes months before Danny Phantom's 20th anniversary in April. Although it has been years since the Nickelodeon show's final episode aired, fans have been long clamoring for the sci-fi cartoon to make a return, whether it be in the form of an animated continuation or in live-action. Fortunately, Danny Phantom has made a comeback of sorts with his recent appearance as a playable character in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 .

It should be noted, that as of the time of publication, Holland is a crisp 27 years old. Meaning, that by the time any Hollywood gears would hypothetically start to turn toward making Hartman's dream casting a reality, the Marvel actor would be comfortably in his 30s by then. Safe to say, "I'm going ghost, fellow kids" wouldn't be as catchy a phrase as one might hope.
