In 2021, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club (RFBYC) experienced a rise in female participation from younger age groups; a shift from the influx of “Over 30s” in the previous year. This rise is reflective of the quality of the Club’s programmes aimed at female sailing introduction, tuition and participation at all levels. The Dinghy and Training Centre and its Sailing Pathways Program played a significant role in making sailing more accessible and credit must go to the Club’s coaches, trainers and instructors for their hard work.

Male membership numbers rose substantially in the Under 16, 21–24, 31 to 36+ and Associate groups. A moderate reduction was experienced in the 16–17 and 18–20 groups. Numbers were static in the 25–27, 28–30, Country, Reciprocal and Special groups.

Female membership numbers rose substantially in the Under 16, 21–24, 36+, and Associate groups. Growth was static in the 25–27, 28–30, 31–35, Country, Reciprocal and Special groups.

The Club held eight New Member Nights in 2020-21 including a Youth “Transition to Ordinary Membership” night, celebrated in the Members’ Bar where 23 youth members celebrated their shift into adult membership.

The Club’s membership numbers over the last five years by Category can be compared in this table:

The Club has worked diligently on strategic planning for Membership and recognised the importance of increasing member numbers. The strategic planning included a review of membership of the 15 membership categories and found that they remained relevant.

Focus in 2022 and beyond will be on developing other forms of membership that may fill perceived gaps and create new opportunities.

Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club

While Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club may be the home to high performance Offshore and Fleet racing sportspeople, we also partner with local community & schools. At Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club our focus is not just winning; we hope to inspire individuals to be active and participate in the sport. The primary objective of our Club is to provide encouragement of amateur to professional level yachting and boating activities including hosting and organising local, national and international yachting and powerboat events.

In 1896, the distinguished colonist Edward Keane, along with Aubrey Sherwood, Collector of Customs and some of their local friends agreed to form a sailing club and build a jetty for their boats at the foot of Irvine Street in Freshwater Bay. Some 116 years later, after two world wars, endless regattas, world, state and local club championships, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club continues to thrive, prosper, and bring together Club Members and their families at this same picturesque location on the banks of the Swan River.

Business Description

Here at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, we are proud of our yachting heritage and the success of our sailors at Club, State, National and International level. We are equally as proud of the hundreds of young sailors who pass through our training programmes each year and of the sailors who take part in a regatta for the first time.

We’re also proud of our work with school and the community, making sailing and boating experiences available to those who would otherwise find the participation hurdle just too high.

Members of this Club come from all walks of life, united by a passion for being afloat and enjoying friendships that, in many cases, endure for a lifetime. So whether you have ambitions to be a Club sailor or a world beater, you won’t find a better club than Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club to call home.

Event information

The Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club winter time trialling season will commence with Power Opening Day on Saturday, 6 May 2023, concluding on Saturday, 16 September 2023. The season is open to Members of all Clubs, power and sail.

Opening Day Schedule:

A nominated boat can compete in as many events during the season as they would like. Additional events such as State Teams Events and other WA yacht club invitational events will require seperate nominations and information for these will be sent as required.

Time trialling provides a wonderful opportunity to use your boat big or small on the river over the winter months.

Time trialling is a test of accuracy rather than speed, and requires that you arrive at checkpoints located a known distance apart at precisely the right time, based on your nominated speed of between 5 and 15 knots.

A one point penalty is applied for every second that a boat is early or late at each checkpoint, so that the boat with the lowest number of points lost wins the event. Prizes are also awarded for results on handicap weekly and there are a number of perpetual trophies presented on Closing Day.

It sounds simple but getting the perfect 'zero' score is deceptively difficult and you will find yourself developing your knowledge of the river and perfecting your boat handling skills to achieve it.

Events usually start at 2pm on Saturday and after completing the event, participants proceed to the Member's Bar for some well earned socialising, a bite to eat and announcement of results.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

royal freshwater bay yacht club

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
